Gizmodo Ranks Top 9 Carrier Wi-Fi Services

Tue May 05, 2015 6:28 am

For those A-Net users who are not familiar with Gizmodo, I will summarize by saying that it was once an interesting technology blog that has become far more tawdry and gossipy in its content, most of which is editorialized clickbait in my opinion.

To the content of the article: the author, Adam Clark Estes, gives a brief primer on the basics of airliner wi-fi operation. Then he lists the top 9 carriers based on their wi-fi product.

Article linked here: http://gizmodo.com/every-major-airli...d-ranked-1701017977/+whitsongordon

In short, here is this list:

1. JetBlue
2. Virgin America
3. Delta
4. Southwest
5. Alaska Airlines
6. American Airlines
7. US Airways
8. United
9. Air Canada

What do you think? Agree/disagree? I do wish BA would implement on board wi-fi. I can only watch season 1 of Curb Your Enthusiasm so many times on the IFE.

I don't think they actually tried any of them since there isn't any data that is used to prove their assertions. Instead, they only consider the technology used by each airline.

I do wish BA would implement on board wi-fi.

For me personally, there are far too many games, films and TV shows for me to watch on BA Long haul to care about Wi-fi.
As for short haul, I can manage an hour or two without wi-fi. I just load a film onto my phone or tablet and watch that if I get bored of the view outside.

If the IFE selection really bothers you, book with another airline or load some films/episodes onto your tablet or smart phone. I do, but so far on BA (and AA) Long haul, I've not had the need to even touch my personal devices. I run out of flight time before I run out of films or TV to watch.

If you really can't be without wi-fi for the length of a flight, seek help dude, you have a problem.

I used for the first time on board internet access when i flew with TK. (A-330)
The connection and speed was very good and i was able to watch streaming movies without problems,
And all this for free during the whole flight.

I found it a little surprising that UA was placed (not ranked) so low. I've usually had pretty good experiences with their Wi-Fi, though maybe that's because I seem to only ever fly 739s now, so I guess I have a more consistent experience. I thought the A320 system was the same when I was one one a few weeks ago, though I could be wrong...

Most US planes I see still don't have it. And last time it did, IAD-SFO in March, it did not work.

Best product I have used is Lufthansa!

Turkish Airlines wifi on their 77W was pretty good. It was free back then, think there is a charge now possibly. I believe they'e currently rolling it out on the A333's too.

Etihad asked for USD $20 for 14 hour AUH-JFK

VX wants a crazy $33 for 4.5hr SFO-JFK

For me, VX is an extremely poor value, even if you can give me 200mbps (which is mostly useless since video streaming and VoIP are both disallowed)

I used it on their A-333 so it is available on some of them.
It was free in Business only.

I just skimmed through the article, but setting aside the equipment differences how can there be a major difference between most of these carriers? With the exception of jetBlue and Southwest all those carriers use GoGo. The difference should be almost minimal.

I had trouble with LH when I used it. I was on either an A333 or A332 last year, whichever one has the new Business seats. Anyway, it didn't show up as a WiFi network but rather as a cell signal, so my phone technically wasn't in Airplane mode I don't think. Or maybe it was and the "cell" signal showed up regardless? At one point in the flight, it stopped working, and AT&T tried to charge me for roaming in Norway, even though I was never there! It was a strange experience.

For those unaware, Gawker media (the parent blog of Gizmodo) does a lot of "ranking" posts that are largely satirical in nature. Keep the "smarmy" nature of their brand in mind when reading their stuff. Take it too seriously and you're in trouble.

Given the list, we have to assume it's restricted to just NA carriers. As such, I'm shocked that Southwest is so far up the list. I've actually flown DL on my last two transcons because of WN's unbelievably bad wifi service. I've paid the $8 fee on WN for full access and each time I gave up on using it after the first hour of flight. Mind you, I LOVE WN and consider them to be the best domestic carrier around, but their wifi service is, in my opinion, their achilles heel.

As for International travel, I just flew LH on Sunday LAX to FRA and their wifi was unbelievably fast. Granted, it was still slow in the big scheme of things, but it was the fastest airborne wifi I've experienced to date.

Haha, maybe. Of course wifi isn't dispositive in choosing a carrier; I've been flying with them all my life for a number of reasons and have no intention of changing at the moment. But on a long haul, sometimes I have to spend some time on productivity. Without email communication to clients or other colleagues, it really is a handicap. I think that today it's a reasonable amenity for a major carrier to implement in flight wifi. If Emirates can tout showers, I think it's a comparatively meager request!

And I'm being a bit flippant about the IFE on BA. I almost always find something to enjoy. But I fly the same routes often enough that I've run out of new things to watch. I can always count on Curb and Big Bang Theory.

Never tried any of the games.

How on earth did Southwest get 4th? I like WN, I fly them a lot but the wifi is absolutely the worst. Constantly dropping connections and painfully slow, reminds me of AOL circa 1996. I used it a bit last year when I was A+ and it was free but I refuse to pay for it now I am a lowly A, as it is so bad. I've paid and used GoGo on DL and US and it's been fine, I used the DL wifi on a TATL last year and it was amazing, very stable and fast. Got a ton of work done, probably more productive than sat in the office!

Just my two-cents here, I was onboard Lufthansa ORD-DUS and I was able to stream a live soccer match, full length, with almost no problem on my iPhone. Very nice WiFi.

I flew UA just two weeks ago. The streaming wi-fi was awful. Programs kept buffering on every channel.
Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

I am a Medallion flyer on Delta and Gogo sucks. It is very slow. I was on an ATL-LAX 767 recently and I gave up on getting any work accomplished for the 4.5 hours we were on board. I had to scramble as soon as I arrived to work in the terminal. Gogo is awful. SWA's internet is worse than that. The technology is too slow now.

Flew AA a month ago (MIA-SEA) and the service was awful. Wish I could get a refund. Loading, buffering ... what a waste.
