Skywest Gear Collapse LAX

Mon May 11, 2015 4:05 pm

Fox News is showing a Skywest CRJ200 operating as UAX disabled on a runway with an apparent L/H MLG collapse or failure to extend. Flight aware showing and LAX ground stop in effect for inbounds.

Glad everyone was safe.

Lot of UAX incidents lately. I wonder how much damage that did to the wing/body.

Great landing and a great catch by cv63... Right place right time or listening to ATC and hustled down there?

No idea, but plenty of spare parts parked out at IGM.

For the record, from around Thanksgiving 2014 she was at 31955 hours and 26,479 cycles.

By the looks of the photo, the manual gear extension handle has already been pulled (open nosegear doors). Wouldn't be surprised if it turns out the left MLG uplock was incorrectly installed.

With LAX already down to 3 runways, this can't be good for the airport.

LAX has had all 4 runways open for a couple weeks now. 24L was closed until about 5 min ago. No delays associated with this incident.

Yes, decent job on the video.

However, Fox News first reported the aircraft to be a SkyWest "DC-9 or MD-80 type." And this was with the N-number clearly visible in the photo. Apparently, they don't know how to check the F.A.A.'s aircraft registry?

Saw a video of Good Day LA, here's a quick sample... Reported that only 4 people were on board, it was a "Canadian Regional Jet", the left back gear had collapsed, and last but not least the CRJ has beaten Airbus by increasing capacity to 700 hundred passengers.

Aside from poking fun at news media, major props to the flight crew for keeping this situation mild.

We obviously do not know all the details but there has been a similar event with the CRJ.
I believe that the manual gear extension handle would relax back after being pulled and stop the extension.
After the plane was on the ground and plane jacked up Mx pulled the manual handle and when released the cable would relax and the manual extension would stop. Mx then pulled continuously on the handle until the gear completely dropped.

Again we do not know what happened here but a thought.

Anyone know the status of the airframe? Could it be repaired or is it a W/O?

Probably because the chopper pilot was involved? Otherwise, it would have been a 747 or Jumbo jet, moments from disaster!

First, Excellent flying by the pilots. Now, is the Fox News Chopper pilots name really Rick Dicker. Really? That is an awesome name! I wonder how Sully will spin this that Regional Airline Pilots are still under trained and not safe.

If he's asked, perhaps he'll say that this incident is proof that the higher experience requirements are effective.

I can almost guarantee that those pilots were hired before the rules change. I have very strong opinions about Mr. Sullenberger, and none of them good. He has done more damage to the airline industry since his claim to fame than good. He should have acted more like Capt. Al Haynes, and kept his ego in check.

Not so sure the state of the industry is Sullenbergers fault as perhaps the crew that killed a plane load of passengers in Buffalo, NY? They will have to take most of the blame for the 1500 hour rule.

This crew did a nice job so regardless of what their backgrounds or experience levels are so they deserve a well earned thumbs up.

Well, I wouldn't say that one or 2 bad crews constitutes a failure or deficiency in training. Is AA unsafe because they crashed a couple planes in recent history by flying thunderstorms or landing in heavy rain? Is Delta Unsafe because they tried landing in a thunderstorm and killed a lot of people? Colgan had 1 crash. How is that justification for a systemic failure of Regional Pilots?

Simple...The lack of experience was more than a casual cause in the Colgan accident. In fact it was one of the primary causes.

Something tells me this 1500 hour rule has personally impacted you?

No, it hasn't. I have been in the industry since 2007. If anything, it has made my ability to move up better because there is literally NO ONE to fill seats at regional airlines and all the majors are going to be dealing with it in another 3-4 years. In 3 years, DL UA and AA will be parking 76 seat regional because there w9n't be enough pilots. What I see coming is the US airlines hiring a lot more foreign pilots to fly here in the US. I see in 3 years, most of the new hires coming from pilot puppy mills hiring pilots from Indonesia and China who would be willing to work for 25k/yr. Because anyone with half a brain won't take on $150k in debt to make 25k a year for 4 years to be an instructor, then have to make another 25k a year for 2-3 years while being a regional FO, before making a so.ewhat modest 60k a year till a major will hire you. I currently work in a training department for an airline, and let me tell you, I would take a 250 hr UND or Embry Riddle grad any day of the week over the current 1500 hour pilots we have coming in. And what's worse? We are still turning pilots away because of their past experience or problems. The Regional Airline Industry is about to experience another massive overhaul. And I see in a couple years, pilots with 1500 hrs and no checkered past just being hired by the majors instead of the regional airlines. So the regional will once again be what they were, the guys who couldn't make it at the majors. Sounds like fun!

Well you have some valid points. I do not see any major influx of pilots from China, Europe or the ME so I think that is a bogus complaint. So what do you do in Training Development, sounds interesting?

Since when does Fox News ever check into factual information before reporting something?

Rick Dickert is a reporter and meteorologist, but he is not a pilot. I suspected that when he stated the gear "collapsed" on landing. It didn't collapse, it never extended - hence the emergency being declared.

He is spot on. We are seeing a lot of 2nd career professionals coming To the airlines now. It seems that the new regional pilot is 53-55 and already collecting a pension from a previous career.
