Quoting RWA380 (Reply 5): I've never heard of a carrier "expressing formal intent" to start a route. Usually a filing with the appropriate government agencies brings a carriers attempts to light. I know carriers make route announcements, is this just a different way of saying the same thing,? What are the required steps a foreign carrier should take when they want to start another US route, when they are an already known carrier to US airports? |
Quoting TK787 (Reply 11): And also the news of daily JNB flight to be extended to Maputo. |

Quoting TK787 (Reply 22): People arriving from Europe and directly going to their ships. Or is the cruise market from overseas is too small to play a part? |
Quoting mah4546 (Reply 24): |
Quoting Miami (Reply 25): Didn't someone say it wasn't happening because it was not under the list of planned destinations? |
Quoting Miami (Reply 4): Told ya. But no one wanted to believe me. |
Quoting mah4546 (Reply 24): Not surprising at all, even though so many others who are very well informed and knowledgeable about Turkish insisted this was not going to happen anytime soon because of the "bad taste" Turkish had from flying to Miami 15 years ago. |
Quoting leftyboarder (Reply 7): This has nothing to do with US approvals. Turkish companies that are public (i.e. with shares floating in the stock market) have to disclose important events, and in the case of airlines this also includes route announcements. TK usually has 3 steps in route starts: 1) Declare intent to serve a city in its publications or interviews by upper management 2) Announce the formal intent to stock exchange via a filing 3) Announce the route itself with starting date, A/C and schedule MIA had already been mentioned earlier in interviews etc, but this is the first time 2nd step was completed. Now we can wait for the actual route announcement, hopefully soon. |
Quoting leftyboarder (Reply 15): They should try DTW or maybe ATL first. And SEA? |
Quoting OA260 (Reply 29): Ok you can party now and open the Champs |
Quoting yellowtail (Reply 19): Even a broken clock is right twice a day! Just kidding. Congrats. |
Quoting flymia (Reply 23): The international cruise market is small compared to Americans who make up something like 85% of all cruise passengers world wide. |
Quoting Miami (Reply 25): Didn't someone say it wasn't happening because it was not under the list of planned destinations? |
Quoting RWA380 (Reply 33): I'm skeptical of that percentage you are bantering about, when they were interviewing people off the Costa Concordia there were a handful of American accents that I heard, mostly European languages. |

Quoting mah4546 (Reply 34): Costa is a cruise line that specifically targets European travelers |
Quoting flymia (Reply 35): However, only 51% of the world's cruise traffic come from the United States. |

Quote: (Miami, May 7, 2015) – Turkish Airlines, Turkey’s Four-Star rated flag carrier, has officially announced that it will launch Miami-Istanbul service on Sunday, October 25, with direct flights connecting the Gateway of the Americas with the historic gateway linking Europe and Asia. The new service will operate daily using the award-winning carrier’s Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, and Istanbul will mark MIA’s 18th European destination when service begins. “The leadership team at MIA is to be congratulated for landing yet another major international carrier and for continuing to propel our local economy forward,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “We welcome Turkish Airlines and its devoted customers to our community with open arms.” One of the largest and fastest-growing carriers in the world, Turkish Airlines currently serves more than 260 destinations around the globe from its centrally located Istanbul hub, which offers easy access to Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. A member of the Star Alliance, Turkish Airlines’ quick growth has been accompanied by a steady stream of industrywide recognitions for outstanding customer service. Along with being rated a World Top 10 Airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards each of the past four years, Turkish has also won consecutive “Best Airline in Europe” honors for the same four-year time period. The carrier has also earned accolades for its meal service product in Business Class and Economy Class, alike. “In a year full of exciting developments at MIA, the introduction of new Miami-Istanbul service on Turkish Airlines is at the top of the list,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “It doesn’t get better than directly connecting two incredible gateway cities and three continents aboard a world-class carrier. MIA is proud to partner with Turkish Airlines and offer our valued customers access to Istanbul through our ever-expanding network of domestic and international destinations.” Istanbul – boasting a population exceeding 14 million, more than 2,000 years of history, and a cross section of cultures and religions – draws millions of visitors each year to its historic center, much of which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sixth-largest city in the world straddles the European and Asian continents, separated by the Bosporus strait. Istanbul’s historic center and Ataturk Airport are located on the larger European side of the city. Miami-Istanbul flights will operate daily, with inbound flights scheduled to arrive in Miami at 8:30 p.m. and scheduled departures to Istanbul at 10:30 p.m. Turkish Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ER aircraft offers a three-class configuration with 28 Business Class seats, 63 Premium Economy seats, and 246 seats in Economy Class for a maximum capacity of 337 passengers.
