In the J.D. Power survey's individual airline ratings, JetBlue earned the top overall mark with 801 points on the 1,000-point scale. That gave JetBlue the top score both in its "Low-Cost Carrier" category and among all carriers surveyed. JetBlue's finish in 2015 marks the 11th-consecutive year that it has earned the top overall score in the J.D. Power North American Satisfaction Study.

Alaska Airlines garnered the highest score (719) in the category for "Traditional Carriers," giving it J.D. Power's top score in the category for the eighth year in a row.

Alaska Air bested second-place finisher Delta Air Lines by 10 points. United Airlines finished last out of the six "traditional" carriers with a score of 665.

JD Power awards are done annually, and the awards are done each May.

If you look at the numbers YoY, AS is slipping and Delta is gaining. Here's to next year.

Why is Alaska slipping?

It was just a matter of time before DL's name got drug into this. Yes, DL's scores went up and Alaska's went down. Alaska learned mid year that their scores were slipping and started pulling the team together to focus on the prize. At that time, there was a five point difference between AS and DL. AS managed to pull it together and lift their scores to create a 10 point difference between the two. That's good, and if things continue as they are now, AS will probably see substantial increases in their 2016 scores as well. I was impressed by AA's increase. That is probably going to continue as well. AS needs to keep looking in their rearview mirror, and I would imagine that DL, in addition to just being pissed because they didn't get it again, is probably a little alarmed by how close AA is to them now as well.

As the others improve, as shown by the results, it forces Alaska down. There are only a certain number of votes, so as votes are given to other airlines, it effectively takes away votes from Alaska.

It's not that ASA is necessarily declining, it's that others are catching up and those votes are used elsewhere.

Actually, yes, the thread title is QUITE A BIT misleading. Distinguishing between "traditional" and "low-cost" carriers may have made sense a dozen years ago, but palpably does NOT matter in 2015, when domestically there are really only the "big 4" plus JetBlue, Alaska, Virgin, and Spirit. (I don't think Allegiant counts because of their business model, and Sun Country is too small to matter at this point.)

So of these eight American carriers with a national or semi-nationwide presence, Jetblue took first, Southwest 2nd, and Alaska 3rd. THAT is the relevant ranking. (Clarification: I'm using the "overall" ranking here, not the FFP ranking, because the continuing devaluation of FFP's clearly makes that ranking less important to the majority of travelers than the overall ranking.)

More nearly meaningless subjective awards and surveys that don't accurately convey an airline's performance or even type of business model. If B6 is an LCC, than AS undoubtedly is too. In fact AS is probably more of an LCC than B6.

If DL won the award would it be a "meaningless, subjective award or survey"? Probably not. In fact, in every DL press release they tout their "meaningless, subjective awards and surveys". If it was so meaningless and subjective DL wouldn't have made it a corporate goal to achieve it. Gheez, how about just congrats?

Most definately for me. None of these awards mean anything to me and I do not make my flying choices from them. I fly both. No major difference in my world.

My same sentiments too. AS (and to a certain extent WN) is so thinly represented in the eastern time zone and northeast that it would hardly factor into my purchase decisions.

I had a decent flight once on AS SEA-YVR, but I won't go out of my way to fly EWR-SEA-LAX just to enjoy the AS experience.

But nonetheless, good job AS and B6.

Absolutely. All are nearly or completely meaningless for a customer. The amount of fair, objective data in the airline is simply too small.

Having flown nearly every US carrier this past year (except Allegiant and Alaska), I can absolutely say jetBlue still stands head and shoulders above the rest. Southwest is always consistent, so they deserve credit, and Delta is by far the best of the 3 big legacies. Throw Alaska and VX in, because they're obviously doing it right, and you've got jetBlue, Alaska, Southwest, Delta, and Virgin America really kicking ass in the US. The rest are somewhere between "meh" and total crap.

Also credit to Spirit for being better than I thought they'd be! For what that's worth.

The criticism is that the survey takers (Wichita State University) take 15 DOT statistics and rank them in an order of their choosing...introducing bias into their 'scientific' ranking. They are the ones that chose whether denied boardings are more important than lost bags or on-time performance, etc. Read more:.

Huh.
Well, if you look at the full rankings, they're pretty consistent with my experience as a consumer. I like AS and WN, DL and AA are somewhere in the middle, and UA and F9 should be avoided whenever possible. I never use B6, but suspect I would have a decent experience if I did.

Thanks for that. I had no idea to be honest. In regards to your points, I can't say that I disagree with you. I don't know who makes a decision on what airline they'll buy a ticket on because someone won an award, but it does give Alaska some good press and, to those in the industry, it's a feather in Alaska's cap. It's nice to be recognized I guess.

Actually, in a previous post I acknowledged DL's jump and Alaska's fall backwards. AA did quite well too. Good for both DL and AA. I hope that the scores will motivate AS to do better and be better. My beef isn't with DL moving up 19 points. That's great. My beef is with globals southern style compliment. Bless his little heart. By the way, where is it that you had something good to say about Alaska keeping the award for another year? Good work yourself. Really.

Congrats to Alaska! Just flew them last week on a short SEA to GEG. The service was excellent, and the crews were wonderful. I could have flown DL, for $50 cheaper...... But..... It's a personal thing. Just proof that a lower fare doesn't necessarily mean a thing these days. Alaska is getting my support!

What an honor to keep getting these awards. Just proves, Alaska is a great airline. I finally overcame my unhappiness about them outsourcing SEA ramp. I couldn't hold the grudge forever. So, I gave the airline a chance. The flight I took to Hawaii was awesome too. The customer service and flight crews are great. Kudos Alaska!

What's truly amazing about these numbers is that DL is gaining on AS and is only 10 points behind while operating
roughly an amazing 162,000 flights a month carrying about 14.2 million passengers compared to Alaska operating
about 27,000 flights per month carrying roughly 2.5 million passengers. Amazing that Delta is doing so well and gaining
with those incredible numbers across their vast network.

Congrats to both AS and DL but especially DL and yes, here's to next year. I expect
DL to overtake AS in 2016.

For Delta, the "Alaska" issue is pretty much irrelevant once the strategic decision was made to organically grow our hub and feed there.

Face it, Delta is just not that much into Alaska anymore. So, as I see it on this blog, the 'Alaska/Delta" obsession has become way disproportionate.

Yes, it is a corporate goal to add the JD Power award to our trophy case. It gives us something to focus on and we are nearly there. Healthy competition in my book.
