I think the Q400 is too much plane for that market or does BE have something smaller?

Think they will use the Dornier 328 as they have an aircraft flying Dundee to Stansted at present or they have the SAAB 340/2000 available.

Current schedule FlyBe at Dundee:

- dep. DND 07:00 - arr. STN 08:30 1h30 BE6621 D328 Direct
- dep. STN 09:10 - arr. DND 10:45 1h35 BE6622 D328 Direct

- dep. DND 16:45 - arr. STN 18:25 1h40 BE6625 D328 Direct
- dep. STN 19:00 - arr. DND 20:35 1h35 BE6626 D328 Direct

There is plenty of space in this schedule to add another sector to AMS:

- dep. DND 11.30 - arr. AMS 14.15 1h45 BE D328 Direct
- dep. AMS 14.45 - arr. DND 15.30 1h45 BE D328 Direct

As a side note, DND should rebrand as Dundee/St. Andrew's. It might help a little.

Just a way to keep the Dornier 328 busy between Stansted flights.

I live in Dundee and this news is being met with enthusiasm but also the usual skepticism. The travelling public are generally put off of using DND as the prices, despite subsidies, are usually prohibitively expensive. It is much cheaper to drive to the Ferrytoll P&R, take the shuttle bus to EDI, and fly BA, Virgin, FlyBe, Easyjet, or Ryanair to one of the London airports. More flights, better choice, better connectivity, cheaper price, and not too much of an inconvenience. The same will be the case for this AMS flight. It will be uncompetitive for the general public when compared to EasyJet and KLM flights from EDI. As much as I would like to see more flights to my home airport, I just cannot see this one becoming a viable route. We had flights to Malaga, via Bournemouth, years ago and they never returned. The fact that the flight had to stop in Bournemouth to refuel as the runway at DND was not long enough put people off.

I think DND should become a general aviation facility only and that the various local authorities in the area should make good use of the now closed RAF Leuchars. It has a long runway that was recently resurfaced, good rail links, potential for development, and is close to both Dundee, Perth, and St. Andrews. This may be a more effective way to secure air routes in the Tayside area.

The reality however is that DND is just too close to EDI and ABZ to become any sort of player in the East of Scotland aviation market.

FlyBe will be aware of this and it may be more competitive for the airline to replace the D328 with a Dash8-400 on both the DND-STN and DND-AMS routes. The operating cost would not be significantly higher, while the number of seats would rise substantially from 32 to 78 seats permitting more competitive fares.

In addition FlyBe might codeshare with EY and KL, as they already do on many AMS-UK flights.

As much as I would like to see that happen, and the routes to succeed, I think that may be overkill for this route. I realise more seats may mean a cheaper price but if they cant fill them then there is no profit and the route is likely to meet the axe.

I remember when CityJet was running the DND-LCY route and up-gauged the D328 to the F50. It was not long before the D328 was back on the route. Then again this could be due to the speed of the F50. I am just not sure that Tayside can provide the capacity required to make DND function efficiently.

As a frequent visitor to the area I would love to see something succeed at DND or the UK governing forces have the foresight to allow some traffic at Leuchars. Joint use facilities are quite commonplace here in the USA and in other parts of the world so I'm sure it's workable. Leuchars would certainly be able to support some sort of service to London or another hub solely based on its proximity to St. Andrews. Arriving at EDI, hiring a car and making the sluff across the bridge for a 1 hour plus drive to the Tayside area is not at all appealing.

DND-STN does nothing for connectivity to anywhere. It's still at 40 min plus train ride into London and you'd spend more to fly to STN than you would on a connecting LCC flight to someplace else. Flights to the City airport were better than STN but certainly AMS, DUB or LGW would be better choices for actually making the service useful to the most people. I mean the choice for arriving at the home of golf by air requires a 1+ hour ride from EDI or a change of airports in London. It all could be easier so I hope this service is augmented with some type of code sharing and a schedule that supports connections to other parts of the world from AMS.

Afraid not. It is just a civilian field. RAF Turnhouse close in the late 1990s and a lot of the buildings have since been demolished.

Quoting mi5flyer (Reply 9):

I agree. The STN link just does not cut the mustard. For DND to be near profitable it needs a link to a major hub like AMS, LHR (pigs will fly), CDG, etc, but I still think its proximity to EDI and ABZ makes this impossible. Both EDI and ABZ are only an hour to two hours away, both have links to LON, CDG, AMS, FRA, etc.

The best hope is the joint use of RAF Leuchars as the facilities are already there, but I fear this will never happen due to the slow moving nature of government in this country.
