New Internet Meme Themed DL Safety Video

Wed May 20, 2015 5:11 am

I personally think it's a little over the top, and it probably could stand to come with an explanation in Sky Magazine, since I'm sure the majority of the jokes will go right over most pax's heads. However, you have to give the DL marketing team points for creativity...

The shark, she is jumped.

That was just awful. I totally loved their 80s video (get it?!) and their holiday-themed one was nicely done as well. But this is just too jarring, random, and includes too many references that most passengers aren't going to get.

I can easily see crew members rolling their eyes while this video plays as opposed to smiling and laughing along with some of the others.

Even Mother Delta swings and misses sometimes, I suppose.

This has got to be the weirdest safety video since JS's one (skip to 2:00 for the propaganda highlight): "Welcome to Air Koryo's airplane of Juche oriented Korea vigorously advancing towards the Socialist powerful nation by the Songun politics of the Great Leader Kim Jong Il."

I'll give it an A+ for creative effort, and there was a lot of good stuff in there, but they absolutely lost me the moment that Harlem Shake music started playing. Nothing is worth that.

Cool, it looks like it was recorded on an A330 instead of the usual 777.

Honestly, I'm not really a fan of DL safety videos (except for the 80s one) but I did chuckle when they did the Harlem Shake and doge.

My only favorite bit was the Godzilla Cat on the Roomba. It is nice they still keep Deltalina around, especially when she wags "No Smoking".

Oh my that was a serious snoozefest... They are trying way to hard to be 'hip' and 'significant'. A majority of the pax wouldn't even recognize most of these memes/people/things. It's an awful blend; the boring facts of your regular flight safety movie combined with the internet hits which are absolutely the complete opposite. To me it doesn't work as the pace is way too slow to make it a 'snappy' movie with humour. There is an unbalanced mix between the heroes of viral videos, the memes and the youtube-stars. For someone that's part of the 9GAG-generation (sad but true), I can only shake my head in disbelief. Cringeworthy... Go big or go home if you'd like to be part of the internet culture Delta.

I really have a problem with Delta's safety movies. The first one that featured Deltalina had a serious 'camp factor', but nowadays they completely lost it. Perhaps it's the humour that's definitely not my cup of tea (the new AF video for example is much more ingenious and tongue-in-cheek/chic), but Delta is like the awkward uncle that tries to be cool during birthday parties. Delta; stop trying to make 'hip Delta safety videos' happen. It's not going to happen.

I mean, we're sitting here talking about an airline safety video. They've gotten millions of views on social media, and even replays on the likes of CNN. That almost never really happened before.

That was horrific. I'm 26 and missed half the references, my father and grandfather would have no idea. My step father platinum with QF would be completely turned off the brand by this safety demo, seems whilst it may generate YouTube views it could be counter productive to the broader brand.

I think they need to revamp their approach on these safety videos. It's just starting to get really old. Previous safety videos were OK, but if I'm a FF or FA on DL I could see how this will get really annoying after the second or third flight.

Harsh crowd. I think it's great and it's not like it'll be used forever. It's always fun when an large company is willing to have a bit of fun with something like this. It feels more human.

And you don't have to get the references to get the required information from the video.

If I had seen this about 2 years ago I would have found it appalling. But there has been a history of no one even looking up when the video is played or when the manual demo is done. So what airline gets the most media for something along these lines? WN of course. They are always showing f/a's rapping or singing or something off the wall. So I have to say that I completely understand what they are doing here. They are simply trying to appeal to those who are tech-savvy and won't listen or be captivated by anything short of this. Yes, it is disturbing to me that safety has taken a back seat to entertainment...very disturbing. But something like that seat moving when they didn't want to be next to the exit will stick in someone's head. Taxi out is one of the few times where, if there is an IFE system on board, you have their undivided attention since they can't use the laptops yet. So i can see both sides of it...slick..well made...childish...and seemingly flippant about safety.

Actually, this video made me wonder: is there often more than one type of life vest stocked aboard an aircraft? They always introduce them as though you could get different kinds.

I can't speak to other airlines, but HA does have infant life vests on the 767 and A330. Maybe 717 too but I can't recall

I would expect infant life vests on any flight that allows infants.

This was more like they purchased from two different vendors.

Okay I'm a Delta fan, my father flew for Delta for 39 years. But seriously, these people in Atlanta are making the worst decisions, IMHO. This is an airline, not an entertainment venue. The videos with a grandma sipping tea in turbulence and a guy in a neck brace looking behind him are fine and droll, but this?

As a legacy carrier, among the top 3 largest airlines in the world, Delta ought to be poising itself as a high-end airline, elegant, classy, comfortable; I think airlines in general should allude to 1960's Pan Am days as much as is possible, and people would like that. I know the world is changed, more people fly, and many flights are like cattle cars on a train, but they should work to make flying romantic and worthwhile, and that will take people's minds of TSA problems and the inconveniences they might find in air travel as much as this silliness.

This is simply childish. Yes, most people know the information, but it ought to remain serious. I liked Delta's new brand in 2007, but it wore off quickly. If the board of Delta or any major US carriers are looking for a new Chairman, I'd volunteer in exchange for free F/J airfare.

"Expecting" and what actually is a regulatory requirement are two different things. Maybe it is required, maybe it isn't; I don't know the specific rule if it even exists. What I didn't state outright, which is my fault, is that it's actually verbalized in Hawaiians safety demo.

I've flown many an airline and have never seen that. But it's entirely possibly different vests for different strokes are onboard. Who manufacters them is of no consequence; as long as the vest are properly inspected they are good to go

A coworker and I watched it today and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a lot hidden in there and I'm sure repeat viewing will result in more being noticed. Granted, we are both cat people so the opening kitty pianist and the roomba cat had me 100% interested from the get go.

I think unusual safety presentations are the wave of the future. If it gets people to pay attention I think it's fine. Between all the crazy stuff NZ has done (nudity, Betty White, Richard Simmons...) and DL's recently frequent refreshes I have to say I enjoy the variety and creativity.
