EK Sending B773s To BUD Starting Dec 1st

Thu May 21, 2015 12:36 am

EK is increasing capacity to Budapest starting December 1st. The A332 service which started in October is doing well, with 80% load factors. The 364 seat B773 is a significant increase and good news for BUD.

It looks like BUD is attracting carriers, TS,CA and GW are the latest long-haul additions to the former based of MA. BUD was without any long-haul or wide-body service for quite a long time. Any chance of AA or DL starting seasonal service?

The airport will also undergo an expansion in the coming years, with addition of new gates and perhaps a new cargo apron.

Great news, although I am booked on this flight in J in July so a little bit too late for me. I am still hopeful that on that day it will be subbed with an A380.....

Realistically, a 5.5 hour flight is much too long a flight to have the A330 on. They really need to get rid of the A330's as quickly as possible.

You do realize that you are talking about the 330 which just gets warm at 5.5hrs?!?! They are certainly designed to do much, much more...

This is 10 hours. All operated by A332.

What is the longest A330 flight? I flew from Bangkok to Domodedovo a few years ago on an A330 and I think it was about 12 hours.

SA operate the A332 JNB-LHR which is almost 5000nm IIRC... Probably not the longest, but not exactly short haul either an a high altitude departure airport too...

Of course if it is operated profitably I have no idea. Given its SAA I'd have to say no...

I flew SU A332 from SVO to HAV in 2010, pretty long flight at 5971 miles. Took around 13½ hours if I remember correctly.

Consider that the context could well be EK's J product on the A332, not the aircraft's technical capabilities. They try to relegate it to shorter or less premium markets for a reason.

I think it was quite clear that I was referring to the onboard product rather than the range, I am not an idiot.

The seats on EK's A330's could literally be donated to a museum.

Some people on this forum can be so pedantic.

QR and their A320 is no longer going to be very competitive on this route. I can't imagine flying 5.5 hours in a A320 in Economy class.

Don't know if for the moment demand warrants such service while there are other ways to get from here to there through the alliances' partners.

Even Canada only gets once weekly with a leisure airline. It's still better than nothing of course.

“We worked hard for years with our Canadian partners to start this new service. All the preliminary research shows there is real demand for this, both in the leisure and the business segment, and will soon lead to increase of frequencies.” says the airport's CEO.

Will it be more frequencies with TS or another airline? Will it be enough for the business segment or will these passengers still prefer non-leisure airlines?

No doubt, MA's flights to N. America were heavy on the transit pax. I can recall flighst to YYZ with 80 pax during the winter, while 80-90% load factors in the summer. The lack of an alliance partner in BUD would deter any legacy carriers from operating to BUD. Both DL and AA did fly to BUD during Malev's tenure, but DL didn't have onward connection capabilities after MA joined OW. DL's flights were short-lived.

I think Hungarians still perfer Wizz or Ryanair due to cost when flying within Europe, LCCs are the backbone of BUD at the moment.

DXB-WAW will get an upgrade too (77W instead of A332).

It seems that currently the only type of seat configuration used on EK 773s is 12F/42C/310Y. So the new service will offer twice as many premium seats. In fact, it may be the first time that First Class seats are available on a scheduled flight from BUD.

Okay then. I'm curious to see how TS flight will fare from BUD and if it will appeal to Hungarians.

Although it was never officially announced, DXB-WAW is already regularly flown with 77Ws for quite a while now, I think since the start of the summer season in March.

EDIT: Just saw that after weeks of 77Ws it's A332 again - seems not very stable. :/
