Qatar Airways Announces BOS/ATL/LAX, To Double JFK

Mon May 04, 2015 9:47 am

http://www.businessinsider.com.au/r-...lights-may-rile-us-airlines-2015-5

BOS and the new daily JFK service with the new A350XWB, while ATL & LAX will get, most probably, the B777-200LR.

BOS will begin from 16MAR16, LAX from 01JAN16 & ATL from 01JUL16

Let the games begin

Translation: "in your face, Delta!" (PS - any chance of a codeshare?  )

This is just going to add a barrel full of Middle Eastern oil to the whole subsidy debate.

Well this is going to be a looooong thread.

Anyway another Asian one for BOS.... (!!!!!!). JAL (NRT), Cathay (HKG), Emirates (DXB now going double daily), Turkish (IST), Hainan (PEK), El-Al (TLV)... now Qatar (DOH).

I love this. I love this I love this

Service on US airlines is a total disgrace. The US airlines are making millions and millions in profits because we (the consumer) have no other option but to fly in them.

I hope the Gulf carriers start flying to every major US airport soon

That'd put some heat on the US airlines to improve their sorry service

Great news

Is it really surprising though? Given the backlash from Delta's CEO on the ME3 it was only a matter of time before one of them came knocking on the door in ATL.

BOS is a surprise though, only because of the major connections added to the BOS network in the last 2 years.
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

ATL in July 2016? Why are they giving away their hand so early ? That's just begging for EK to pre-empt them with yet another unneeded A380

Announcing well in advance, are they (ME3) scare of getting any sanction from the US in the case of the subsides???

According to the article, JFK and BOS are A350 services, ATL and LAX are B777.

It will be nice to see the A350 spreading in the network, but I though JFK could go to A380, specially now that EK and EY are there with A380. The business class in QR is good, but not private at all. Economy is good with nice IFE.

They should, but will they?? some of them are getting new planes, AA with B787, but I don´t think we have seen anything extraordinary on them.

the question is always the same, how much traffic are the ME3 taking away from the US3?? I don´t think we are talking about a huge number, European Airlines like BA, LH, AF are suffering more.

I was very skeptical of this news report until I noticed the press release on QR's site

http://www.qatarairways.com/us/en/pr...elease.page?pr_id=pressrelease_usa

The BOS flight can be booked on Qatar's website: schedule is pretty much identical to Emirates first flight.

BOS-DOH 23:05-18:10+1
DOH-BOS 08:20-15:05
Airlines flown: A3, AA, AC, AF, AM, BA, B6, CA, CO, CX, DL, EA, EL, IB, LH, MI, MQ, NH, NW, NZ, OU, PE, QF, S4, SQ, TP, UA, US, VS, WE, WN

2019: CX BOS-HKG, WE HKG-HKT, CA HKT-PEK-EWR, B6 EWR-BOS

Not shocking news in the slightest, QR, EK and EY will all naturally look for expansion in the US, they have the tools and the market to make these flights work. ATL though. I can't help but feel that route has been helped along quickly so that QR can flip the bird at someone. I am looking forwards to this. DING DING!

I think QR can use Terminal B facilities for their depatures. Terminal B is not awfully crowded and is empty during that time of the night. Although the US Airways lounge may not meet QR standards   Arrivals - yes. But BOS is still better than many airports in the country - Terminal E will look nice now even more with the likes of reputed international carriers

With the new middle of the night departure to JFK, I wonder if QR will consider switching the PHL schedule to the typical North America mid-morning departure that connects with more flights from India.

Sure they might be making millions now but they are still billions in debt from the last down turn for subsidizing everyones airfare and they are prob not too far away from another down turn

At least 25% of DL's DXB traffic connects on beyond, mostly to India. I say at least 25% because those are only single ticket transactions. A lot more probably double ticket.

There are a couple of valid reasons (IMO) why the launch of these USA destinations is pushed into 2016:

1. A359 delivery timetable (obvious for BOS route)

2. More importantly, QR realizes that they face a severe capacity bottle neck situation with regards to their India bound flights in terms of capacity being offered. Their team now has almost a year to sort this out and ensure that they get more access into India in order to allow its entire network to feed it by making the departure timings cater to two different hub wave banks at DOH airport rather than the present one only (2000-2130 departure in particular). If this is not resolved by the time BOS comes online in particular, it will be very difficult attracting decent S/F across their USA services !

