Looks like 4 victims and a heck of a mess on 285 for the rest of the day.
Careful, doors are closing, and will not reopen. Please wait for the next train.

I really wish the media would stop using the term. "Small plane"

They've described anything from a C-172 to a Gulfstream IV with that "small plane" crap

When it comes to airplanes, its either: jumbo jet, airliner, or small plane

Wow, it looks like maybe it hit the median barricade, not much left of the plane.

Piper PA-2, according to the FAA ... but I've also seen a small Beachcraft mentioned.

Apparently, per early witness reports, it was either coming in westbound alongside the interstate and hit a semi-trailer, or it was trying to turn around to return to PDK, and hit the truck in the middle of the turn (just ran out of altitude).

Whatever scenario it ends up being, the final impact was against the median barrier and there's pretty much complete destruction. Estimates are 8+ hours for investigation and cleanup.

This is going to cause the biggest traffic headache (not caused by an ice storm) this city has seen since a gasoline tanker caught on fire UNDER (and subsequently damaged) an I-285 bridge a dozen or so years ago.

You can fully expect 10-20 mile long backups from this, and complete, utter, gridlock on the nortth side of the city.

I work in Roswell and live in southern Gwinnett County. Suffice it to say I won't be going home this way today. I did drive through there this morning. Crazy.

It appears that this is the aircraft and flight ...

It was, tragically, apparently a grandfather, two sons, and a fiance' who were lost in the accident.

Highway is now reopened.

There, sadly, just wasn't much to clean up ... most of the wreckage was consumed in the fire.

Only thing remotely recognizable in the news pictures was the engine block.

Very sad. Over here in Vinnings today but having got my pilots license out of PDK, I know the area well. Sadly when things go wrong on takeoff out of PDK there aren't a lot of options.

Originally I first went to engine out. But the more I thought about it, 4 in a PA-2 with fuel to Mississippi and assuming some luggage has got to be pushing the weight limit. I really hope that isn't the case.

That was a PA-32 formerly known as a Cherokee Six. Quite a capable aircraft. I've seen people ship pianos in those things. I notice in the article they state that it's a "complex aircraft". But with fixed gear I don't think so. They are almost as easy to fly as the other Cherokee's are. I think even with full fuel they have a useful load around 1450lbs or so.

I used to instruct in Piper Cherokee's. You almost have to work at it to get into trouble in one. Must have been a engine failure or something like that or gotten way out of the CG limits.

While it is too early to speculate, it was either overweight or engine problems or both.

I am guessing they must have stopped at PDK to pick up someone. AVL-PDK-UOX isnt the most direct route.

I'm not defending the media, but I think of a small plane as a single engine. recip, seating 6ish. Then there are the twins and single engine turboprops, and then the biz jet, of which the G-IV being in the large biz jets. Heck, the G-IV is close to DC-9-10s.

Thanks Rugger. I thought model of Pipet was the equivalent to the 172. I was wrong on that then. 1450 with full fuel is a very nice payload for single engine.

This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

While I agree it could be anything, one would think if it was an engine failure that the pilot would try to land it down the highway, not across it. But who knows...

Quoting sparky35805 (Reply 16):

While it does occur rarely, there have been safety improvements in regards to fuel truck hose modifications that are supposed to make this practically nil in occurrence

The cabin in the Six (Lance) is very long. Lots of room for hauling cargo, pax, etc. But if you are not careful with your cargo loading, you can end up with an aft CG.

It has been a while since I have heard of one being fueled with jet fuel too.I was being a bit sarcastic there.I 1970,two fuelers there at PDK fueled a Martin 404 with jet fuel.It made it to about Mooreland Ave before they tried to land on 285.Several people in cars lost their lives along withe some on the Martin. The fuelers thought they were fueling a Convair 580,I know that was a long time ago and there have been other accidents since due to the same problem, but there was still wreckage at this sight when I came through on 285 a few days later.

Complex aircraft includes variable pitch propeller, also. Not just retractable. Might even be above 200 horse
power. Been a long time since my early flying days.

Unlikely the fuel. I think we've gotten past the fuel type mix ups.
PA 32 does not look like a jet powered plane, I'd say.

Unfortunately, we have not. Just last fall a medical plane was lost in New Mexico, jet fuel in a piston commander.

Negative ghost rider, a complex aircraft needs retractable landing gear, variable or constant speed prop and flaps. For example the Caravan is a high performance but not complex. Only a high performance endorsement is required. Many commerical applicants get their complex endorsement in an pa 28r 200 or 201 ie arrow, 172 rg etc. but as these aircraft are 200 and under hp, they do not need their high performance endorsement. Conversely a 182 pilot only needs a high performance endorsement.
