Air Berlin leaves European airlines trade body

FRANKFURT--Air Berlin PLC (AB1.XE) said Tuesday it canceled membership with an European airline lobby group amid an escalating fight over how to deal with Middle East growth carriers.

Air Berlin pulled out of Brussels-based Association of European Airlines as it sees "no future in a protectionist aviation policy in Europe," Chief Executive Stefan Pichler said.

That's ather a move following BA(IAG who have left AEA as well. If that is / was a wise move remains to be seen. For AB it also means they save the Membership fee, every penny Counts....

I mean its not like EY owns a share or anything.

No shock here.

Just what does AEA do anyway?

Funny you mention it.

Quote:
“A strong signal is needed and other airlines have already done that,” Alitalia Chief Executive Officer Silvano Cassano, whose Rome-based company is 49 percent owned by Etihad Airways PJSC, said in an interview. Alitalia will weigh “pros and cons” and take a decision on AEA membership within days, he said.

This quote appeared yesterday in Bloomberg's business section: Alitalia Might Be Next to Quit AEA as Rift Over Gulf Rivals Grows

Also, for some reason it looks like MarketWatch might have taken down its article. The story also appears in TravelDaily and Air Transport World, but I have no idea whether or not they were quoting MarketWatch.

Is Air Serbia a member of AEA? If so they are likely to leave as well i guess.

Is weighing "pros and cons" code for "I'm waiting for a phone call" perhaps?

No; full list here:

(Note that while BA & IB have already been removed, AB is still listed)

I'm sure EY's shareholding has nothing to do with this decision, just like QR's shareholding in IAG

Having said that, none of the big EU LCC's - which can hardly be accused of ME3 influence - are members of AEA either. In general, new generation airlines are not members of this club.

The locos have their own Club. Different lobby interests requires that. IMHO it ois not very wise of BA to quit the lobby association, OK, they have a unique Position as Air London, they have left the british provinces a long time ago for a number of reasons.

But carriers like LH who serve a half dozen centres in polycentric Germany and to a lesser extend also AF Need to protect their interests. LH does not take any subsidies, why should they bear the losses from serving HAM, BER HAJ etc. forever? What would the travelling public say in These Locations if LH deserts them and leaves the field to the locos who do the schedlung according their Needs and not the Needs of a businessman who wants to be back home in the evening.
The ME3 will not step in as they are not interested. As said, BA does not have that Problem since they are focusing on l/h from London with few exceptions.

Aer Lingus left about a decade ago. What was once a fantastic research and policy development association lost its way about ten years ago. Like many industry associations I becomes a talking shop.

What one good thing have AEA achieved in the past five years?

G´day

How about Darwin Airlines err... Etihad Regional, presumably they have not been accepted by AEA yet, saves them from leaving now
