13L is closed.

Single runway 13R now in use.

Due to RWY-TAXI / CONSTRUCTION, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 5 hours and 7 minutes. To see if you may be affected, select your departure airport and check "Delays by Destination".

Strong crosswinds, one runway shutdown, and low visibility is going to create a mess. Delays are already over 5 hours which is almost unheard of at 9am. Things will only get worse.

as of 9:26am, the conditions are REALLY bad :

Due to WEATHER / WIND, departure traffic destined to La Guardia Airport, New York, NY (LGA) is currently experiencing delays averaging 4 hours and 16 minutes.

For mysterious reasons, EWR is still showing "green" light on fly.faa.gov even though JFK and LGA are being pummeled.

I would not consider it mysterious. UA issued a travel waiver and delayed some planes on its own to keep EWR under control for now.

Looking at Flightradar24.com no traffic lined up to land on JFK at all.
Appears an AF and CA flight are diverting to EWR and a SQ A380 is doing laps over Riverhead to make its mind up.
And there is a whole lot of TALT flights just about to come over the hill for lunch time.

Looks like they would be below the VOR 13R approach with those conditions

RNP 13R could get you a bit lower

But with those winds and that sharp right turn on final for both approaches no arrivals for now.

They need the ILS 13L. But that runway is OTS

When was the last time JFK was effectively closed to all arrivals like this

So far Jetblue diverted 2 planes to BDL. AA diverted one to EWR. There are probably more diversions out there.

Looks like a TK 333 landed in JFK only to depart 20 minutes later for PHL. Unless flightware is a little off.

How does ATC decide which plane is delayed? While Swiss and Air France and doing loops off Long Island, American and Lufthansa come in and are (apparently) immediately vectored for landing. Do they query planes individually for fuel or is there another reason that escapes me why earlier arrival wait while later flights from the same origin are being allowed to land?

I see that. And Air France is doing a long loop around NYC. All the while other flights (BA, Delta, American...) come down the same approach and land without hold. Curiouser and curiouser... Maybe they don't have the equipment/chart/whatever to make the 13R landing and are holding as long as they can for a better option.

They were using RNAV Z approach 13R

You need special training

Maybe AF and Swiss didn't have it

Not really. If that were the case, there would be significant value in all the unused space at PIT & CVG, too. The Big 3 want valuable O&D traffic to & from NYC. IAD has some value for long-haul and transcon flights, but it is next to useless for domestic.

they'll continue on to the destination once the conditions have improved.

So I guess I was very lucky because I was on-board AF010 CDG-JFK today and we departed and landed perfectly on-time ! But we landed in a complete fog (we saw the ground seconds before touching. And then...90 min in line at immigration in T1...oh god

It seems like it was quite the wild day yesterday: Glancing at FlightRadar24, from midnight to now, I think I've seen about 8 flights, mostly B6, take the Van Wyck Departure from JFK to LGA. Are they covering LGA, or are they diverts to JFK, getting back in sync?
