Rumor: New Airline In BHM To Be Announced 4/16

Wed Apr 15, 2015 10:33 pm

There was some official announcement a few weeks ago of a new airline coming to BHM.
I didn't see anything on the forums about this, so I figured it was worth some mention.

I can't find the link now to where it first was reported but all I am hearing is about the announcement by the airport
tomorrow.

I have my money on Spirit maybe to FLL or Allegiant to LAS or PIE. I doubt it is going to be B6.

According to the BHM official Facebook page, there is an "exciting announcement" tomorrow.

I'm happy to hear that. BHM has taken a beating over the last few years from WN. I know any new service would be appreciated.
Spread hope like fire.

I doubt it's NK. They have been going after major markets only as of late. G4 would fit the mold.

Well there are quite a few folks that drive from Mississippi to fly out of BHM, so NK could try to feed off from that
catchment area.

BA 787 to LHR?

Seriously, would Aeromexico be a possibility? or even Copa?

A new airline is also announcing service to 2 new cities in New Orleans at 10 AM.. Maybe it is a Seaport or Silver Airways announcement.

LOL, not a snowball's chance in hell.

IMHO, there's really only 2 options. Silver operating to one of the panhandle cities (ECP/PNS/VPS), hugely popular with Southern tourists. Or, Allegiant opening up semi-weekly flights. Neither of which sound too exciting.

VX- NO WAY
AS- NO WAY
B6- NO WAY
NK- Maybe, but bigger fish to fry
F9- Who knows where the next dart will land on their dartboard of destinations?

I am not sold on F9 coming to BHM. They seem to run away from WN wherever they have
to compete. WN has a lot of market share in BHM. With places like MCO/LAS/TPA covered
for leisure non stop markets. But anything can happen as it is an F9 dartboard these days.

NK would be interesting. A non stop to FLL would do really well here, especially with their
ability to connect to international flights from FLL. Also have to factor in the cruises as well.
But that is only one destination. If NK came, there would likely be at least 2 or 3
destinations announced.

The announcement will be at 10am Central Time. They have a booth all set up and everything at the airport.
Maybe I could snag a muffin when no one is looking. lol

It's Silver Airways. They will be flying to MSY and JAX according to the route map on the webpage.

I had a feeling it would be Silver Airways. Trying to expand their presence in the southeast. Most of the gates
in BHM are occupied already. Maybe they will use C6? Since UA rarely uses it on the end there.

MSY makes sense, JAX not so much.

I think the JAX is more for connections to the rest of Florida.
I think someplace like TPA would have made more sense for connections.

Makes me wonder why not MEM and MSY for Silver as Delta has abandoned it.

Southern Airways Express will only operate out of a terminal they can avoid the TSA hassel. The only exception to this is the recently added EAS routes like Memphis/ Greenville MS where they moved those to the main terminal at MEM.

Yet another instance of 3M adding routes recently abandoned by WN. Perhaps 3M could try BHM-BNA or even BHM-SDF too.

MEM-MSY seems like an excellent opportunity for 3M. Maybe JAN-MCO as well. I still think they could pull off service to niche markets in Florida like APF, MTH and for all intents and purposes SGJ, as well as bigger markets like DAB and MIA.
Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

Maybe read the CLE thread - especially post #189 by Lakeeffect

What's Going On In CLE - Part 9 (by American 767 Jan 26 2015 in Civil Aviation)

"Digging a little deeper into the January 2015 year over year numbers (domestic only):

Southwest pax in CLE grew by 11.9% from 60,634 to 67,855.

Frontier pax grew by 1,179% from 5,656 to 72,315 in January 2015."

I don't see Frontier "running away" from Southwest at CLE.

BHM-BNA didn't work because the drive was too easy and there was less need to get folks to DAL through BHM. I don't see the opening for 3M there.

Ahhhhh yes, the might mariner...mention F9 in any thread and you are there. lol

F9 isn't running from WN in CLE, you are correct. I do read the CLE threads but
rarely comment on them. I really don't think WN cares all that much about the
CLE market, otherwise they would have built it up like others did. WN is chasing
higher yielding business travelers, not as much leisure markets like F9 is going
for.

But back on topic: 3M could expand in BHM. Not sure if an ECP flight may
tempt them. They can make it like a bus service with 6 stops along the way
all the way to EYW

B-Ham is too easy a drive to Nashville, Memphis and B-Ham is less than 3 now.

Someone else mentioned Southern Airways Express, I think they want to start Memphis to St. Louis soon. Maybe Branson. They say they are expanding their SEC gameday flight Options

I am wondering why 3M picked BHM of all places? I guess because of their fleet are small planes with
limited range, makes sense why they hop and skip along. I think by looking at the route map that the
same plane would go JAX-BHM-MSY and back MSY-BHM-JAX and so on.

That service is provided by SeaPort Airlines.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?
