Thanks for posting this.

May I suggest changing the topic to list the destinations or indicate that it's Norwegian Longhaul? This would draw people's attention more than if it were just intra-Europe routes.

You don't say what aeroplane they'll be using, Mortyman. Last I heard, though, their only longhaul type in service is the B787. Will they be using those?

Too bad there's no added flights to OAK. I'm still waiting to see if Norwegian will start service to SEA.

I know a few "low cost" TATL carriers have had successful operations to SEA, DE, MP & FI are the ones off the top of my head, even with the pretty decent TATL offerings (given SEA's size) that are currently offered, I suspect that Norwegian would not have any problems with a seasonal 2-3 x weekly LGW-SEA-LGW, in fact if they wanted a monopoly on a route, open up LGW-PDX-LGW 2 x weekly, on a seasonal basis, just my 2 cents ...

Once weekly to LAS is a bit odd. A week in Vegas is a long time unless they're thinking go direct one way and a one stop connection the other?

From the pressrelease

"Norwegian has crew bases in New York, Fort Lauderdale and London. The routes across the Atlantic will be operated by Norwegian’s US-based crew and London-based crew."

I have no other indication that it will be the Boeing 787-8. Norwegian has Boeing 787-9 on order, wich will be added to their fleet between 2016-2018.

For some reason the pressrelease did'nt show up in my first post. I try again:

The Danish West Indies was a Danish colony in the Caribbean, first under the united kingdoms of Denmark-Norway and later, after the 1814 Treaty of Kiel, Denmark alone. The islands were sold to the United States in 1917 under the terms of the Treaty of the Danish West Indies and were organized as the United States Virgin Islands in 1917.

Denmark sold the US Virgin Islands to the US in 1916 (or else they would probably have been taken), so there is a strong Danish heritage on these islands. Read somewhere that 38% of foreign tourists to USVI are from Denmark.

Norwegian has also entered a cooperation with some of the biggest tour operators selling package tours in order to strengthen demand to these destinations.
Future flights: CPH-BOS; CPH-SVG; CPH-PVG-HKG-MNL-DVO; CPH-CDG; CPH-NRT; CPH-MIA; CPH-PVG

Every Winter for the last few years there have been charter flights from BLL to St. Croix every 14 days.
St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas were Danish territory until 1917 when the were sold to USA for 25 millon dollar. There s not a lot of VFR traffic but it is a popular Holiday destination for danes.

Yes looks like that is there angle for at least San Juan. The PDF with the release outlines activities for the destinations with a large focus on cruises out of SJU. http://media.norwegian.com/us/#/documents/information-about-norwegian-s-new-long-haul-destinations-45132

Also I think the route is CPH-SJU-STX-CPH so it is not completely separate.

St Croix has a 10000ft (3000 m) runway, so long haul service there seems attractive. In the "old" days I flew AA 707 there from JFK and had to continue to St Thomas with the American Inter Island Convair Metropolitan. Now it's different of course with a longer runway in St Thomas. But they still can't take heavies? St Croix does nor have any high terrain either.

I did not know that. Did the package comprise a stay on St Croix or elsewhere? Accommodation in the Caribbean is getting a bit expensive for Europeans as the $ is soaring. Is there a cruise ship harbor in St Croix as the usual stop is Charlotte Amalie ?
Geographically St Croix could be a good gateway to the Caribbean though.

Not at all - very smart in fact - after a week in Vegas you will have lost all the savings you accrued by flying a low cost carrier and then some; so you go back home a pauper - thus the next time around you will only be able to afford said low cost carrier

I get all of that but it doesn't change that St. Croix is not a volume destination, not even for Americans. If they can make St.Croix work they can definitely make LGW-HNL work.

My guess is that they can't fly out of STT because runway is only 7,000ft so they fly to STX (10,000ft runway), then shuttle passengers to the other islands.

You sure ? From what I can see of picturs in thedatabase, American Airlines has used both the Boeing 757 and the Airbus A300 there. Delta has used the Boeing 757 too ... Would a Boing 787-8 work ?

It's a 7,000ft runway. And it's a 757. But there's a huge difference between flying a 757 (or A300) to MIA or JFK vs. flying a 788 to Europe. Oh and there's terrain too. Let's see: Hot + Humid + short runway + terrain = Not gonna happen. Take a look at SXM for example, not a single twin flying to Europe.

DY7056 MCO1620 – 0715+1CPH 788 1

In fact, the plane coming in from MCO will probably be the one leaving to LAS 2 hours and 35 mins later.

There is a cruise terminal in Frederiksted. In the winter, they get about a dozen ships a month, mostly from Royal Caribbean with one or two Celebrity and Holland America added for variety. I am not so sure the flight has anything to do with cruise traffic though because it doesn't make for convenient connections. Depending on the week, passengers may be forced to spend as many as four nights on land between cruise and flight.

Not that I would mind spending four days in St Croix (although I do prefer St John's) but cruise passengers might not be that interested, especially at the tail end.

Cruise ships dock in Frederiksted. I spent a week in STX last year and I LOVED it. I think weekly flights may do well as the island is inexpensive and has a lot to offer.

If LAX isn't a pilot base this is turning into a costly long haul operation. Why would they make such an odd schedule. They could have made the return leg the next day so the same crew could leave on the airplane.

I bet you LAS does well and they add more. LAS is gaining a pretty impressive international service list for a vacation city! They are on a roll, alot of new service in the last few years congrats to the airport.

Amazing news! I heard about this in another thread some weeks ago; they postponed the announcement (I think) because of the 4U 9525 incident.

LAS has been getting a ton of int'l service lately. We have WK going to 3x/week, a handful of seasonal UK flights on VS and TCX, and now this DY service. Las Vegas - Stockholm...how weird does that sound?

Care to explain why it wouldn't be profitable, then?

I'm not saying it would not be profitable but based on DY's operations, they would have no problem filing their planes with low yielding passengers. Even with a economical aircraft as the 787 is, you still need to charge a fare to pay for the operations of the aircraft.

The only possible reason I can see is due to the existing competition with the BA upgrade.

Not only BA but VS offering a double daily 789 into SFO this coming Summer/Fall.

I know, I for one am happy though, now to see if I can find a Fjord cruise that fits around that schedule

Air Caraïbes flies an a330 to Paris once a week in addition their the once weekly ORY-SXM-SDQ-ORY flights.

That is fascinating. I did not know that would be possible with any meaningful load.
And here she is, departing on rwy 28 which I think is unusual for SXM.

I'm waiting for LGW-MSY. It's only a matter of time.

And if they fill really ambitious, they can start Europe-GPT to tap into Biloxi's casinos.
When wasn't America great?

That video also reminded me that Alitalia flew charters there last season. Are they planning on doing that again this year?
