I thought PBI didn't have an "old terminal", the terminal built in 1960 is the current one (albeit heavily modified and renovated in the 55 years since then). Before the terminal was built in 1960, the passenger area was simply a boarding ramp and a cyclone fence with a small shack-like-thing for selling tickets.
Quoting 727LOVER (Reply 98):
Nope....and I can tell you that with my own eyes and experiences. The old terminal opened in 1966 and closed when the current terminal opened in 1988. The DL terminal opened in 1974

The 1966 terminal is in fact the 2nd terminal at PBI. The original terminal was on the south side of the field off of Southern Blvd, just west of where the current customs facility is located.

I wonder if, given AA's large customer base and loyalty in Haiti, does AA have a Haitian Creole translated site yet? Technically, creole speakers can read and understand French, although they are not mutually exclusive transcriptions. I do know at MIA they have a Port Au Prince check-in with agents fluent in Creole to assist Haitians who do not speak English, a nice touch by AA, I must say.

Is it true that AA serves free meals in coach on FLL/MIA-PAP? I read that somewhere, AA keeps the free meals in coach on these two routes as apparently whenever the airline tries to remove them, the Haitian government accuses them of racism.

When I go to book MIA-PAP on aa.com it lists only a beverage service for the flight in economy.

If you want a glimpse of the old terminal, look for Police Academy 5 online. There are scenes in the lobby, south escalators, and gate 1-3 area. The security scene is not the airport.

In economy class there is always some kind of small sandwich snack on these PAP flights which I travel on regularly. i believe the reasoning being NOT for complaints from the Haitian government bur rather a "cashless" system simply would not work on such a flights where a majority of the diaspora would not have debit/credit cards.

That said, the Haitian govt has complained in the past about various incidents where Haitians were not treated as fairly as anyone else might be on any other American Airlines flight to any other destination.

Interesting quote from EK president Tim Clark about the airline's South Florida plans:

He declined to identify which US cities Emirates was considering flying to, but said: “The troika [of US airlines] asked for a freeze on our expansion in the US, but it’s not their place to do it. Why should we stop our expansion? Orlando has been knocking on our door for a long time, and as soon as we opened that route the mayor of Miami went nuclear, wanting us to fly there too.

“Places like Denver and Fort Lauderdale would love to have Emirates flying there, because when you come into those kinds of airports you bring half of the Middle East and Africa with you. There are multiple entities in the US who are sick and tired of the troika,” he added.

That's interesting that he mentions FLL. Because I assume EK would rather serve FLL because of the B6 feed. But I believe the runway is not long enough. There would have to be a fuel stop....but WHERE?

Yes, also the immigration problems.

Mitt Romneyesque people of Miami REFUSE to travel northward to FLL? I guess not when you can afford $8,000 a trip.

By the way, let's be clear....I mentioned FLL. because Tim Clark did.

MCO has long been a major destination for wealthy Middle Easterners. Saudi Arabian served the airline until 9/11. It also is the primary gateway for the Central Florida region, itself a wealthy and populous area.

Question for those with contacts (or work) at MIA operations for AA (and I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask). I noticed that AA sent a second flight today to TGU (flight 9779 tail N70020). Was this the first time AA sends an A319? Was this perhaps a training flight? I can't find the return flight back. Thank you for any information.

Well I saw 09 in use yesterday afternoon when driving along 836. I did not know that 09/27 is almost 4 km long.

When I arrived here on May 6, I was surprised to see the immigration almost deserted, did not therefore use the self service possibility but went straight to the officer. I was through in less than 15 min in spite of the fact that there were only about three officers working. Good timing I guess. The load factor on IB 6117 was not more than 50-60% that day.

Miami-Dade County commissioners voted 11-0 last week to allow Miami International Airport plans to spend $212 million to upgrade its Central Terminal’s Concourse E. Commissioners accepted $4.6 million from the Florida Department of Transportation to help fund the project. The state department already had $22 million in its five-year work plan ticketed for the project, leaving the county Aviation Department to fund about almost $186 million from its reserve maintenance budgets to finish the job. Items included in the plans for Concourse E and Concourse E satellite include four new passenger bridges, nine new passenger elevators, air conditioning replacement and refurbishing, re-roofing and installation of efficient LED lighting fixtures.

This is a scheduled runway rehab. Our ops office here in FLL received the notice of an increased chance of MIA diversions if there were storms in the area that affected MIA's ability to handle traffic flow with the reduced runway capacity.

FLL's 10L-28R just finished a cycle of light overnight maintaince that ran from mid April to tonight (5-15) that amounted to about 14 days.

RE: South Florida Aviation Thread - Part 4

Hi South Florida Anetters...
Hope you dont mind a quick question, i am flying into Miami with my young family on 9th August on BA (BA207). I have heard of waiting in line for 3 hrs at passport control? Does this sound feasible - should i be expecting this or is this just make believe? I'm just quite anxious after a 9 hour flight of having 3 particularly grumpy children (3,7,9)...
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Regards,
Ben
