AF A380 To MIA: Was AF Happy?

Tue Apr 14, 2015 5:54 am

AF used the A380 for its MIA route for W14/15.
Were they happy?
Is there a chance that they use the A380 year round on this route?

There is a chance. I've talked to some people at MIA and someone at AF. They could send the A380 year-round. But they would need more A380s.

AF already confirmed to MIA that the A380 will be coming back for the Winter season. This time, from October 25.

Great!

The 77W is not large enough for the MIA route IMHO

Air France needs to make arrangements with MIA to have their own A380 gate. Miami-Dade also needs to get and announce their A380 expansion program because next fall BA brings the whale jet to MIA. Miami will have all three European operators of the A380 flying it to Miami.

AF at one time had two daily flights to Miami, if they have to use the LH hate for an A380 they should go back to 2 777 or A340 and use a gate on the Delta concourse as they used to do when they flew a 747.

I remember reading that runway 9/27 is the main A380 runway at MIA and if the A380 has to go from the south terminal to the 8L/26R&8R/26L it closes down 12/30 while it is taxing to the runways. When BA brings it to MIA will the A380 be allowed to use the northern runways as they are closer to the planned A380 in the North Terminal (D1-D2)?

Air France is getting it's own A380 gate at Concourse H and it will hopefully be ready for next year.

You're saying that LH has invested in airport infrastructure with MIA, for an A380 gate? Wow! And MIA currently only has one A380 capable gate? Again wow! What kind of last millennium operation is this?! So would AF have to invest in MIA's infrastructure to achieve its own A380 gate?! Sheesh!

Um, so were LH running consistently late at the gate causing AF delays? Or were the AF flights just scheduled wrong with the knowledge that the only gate would not be clear for them?

Sounds like a good course of action. I thought MIA was one of the United States' premiere airports and a fundamental international gateway, it's incredibly surprising that this is the case. At this end of the world, AKL or Auckland International Airport, is now handling three EK A380's at one time each day - and over the summer season there's a fourth (an SQ one but not at the same time).

What's the reason for the seeming complacency on MIA for such a slow reaction to infrastructure development in this modern age? Did they not think they'd get a return on investment? (Apologies, probably the subject for another thread.)

No, nothing of that sort. MIA paid for the gate. Lufthansa agreed to pay penalties if it failed to use the gates, because the gate was built to accommodate Lufthansa.

MIA will have three A380 gates within a year. There is no slow reaction to infrastructure - MIA build the A380 gates as they are requested, and does so quite quickly. Air France's decision to operate the A380 was very last minute, and a gate would not be ready on time.

Grand, thank you. Apologies to any and all MIA fans if I appeared a bit harsh... and a bit ill informed.

MIA currently has 2 A380-capable gates: F17 (1 bridge) and J17 (3 bridges). As Mark mentioned, an existing gate in Concourse H is being retrofitted to accommodate the A380. Work is also underway on combining E6 and E8 into a single gate with 2 bridges when used by the A380, and D1 and D2 with 3 bridges.

By the end of 2015, all concourses except G (which cannot even accept international arrivals) will be A380-capable.

MIA has 2 A380-capable gates, not 1, and this was until recently 100% more than they needed. It's not a "last millennium" operation to not waste money on building/retrofitting gates unnecessarily. The aviation department acted smartly by not adding A380 gates until they actually had A380 operators to use them.

Yes, Lufthansa had used 8R/26L before.

4, actually. British Airways will use E6/8 before they D1/2.

Its Miami Dade which invests in airport infrastructure, where do you get the idea its LH and AF making the investment ?

What makes you conclude the airlines are making the investment ? I would love to know how you arrived at that one ?

As for the operation of the A380 at MIA, it worked really quite well actually. Quite a boost from 0P/42J to 9P/80J, but the loads were higher than expected, even in P!
It will be back next winter and might even become a yearly round operation.

IF First Class and J demand are so good they can send two flights with 77W having P and expanded J class. The four class 77W has 8F and 67J so expanded premium class demand can be satisfied by First Class 77W's.

That'd be a great move!

AF is currently putting new seats and new cabins layouts on its 777 fleet. The 773 equipped with new cabins will be 4P/58J.
I think this version should perfectly fit the Miami route.

15 years ago for a very short time. Ended around 9/11 and only lasted one summer.

Though back then AF had three daily flights - it still has two, with a daily A320 to the Caribbean.

Gate H10 should be modified for the AF 380. Currently AZ and AR use that one. The former uses a 777/330 and the latter 330/340.

I think the A380 (year-round) would make the most sense.

I heard AF will consider year-round when they get the remaining 2 A380s on order and if MIA builds an A380 gate for them, which looks like it's going to happen.

going from P9/J80/Y+38/Y389 to P8/J116/Y+76/Y400 does seem to be a bit of a jump and sending only one would fall well short of the Y demand.

Best regards

Would that be possible without affecting neighbouring gates? Or are those already blocked off when a heavy parks on H10 (As the angled towline across H12 shown on Google Earth would suggest)?