FYI I expect JFK to become a double daily A359 operated service by Summer 2016 season in order to make it easier both for crew rotations + selling capacity.

On another note, I dont see how and why ATL was chosen ahead of SFO !

at 2300 the departure isnt going to be a huge deal for Terminal E, its the 1500 Arrival.

The more congested Terminal E gets the more opportunities for PVD though. Anything ethnic or stronger O&D (i.e carribean) becomes a higher target to be shifted down.

That is going to be a big issue, the new GOI is not particulary open to add more flights/eats to the middle east, they are trying to get more direct flights to new destinations, they already deny more access to EK and TK, so maybe QR gets something but I don´t think it will be a huge boost.

QR network in India is not bad, but they don´t have many flights, BOM 1 daily only, DEL 2 daily, BLR 1 daily... they have a lot of points but low seat count. And because it is regulated by seats they can´t even upgauge to bigger planes.

Quoting behramjee (Reply 34):

I was also surprise giving the big communities in SFO bay area of Asians, maybe it is because ATL has much less competence to SE Asia and they try to get that. ATL is an important market if they can get nice corporate contracts, but they also have to fight DL and Skyteam on that.

What is behind the expansion of routes into BOS??

At it's core, it's been an underserved market. Strong economy, especially in finance and bio-medical; strong higher-education base with world-wide appeal; and a relatively wealthy and sophisticated population. All that combined with the fact that due to its geographical location, BOS is not a hub airport for any of the alliances.

However, with all that said, it feels more like a pile-on scenario of late. Don't forget, about 18 months ago, BOS had good services to Europe, but nothing to Asia, the Middle East or Central/South America. With the introduction of the new "long-thin" aircraft, service out of BOS is changing. Quickly. Suddenly it has, or will have, service to NRT, PEK, PVG, HKG, IST, TLV, DXB, DOH, MEX and PTY. I'm not sure whether all that market existed 18 months ago, or that it can be created. Good luck to them, though.

I agree with you pretty much on everything, but the first of those services (JAL) started in April 2012. so that is 3 years ago already. Given that Qatar is to start in March 2016 (and TLV, PVG and MEX this summer) it is a 4-year frame to get those services. Still quite impressive though.

On the contrary there is sufficient O & D from ATL. Lots of traffic on the ATL-DXB flight continue beyond DXB, so similarly the situation is same for ATL-DOH-XXX. However the O & D to Doha will be minuscule compared to DXB. I think this will invite EK to start flights to ATL.

DL and the Euro carriers are quite competitive when booking ahead but for those booking within 4 weeks or in high season, the ME3 carriers have much lower prices and that is where they get lots of passengers.

With the new middle of the night departure to JFK, I wonder if QR will consider switching the PHL schedule to the typical North America mid-morning departure that connects with more flights from India.

Does anyone have the numbers for DOH-PHL? I'm curious to know if the current timings is sustaining on it's own..

I'm a bit surprised that QR had PHL before LAX. I'm curious too, are they doing well on the PHL-DOH route? Although Philadelphia is a bigger city than Boston, BOS has way more international carriers. QR is really an outlier at PHL.

1. A359 delivery timetable (obvious for BOS route)

I wonder if PHL would switch to the A359 or even 787. Are they filling the 777?

First, to compare city populations dismisses the fact that Boston is geographically small. Of COURSE it will have fewer people than Philadelphia. But when you look at metro area figures, the cities are closely matched. And then when you factor in other demographic criteria like universities, business mix, medical, biotech, income levels, etc. then I think BOS actually eclipses PHL. And this, largely, is what international carriers are looking at.

They added PHL because of OW and all of the connections available at PHL. However, yes I would have expected LAX before PHL. I haven't seen any numbers but I'd venture to guess QR is only doing mediocre on the DOH-PHL flight and I think it would greatly benefit from a change in the flight times to the more traditional times for US flights to/from DOH. Currently the flight is not really an option for anyone going traveling to/from India unless a ~12 hour layover in DOH is acceptable.

I believe the QR 787 is not modified for a long haul flight to the US from a crew rest perspective. DOH-PHL is currently a 77L and the 359 has a bit more capacity than the 77L.

Great news

I could not agree more!!!

Can't wait for Emirates to join QATAR at MIA.

I'd rather much have Etihad than Emirates in MIA to be honest
