Puerto Montt airport is closed, according to the above article also BRC situated just about 100 km east. According to local media in Bariloche, the city was already covered with ash this morning as the prevailing winds are from the west.

In 2011, BRC was closed for months due to an eruption. Hopefully this will not happen this time. Can the ash cloud threaten BA and the air traffic?

On the Argentina side, BRC, CPC and NQN were closed last night too.

There is a chance that the ash cloud could reach Buenos Aires over the next two days - based on forecasted wind direction but so far the red alarm has not been pulled.
Keep calm and wash your hands.

According to the experts this eruption could last for a long time. This volcano has the type of magma that can cause sub-plinian eruptions lasting weeks, months, and even years with intermitent "pulses" of higher activity and ash clouds covering the surrounding áreas. This same volcano erupted in April of 1893 and continued with the eruption ( with variable intensity or pulses of eruption ) until November or December of that year, that is almost eight months. One of the experts on the TV today said there are geological signs of an eruption of this same volcano that lasted for three years.

Lets's hope this is not the case, Argentina could suffer a big impact if this eruption last for too long.

Well the red alarm has sounded on the ground - all were evacuated within a 20 km radius from the volcano yesterday evening. Passengers that are supposed to fly to SCL from PMC can look forward to 1200 km on a bus.

This picture is shot of a colleague from the balcony outside our office in Puerto Montt yesterday afternoon only minutes after the eruption started.

This picture I took one month ago from the same balcony.

Another picture of Calbuco taken from the same lokation in August 2013.

After my estimation, the vent opening seems to be close to 500 m wide.

Anyways, the next few days will show if larger areas are affected. In 2011, NQN and EQS airports were used for months for travel to Bariloche when BRC was closed. I am surprised Neuquen was already closed, situated 460 km from the volcano. A precaution perhaps?

LN-KGL, great pictures, thank you for sharing!

When I visited Bariloche in 2012, the airport had recently reopened , ash was still seen in the terrain from the Puyehue eruption and some remnant ash clouds could be seen rising from the volcano in the distance.

Cerro Catedral ski resort had a very bad season in 2011, hotels in Bariloche had to close etc. Let's hope it won't happen again.

As of 11:15 AM ART, thus far only AC, AA (partially)*, AF, DL & UA have cancelled their flights @ EZE & AEP today. The rest appear to be operating normally, with the exception of flights to BRC, NQN and CPC - by AR, AU & 4M.

* AA has cancelled inbound flights only from DFW, JFK and MIA (1). One other flight from MIA was unaffected and landed this AM on time. Guess by the time AA ops decided to cancel flights this one was already on its way.

According to Argentina's Weather Agency, if prevailing winds hold their direction, a light ash cloud should reach the Buenos Aires area by the weekend, which will likely mean more disruptions for air travel both in and out of EZE, AEP and MVD.

Flights from Europe are on their way to EZE (such as BA 245 and LH 510) this morning as scheduled in spite of some cancellations mentioned above. So no deterioration in the Bs Aires area?

All AA flights to EZE and MVD departing April 24th were canceled. So far today's operations appear unaffected.

Yes, BRC is open again and the first flight to land today was 4M 4344 from AEP at 1:26 PM ART, LV-FUX A320. LV-BRY, another A320, as 4M 4346 followed at 2:30 PM ART and LV-FQY, B738 as AR 1680 landed at 3:48 PM ART.

NQN continues to be closed though. However it should be noted that this is not over yet and further closures of BRC could be possible. Hopefully this won't drag for long though, as prime ski season begins in June.
Keep calm and wash your hands.
