Look at TK's timing of ESB FRA, Leaving ESB at 19:00 and making it impossible to connect to anywhere.

TK's strategy for ESB is to make new entry impossible by others, keep pushing for more pax on ESB IST and only TK to fly the sector.
Also TK pays attention to timing of flights from Ankara making sure that they do not create competition via connecting to other Star Alliance carriers for other destinations. FRA is a good example to that even if an evening departure is also good for businessman to leave Ankara after their Works done.

Ankara is the second largest revenue maker for TK globally so no wonder they keep this to themselves.....the lack of interest form international carrieers help TK to abuse their position further but sooner or later this will change

I am not sure if I get this right?
If someone wanted to steal customers from TK, in this case LH, wouldn't they do it easily by introducing a morning ESB-FRA flight (hence all kinds of connections)? What is stopping LH?

Absolutely nothing.

LH, AF, BA or any airline can operate as they wish to ESB.

The lack of service is more a reflection of lack of confidence in the ability to make viable €$£₺ return on such services.

in fact LH tried many times and even in recent years with a morning departure ex ESB to connect to the world.
as we don't see this flight around anymore this probably tells the true, but sad story about Ankara.

Gentelmen, please take it easy.

AF, BA : Nobody wants to use their arrogant yet low quality services. Look (as mentioned before), they even have difficulty to sustain their services at IST.

LH : has one morning and one afternoon departure everyday to MUC (mostly A321) which mostly connects TATL and overseas passengers. I also use their morning departure a few times every year. LH makes nice money out of ESB (which is clearly reflected to figures provided by LAXintl). These are busy flights and quite popular also (seasonally LH also flies to FRA, but not popular due to very bad timing).

But the real question is this:

Nobody is stopping LH but someone is stopping EK (!). I assure you, things will change if ever EK is permitted to ESB.

It is not that simple. TK has a strict defence line against EK and FZ. TK does not bother at all to G9 and probably would not mind if G9 flies any where in Turkey. But EK/FZ is a different story. FZ is allowed to fly to SAW just because Pegasus is allowed to fly to DXB, and with the same frequency to my knowledge.

And if FZ flies to ESB, that is also fine! It is supposed to be an LLC but with paid AVOD and quality service, it is beyond Anadolujet or Pegasus.

Neither of these European carriers can compete with TK for many years now also in Turkish market. So it is not surprising to see why they refrain from ESB or ADB. They can hardly make IST run so we need to see real TK push at ESB before anyone else.

Yes these European carriers will eventually come back to ESB and ADB but don't forget the LH consolidation of SR (now LX), SN (Now Bruseels), OS, and former BD. All of these operators were swept from ESB by LH to strengthen MUC route that is now doing over 85% transit pax. In fact OS suspended IST against Pegasus and TK competition.

I will not blame you or some of our dear members on this site for their negative perspective about ESB. I fly to and from ESB and have quite an idea about the pax profile/potential, overall evolution of the market I am sure long before may be you were born. Have been fortunate to fly with AF Concorde on a CDG ESB flight also in 1987 I guess it was. Of course ESB is a secondary market to IST and this is natural but has its own potential to grow further and is in fact a better transit point for many willing to travel to other destinations in Turkey.

Anyhow I know this site is mainly an IST site so I will leave the topic here.

Thanks for all your comments though...

Dont feel there is a bias against Ankara as there is not, atleast not from me.

I know Ankara well going all the way back to the 1970s and actually lived in Ankara for 3-years as well. I remember folks like SN, OS, SR, PA serving the city. In more recent years I was an invited guest at the new terminal opening (sat next to the Air France Turkey manager coincidentally), so I do know Ankara and understand what it is and what it is not.

However reality is when you have a nation like Turkey that evolved to be dominated by a single city, its not surprising secondary markets like Ankara will be far down on the list of airline priorities.
Turkey is very much like France, where if you exclude a tourist market like Antalya, single city such as Istanbul drives 50% of the nations entire commercial traffic.

One could even argue Ankara actually has far more service than it should based on its own needs. If not for TK having made ESB its Anatolian hub with services to Eastern Turkey which provide much feed, Ankara's own organic capacity needs are even less. Add in market seasonality, lack of much of a tourism draw and lower yielding traffic you are left with a capital city that unfortunately does not paint a very rosy picture for airline network planners sadly.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but these threads are about "Turkish Aviation". That happens to be mainly focused in Istanbul and TK. We are talking about TK, because it is exciting to follow a company growing this way. We are talking about Istanbul because it is a major hub, all major carriers are flying there, there is a new airport in the making, with IST and SAW we have two constantly growing airports... in short, lots to talk about.
We can always talk about ESB but frankly the conversation might be limited. To be fair, there are about 40 or so other airports/regions/cities in Turkey never get mentioned in these threads (like AYT). That is the nature of dialogue. We talk about what is happening in the news, exciting new routes, new airplane arrivals.
But it is always nice to hear what is happening in ESB, and other airports periodically from locals like yourself since some of us are very very far away. ( like this Concorde story.... it is awesome. Maybe we can find a picture ot the Concorde taken at ESB )

