WN Adds New DCA And AUS

Fri May 22, 2015 1:53 am

WN added the following today:

DCA-MCO

Additional...
AUS-FLL

DCA-MCO, retaliation against B6 for their BWI adds?

(Edited out the old info... sorry about that!)

Looks like all of their other DCA flights are at the same frequencies. Where did they get the slot?

Wasn't there just a thread somewhere else about someone selling a DCA slot? Sun Country maybe? DL trade some DCA slots for gate time at DAL?

All of the AUS new markets and adds in existing markets were announced a week ago and noted on Southwest's summary of changes link in this blog posting

They were also discussed here at a.net

DCA-MCO starts 11/1, and seems to use the slot vacated by DCA-CAK. 1:20pm departure from MCO and 4:00pm departure from DCA with a -700. Their DCA-MCO flight sits directly on top of B6 flight 823, which is on an A320.

On 11/2, the DCA portfolio looks like:
-- AUS: 1
-- ATL: 6
-- MDW: 9
-- CMH: 2
-- DAL: 4
-- FLL: 1
-- HOU: 4
-- IND: 2
-- MCI: 2
-- MKE: 3
-- BNA: 3
-- MSY: 2
-- MCO: 1
-- STL: 3
-- TPA: 2

For a total of 45 flights.

I guess I meant that they're almost at the same time, 10/31 DCA-CAK is at 3:30pm and 11/1 DCA-MCO is at 4:00pm. Not clear on my part.

You do raise an interesting point however, as 44 has been the magic number. Where is the 45th coming from?

OK thanks. I knew there was a AUS-Florida destination that went from 1 daily to 2 daily on that summary of changes link and I was thinking it was FLL, but it was MCO. So now we get a 2nd daily to FLL. Is that 2nd flight just seasonal through the holidays?

Weekdays show DCA-MDW at 9 and DCA as a whole at 45. They must have acquired a slot from somewhere.

It's possible they're using the fourth DCA slot pair which VX picked up from AA but hasn't been using.

In my memory, AUS-FLL has always been 1/day. Could be seasonal, though. In the end, WN is launching or adding AUS to BOS/EWR/MCO/FLL from Nov, as well as SNA from July which are all B6 destinations or nearby. Interesting.

SEA-based pax prefer AS (schedule and loyalty) while WN schedule is a bit better for AUS-based passengers. AS once pulled out of AUS-SJC market as soon as WN enters. Hopefully both carriers peacefully survive this time.

WN gave back a Sunday only slot pair back to the DOT which was part of the last round of slot divestion from AA. I wonder if they were able to get the dot to allow them to make it a daily set?

Well I believe that it will be good for both carriers as SEA is an AS hub and AUS is a WN stronghold.

I look for WN to add flights out of AUS in the coming future as I seen in another thread that BA is upgrading a/c
from 787 to 772.

Maybe this is a good sign of solid future growth though in AUS fir WN down the road.

I'd be interested in learning the details of this deal. It doesn't make much sense to me that a carrier would get rid of a slot with a FAA reauthorization pending.

Interesting note, the new DCA-MCO is flight 5153. Looks like they're using flight numbers in the 5000s for scheduled flights.

WN starts their operational day now at 0500 local time and the last flights depart now between 2200-2245, in addition to the addition of used -700's and new -800's to the fleet. Before, 0600 was the earliest flight (starting 2 or 3 years ago their would be 0545 and 0550 flights out of the megacities), but now outstations are seeing flights as early as 0510. Fleet growth is supposed to be 5-6% this year so that's ~40 additional aircraft on the year.

According to airfleets.net, some of the used aircraft have come from:
N7830A -- JetTime
N7844A -- Aeromexico
N7826B -- China Eastern
N7827A -- China United
N7822A -- China Southern
N7825A -- WestJet
N7834A -- Aeromexico
N561WN -- Eastar
N568WN -- China Southern
N7820L -- China Eastern
N7821L -- WestJet
N7818L -- JetAirFly
N7817J -- Germania
N7816B -- Yakutia
N7815L -- Virgin Australia
N564WN -- Enerjet
N560WN -- Alaska Airlines
N7814B -- China Southern
N563WN -- LAN Columbia
N557WN -- Alaska Airlines
N562WN -- Alaska Airlines
N7813P -- China Southern
N7826B -- China Eastern

(I may have missed some, I went through the list looking for Boeing Customer codes that weren't either H4 (WN) or BD (FL).

A couple of routes have been cancelled or reduced, but It's mostly growth... that's why they are having a constant stream of first officer and upgrade classes going...

The constant stream of new hire and upgrade training are the FL pilots transitioning over. WN hasn't had an off the street new hire in over 6 months, and from what is being put out there won't be any until July/August. As for aircraft WN and FL on 12/01/14 had a combine fleet of 692 aircraft. On 1/1/15 this dropped to 659, due to the removal of the 717s. WN recently announced that they plan to be at 715 aircraft by 12/31/16. That is only a growth of 23 aircraft in two years so that is why I asked where the cuts are coming for these new flights.

You are exactly right, the transition of FL pilots has taken up the space in the training center, July is 35 days away and new pilots will be coming in off the street once again... That was a tough one to figure out.

I'd bet that AS will continue to do well on SEA-AUS-they are a lot larger than WN in SEA (the larger of the two cities) and will probably clinch a good deal of the corporate traffic on the route. I'm actually surprised that AS hasn't tried PDX-AUS in competition with WN...seems like a market they would do well in.
