BA B773 Diverted To HEL & Police Needed (Pic)

Thu May 14, 2015 9:47 pm

In the Thursday afternoon BA B773 (G-STBK) from PVG was diverted to HEL due to an unruly passenger. Several police officers were needed, it looks the passenger didn't want to co-operate. The local paper says the passenger was "intoxicated", the aircraft stayed 1,5h hours in HEL. Oh boy that became expensive...

How so? They probably just activated a spare for the next flight on that line if there was one.

Diversions costs $$$ and I hope BA sue the idiot for it. Pity it wasn't January and -20C , that would have sobered them up.

Please explain all the extra money that isn't accounted for in the airlines irregular ops recovery plans. (having spare aircraft and crew)

At least they diverted to an EU (or at least European Country. Not sure what Finland is) over some country like Russia or Iran. Can you imagine being arrested in Iran for getting drunk and being disruptive? I don't even want to know what the punishment would be.

Presumably HEL would charge a landing fee, additional fuel costs, and costs associated with any missed connections at LHR.

Finland is an EU country... Though not much difference if the aircraft had diverted to OSL. Finland's judical system has a reputation to be kind of soft so I guess the guy is lucky the pilot didn't choose Moscow...

I don't know what the guy did on the flight, if something more severe it's possible he (?) will be sent to a notorious Finnish open prison, yes the inmates have keys ,)

Was it a man or a woman? Looks like a woman from the picture. And in any case I understand that the aircraft was under British jurisdiction. Only beef Finland would have with her would be resisting a government official. As that would most likely be a day fine it would amount to much because she doesn't have any verifiable income. Reports say she is already on her way back to her home country after questioning.

I do wonder what the fireman (the bald guy) was doing there.

I like the guy standing behind the fireman...putting on rubber gloves for the impending and invasive search of the suspect...

BAs fault, is it? Jumping to conclusions awfully quick, aren't we, Judgy McJudgerson? What if she was asking for just coke or sprite from the cabin crew and adding her own alcohol that she bought from duty free? I have had passengers do that often - no matter how vigilant we are as cabin crew, if someone wants to sneak their own booze, they can and will and we don't know until it's often too late. Personally, I have #nosympathy for the passenger involved.

That's not the point. It is still expensive and that is all the original comment was [likely] trying to convey.

Excuse me? That is really a rush to judgment. 1) Nowdays people have much less interaction with gate agents, who, in the past have been the first line of defense against the boarding of already intoxicated passengers. 2) We have no idea if there was some kind of mental problem here. 3) Many people have the ability to mask intoxication longer than others. 4) There is no way that a cabin crewmember, observing obvious intoxication or increasing questionable behavior, would serve more. But the overriding factor here is we have no idea what his mental state was.

Upon arrival in Finland the suspect was freed and the other 299 passengers were arrested for not having the sufficient blood alcohol level

Yes the arrested person was she, said police. She had physically attacked the crew and didn't obey the orders. It must have been quite a show in the cabin, they were not that far from LHR anymore.

It is my understanding takeoffs and landings burn a lot of extra fuel, not to mention landing costs and other services incurred.

I understand that, but people on anet act like a diversion is something the airline even sees in their costs and profits the following quarter. It happens, it's whatever and everything will be fine.

Passengers often bring their own alcohol on board and consume it contrary to airline rules. It's hard for flight attendants to monitor that until a passenger becomes unruly or obviously intoxicated.

Agreed. However if the passenger was clearly intoxicated the airline would've denied the passenger boarding.

Hi, my name is EK413 & I'm an alcoholic.

If the passenger can't handle their alcohol it's not the airlines responsibility.
