OAG Changes 5/15/2015: UA +DEN-CLT/RDU

FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Unfortunate, but given that it's only a few CRJs per day, it probably makes sense to consolidate with larger jets to PHX.

UA up in DEN and EWR nearly across the board, basically flat at IAD ORD and SFO, and cuts nearly across the board at IAH. International, especially Caribbean looks to be taking the brunt of the cuts. UA completely dropping ARN and OSL is pretty big.

I don't think so. If DL is really out of gates in SEA, adding in the shoulder season is their best bet to increase pressure on AS.

I assume it is seasonal. It's sure it's supposedly related to the strong dollar making it too cheap for Americans to travel to Europe.

I believe that the OSL and ARN are just the winter seasonal cuts. Norwegian has been lowering yields, and with SAS also sending in a 330, it doesn't make sense to send a 75 daily during the winter.

DL flew SEA-BZN during the holidays last year, and on Saturdays for most of the ski season, IIRC.

SAL = San Salvador, El Salvador. SAL was a hub for TA and is still a hub for AV.

I noticed that as well. OSL and ARN must be primarily carrying European passengers. We Americans are bad at traveling. Even among people with the means and time to travel. I'd say most Americans never pay attention to exchange rates anyways so the currency incentive is not driving demand.

It's not just international travel, either. I'm amazed how few Americans have even visited California, New York, or Washington DC. I've met a surprisingly large number of East Coast people who have never ventured west of Chicago.

Agreed. Americans are the least traveled people you will ever find. It's sad.

Quoting threeifbyair (Reply 13):

On this I disagree. Americans planning a trip to Europe pay a lot of attention to it in that it sets hotel rates and such.

In general, the U.S. carriers are about 70% USA resident passengers on int'l. I suspect the issue there is that in the Winter to markets like those the traffic shifts to Europeans coming to the USA to shop (which is hurt by the currency situation) because Americans generally don't want to go to somewhere that cold in the Winter.

ARN and OSL are seasonal cuts only those flights will return mid-spring of 2016.

As far as the Caribbean I think UA is making the right decision reducing a lot of Caribbean flights back to Saturday or Saturday Sunday service only. During the 2014-2015 season a lot of flights from EWR, IAD and ORD were operating 4 or 5 x weekly to some destinations in the Caribbean. On weekends the flights were over sold but those flights that operated during the middle of week we almost never full we were lucky if we had 50 passengers on the plane during the middle of the week. I'm not sure why UA thought having all these extra flights during the middle of the week would work when the most people during the winter are looking to escape the cold for at least a week either Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday. During the week those aircraft can be put to better use within the domestic network during the winter months then on the weekends fly back and forth between the U.S. and Caribbean.

San Salvador is SAL

Salta, AR is SLA.

Too bad it didn't mean Salta. The Salta, Argentina area is an extremely fascinating and underrated area to visit.

I don't think so. If DL is really out of gates in SEA, adding in the shoulder season is their best bet to increase pressure on AS.

pretty sure they did last year Sat only....

Now it's daily. Big increase...

Any chance they might try this one from PHX? Don't know how much west coast traffic Santa Fe gets.

Probably just a matter of time.

Would seem to make more sense, but I guess the other question is how solid PHX is. Seems fairly solid as of now.

Is AA still flying DFW-SAF? If so - considering the size of the SAF market - that might be the only route they need.

I think HP used to fly PHX-SAF via codeshare with Mesa on Mesa-branded planes, little prop jobs. Don't exactly remember what type. I may be mistaken though.

UA flew DEN-RDU with a 737 beginning in 2007. It ended due to fuel prices in 2008.

So how long until Skywest is no longer flying for AA at LAX? Would seem that whatever doesn't fit the 175 is being cut.

All three of these would be good routes for QX or OO to pick up for AS. I think QX has done LAX-RDM before. QX does SAN-MRY, so why not SEA-MRY and LAX-MRY?

They would essentially be handing their westbound traffic to UA via DEN. PHX-SAF makes a lot of sense as it would connect the entire Western US to SAF.

Yes and no. I don't see AS putting 70+ seaters on those in any scenario since that it their whole deal with QX and further AS would be smart to stay away from these battleground markets in LAX. I know these are small, but DL or UA are still going to want to grab those pax more than AS should.

If it sticks, the only SAF service will be 2X DEN on UA* and 4x DFW on AA*. All on 50 seat jets.

Another AS route. Has DL ever flown this before during ski season?

Don't know about Delta but NW flew it.