I know what you mean and I absolutely agree that TK is like France in that it is single-city-centric, but still compare destinations from ESB with the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marseille_Provence_Airport

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyon%E2%80%93Saint-Exup%C3%A9ry_Airport

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toulouse%E2%80%93Blagnac_Airport

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nantes_Atlantique_Airport

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EuroAir...%E2%80%93Mulhouse%E2%80%93Freiburg

I think there is some truth to the claim that TK prices out the competition, otherwise how could it be that no airline other than LH flies to ESB even a few times a week? Let's face it, TK actually priced out several airlines from IST even. KL, BA, AF, IB have token flights to IST. Only LH managed to stay, at the expense of LX and OS of course.

Its not easy to compare French provincial airport services compared to Turkey.
France is in heart of Europe with many nations only 1 hour away. Most of EU can be reached in 2 hours.
But outside Europe services most provincial French airports don't have much service except maybe to North Africa and that is because of colonial links.

Turkey and Ankara specifically is much farther from EU airports. Better analogy would be to look at the heavy domestic service of flights within 1hr radius at ESB to be equivalent which Ankara has plenty of.

So much for ESB for now. I'm sure we will speak about it in near future as demand and complains are growing from local businesses. Perhaps we need to wait for a new government with a new strategy which is not historically Istanbul centric. But of course this is more into politics and beyond what A.net is for.

If there is money to be made airlines will surely come. This is a basic and well tried rule in the industry.

I know ME at one time served Ankara, obviously it did not do well enough to be kept

The entire Ankara market is only about 4.5mil PEW annually - there are regional cities, or secondary airports in America that generate that much traffic.
On a global scale Ankara is a rather small market.

p.s. - what will HSR do for air demand to/from Ankara long term?

2015-04-15 Istanbul (IST) Dubai (DXB) TK760 16:55 17:20 21:30 Estimated 21:02
2015-04-15 Ankara (ESB) Istanbul (IST) TK2109 07:00 07:18 08:10 Landed 08:12
2015-04-15 Istanbul (IST) Ankara (ESB) TK2108 05:00 05:45 06:05 Landed 06:23

-Is there really a big demand for this 5am flight from IST-ESB which sees 333, 343 regularly?
-or is it because TK wants to bring everyone from ESB to IST for connections in the early morning.

-and why have this bird sit on tarmac at IST for 9 hours before flying to DXB?

How about MIA? MIA is a larger O&D market to Turkey than SEA, DFW and ATL combined. Heck its even larger than IAH and SFO. I think there has to be hidden reason why TK is avoiding MIA like the plague, and I have the feeling that the MIA airport owes TK money that it has not paid yet back when TK flew here in 2000-01. I suspect a similar situation with the TLV and AA/TWA fiasco. Of course MIA officials will never tell us that because it might be a major source of embarrassment for them. It can't be because of a lack of market, because the O&D numbers clearly disprove that. Then again MIA has never been big on the ME3 expansion plans. QR just got here and it is only flying a measly 5x weekly, though it will go daily in November.

I am also wondering whether TK may sometime launch ESB-NYC and ESB-IAD, using a smaller frame such as the 788 or the 338...

Oh my.. I am not sure if I am seeing this here but it looks like AirportHaber crowd is making its way over here.

I never believe airkule.com. But I have heard exact same info from an insider too. Hope they are not wrong, unlike their constant 380 stories.

Multiple people believe them, though.

Turkish350XWB and Karel seem to believe it and they are really good when it comes to these kind of things.

Latest TK 77Ws that arrived on March 30th, started pax service two days after arrival.
I thought most planes go through customs/paperwork that takes longer than two days.
Any info on this?
Quoting KarelXWB (Reply 54):
It might take several days for a new aircraft type, it can be done faster for existing types because post delivery procedures can be optimized.

I guess two days is more like it
The latest TK 77W, TC-JJZ, arrived 5 days ago and already been to LHR, ATH, and twice to HKG.

About the news of TK to MIA and ATL, I think the source is Ugur CEBECI the writer. He is pretty much a TK insider and he was on the inaugural IST-SFO flight, chatting with the new TK Chairman of the Board.
On the other hand; he wrote a similar story; TK planning to fly to MIA, ATL, DTW, MEX.. back in this 2010 article:
http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/yazarlar/16292186.asp
So, who knows???
Timing seems right with the arrival of the new 2 x 77W aircraft (both MIA and ATL might be 77W routes, probably 4 x Weekly to start with), but I'll believe it when I see it when announced on the Turkish stock exchange.
