Rumor: AA To Hire 1200+ F/A's Fall '15

Wed Apr 15, 2015 11:35 am

I understand that the line flying F/A instructors are being offered the chance to instruct new hire AA classes this fall. 1200+ LAA newbs. Any truth?

I flew on a LUS flight Monday (rare for me) DFW-CLT and there were some young looking FA's. Has LUS been hiring a lot more in recent years

Out of curiosity, how much can a beginner flight attendant with AA or DL expect to make per year starting out?

Thanks Gen2stew,

Think I'll keep my current job. A WN stewardess once told me she made upwards of $80K+ per year picking up some extra shifts. I don't know if she was pulling my finger or not and not sure how long she was with the company.

It won't help AA because within a year or two they'll all be embittered like the rest of them. Maybe its just the international ones I haven't flown domestic in awhile.

Fortunately for WN FAs, they enjoy an industry leading contract with work rules that provide additional pay in situations where FAs at other airlines would not be compensated anything additional. This is in addition to their FAs having the highest paying trips and daily flight credit guarantee (flight credit wise) and also the highest base hourly wages. Also, they provide the highest scheduling flexibility- there are no minimum or maximum hourly requirements per month, quarter, or annum. Topped out FAs can easily earn over 6 figures per annum and without having to work more than 3-4 days a week. This of course is largely thanks to the financially stable company they work for.

Delta hired ~1,500 in 2014 and will hire as many, if not more, in 2015. I met some of our new F/As as they left class a few weeks ago. Lots of cute 22-25 year olds.

The international ones are pretty widely acknowledged to be the worst of the bunch. Many of the domestic crews can be quite good, especially in F where many of them seem to have doubled down on friendliness to make up for recent cuts in food and beverage service.

I wonder how long you would stay chipper after working reserve, far away from home, and making 25,000 a year. I wouldn't be smiling for long either.

Wow, I know an FA who, if working high time-could make 100K+ a year. That's a surprising difference from new hire to pretty senior.

I have noticed some very young and chipper FAs on AA lately!

Certainly the FAs on int'l flights have seniority, make respectable money and work the plumb routes... Plus, no one is forcing them to stay if they don't like the job.

Haven't ever had a bad F/A on AA, in Y, J or F. I've got 1+ million miles logged on AA over the past 10 years.

MIA-LAX-MIA F/As on the 777 are consistently top notch.

I'm at 1.8 million, and you'd be hard pressed to find a bigger AA fan than me. I love the new branding, love the product (mostly), and fly them pretty much exclusively. But the longhaul crews are horrific more often than they are good. Most of them seem to radiate unwelcomeness. Every aspect of the service is done for their convenience - you'll eat when they're ready to feed you, get your tray cleared when they decide it's time, and God help you if you ask for anything extra or interfere with their crew rest time. If they forget to offer newspapers or decide they don't want to be bothered greeting F/J pax by name, well, that's just too damn bad.

I'm on board an A319 flying ATL-LAX as I write this, seated in F, in the crew are fantastic - friendly, congenial and laughing and joking with passengers. It's almost as if they undergo some kind of brainwashing when they go through international training.

The topped out FAs earning 6 figures a year at WN don't work high time. They're working 3-4 days a week max. Though not always guaranteed, generally happy employees make for happy customers- even if they've been flying for 30 or 40 years (the senior group at WN are very old school and true customer service pros). With regards to those who say employees become bitter after only a couple of years, this is not always true. All junior FAs have to pay their dues.

I think the reserve system in which the US is a key reason for such poor service. Down in Australia most airlines don't do this (I think the EU carriers and ME3 are the same) you get a roster straight away, reserve is done one month a year, by everyone! You can choose your rostered trips according to seniority, but even if your seniority is too low to get what you want- at least you can plan your life, far better socially, for family, and health. And for those senior enough many will take their annual leave during their reserve roster greatly reducing the time spent on reserve.

The system in the US potentially a decade later of reserve is shocking! Id be grumpy too. Can't believe so many stick at it for so long.

Except most crews don't sit on reserves that long though...

Good on them, for having that "Industry leading contract". But the fact that WN can't take you to Paris, or Sydney, doesn't really entice people. It's not a long haul international airline. If i wanted to become a FA, I'd want to see the world, not serve peanuts across all the square states, on one simple boring 737. I'd need variety. It's just too, well, basic.

US jr crews (PHL and CLT bases) have been getting lines in record times. Back in the day you could be reserve for 10+ years.

I don't know if it's still the case or not, but a couple of US carriers had rotating reserve so that you weren't stuck on reserve for months on end.
