LAN Finally Retiring 340s This Apr17th?

HI there

Booking for some SYD flights on LAN's website, I see they change the aircraft type on that date. Apr 16th shows 340; Apr17th and on, the 788.

Is April 17th SYD-SCL the last revenue LAN 340 flight? Are we really finally see them gone?

Great times onboard them, specially inside that wonderful Lan Chile 90's livery...

The borough the 340 retirement forward and are using the 788 temporary, then at the end of the year the flight will go 10x weekly with 789s.

It's about time they have been breaking down in AKL way to much, looks like ANZES is losing an loyal customer in AKL.

Yes, the last revenue flight LA800 is scheduled for April 17th (SYD/AKL departure). Out with the old and in with the new:

Sad to see the quad lady go. It was one of the most stunning liveries on an A340.

Big difference though, LAN's were older A340-300 while Thai's are the newer A340-500/600. Virgin has both -300 and 600 which both are being retired when leases end.

It has probably visited MIA a few times over the last 15 years. The A340 did operate one flight on both the SCL-JFK and SCL-IPC-PPT routes this year.

I rememeber back in 1999 to hear some LAN people proud of chosing the A340 as the replacement for the aging 767 fleet, at the time 320s were chosen to replace 723s for both Lan Chile and Ladeco... those days...

Those were the days when they plance an order for 7 343s, with option for another 14.
At last, LAN only took delivery of 4 brand new 340s (CC-CQA/C/E/F) and got an ex Air Canada as their last (CC-CQG).

Those were the days when we first met PTVs, foot resters in economy, snacks in the rear all night long...

And check here the TV commercial Lan Chile first announced the A340, as well at the first Airbus/Lan Chile 340 display in Santiago at Fidae 2000, presented as "Lan Chile Airbus, the winning team":

I am glad then that I got a chance to get a few photos of one of their A340s at SYD a few weeks ago. Now I have something to look forward to when going out there after the 17th.

It would be great if SYD spotters tried to get some shots of LAN's first 787 flight arriving into SYD on the 18th. I am trying to move my upcoming reservation on LA801 to get on that flight; however it looks like it is completely sold out! After all, it will be a very historic flight!

I might try to get out there, but I do not produce any shots that are anywhere near the quality of being accepted in the database here.

Maybe I misread your comment, but there is a wide choice of both carriers and equipment between SYD-AKL. NZ alone operates the B763, A320, B772 and the B789.

incidentally....how does the crew work SCL-AKL-SYD.

Does one crew do SCL-AKL then another do AKL-SYD-AKL, then another do AKL-SCL or is is one crew SCL-SYD?

The former. Doing SCL-SYD with one stop would mean going illegal for the crew.

Now I don't know for sure how long is the layover between flights at AKL but I seem to recall it was 24-28hs between flights.

Effective September 21, LAN will upgauge to the 787-9 on the SCL-AKL-SYD route. Currently LAN only has two 787-9s in the fleet. By September 21st, LAN will have six 787-9s in the fleet and will end the year with seven 787-9s.
