Question About KFS And USA Jet Flight #'s

A few weeks ago, I saw a Kalitta Charters II flight (KFS) operating as KFS722. I also saw a USA Jet flight operating as JUS205. In the two respective fleets of these carriers, KFS has a B727 with tail N722CK, and JUS has a DC93 with tail N205US. Do these two carriers use three-number flight numbers that match the three numbers contained in the registrations of the particular aircraft operating the same flight?

No idea if it's adhered to all the time, but JUS205 is up right now, and is indeed being flown by N205US.

Believe it or not, that airframe, in early 2013 (last record I could find) only had 23,000 hours and 13,000 cycles. A spring chicken!

Yes. KFS, JUS, and IFL use the numbers in the registration as the flight number 99% of the time.

KFS DC9's and 727's use the tail number while at KFS 135 the Captain gets to pick their flight number when they upgrade.

JUS just got a pretty sharp looking 727 this week btw. JUS727 will be the flight number.

KFS a/c will be 720, 722, 724, 725(horses), 726&729 for the 727's and 915, 916&917 for the 9's. The 737-400 that's coming, well, I don't know what they picked, probably 734 or 737.

I would imagine they buy these birds for pennies on the dollar. Outright owning the metal has cost savings over leasing a new bird, or buying a newer plane I would imagine. Like buying an old car for $1200, instead of buying a new car for $18,000.00. Yeah, the older models cost more in terms of fuel, but the ability to buy parts for the cheap are probably another cost benefit. Perhaps this is why we saw a few cargo airlines operating DC-8's for so long.

Because when you look at what the newer options are to replace a DC-9 or 727, there is no way to be able to pay for the new airplane and still make money. I'm sure they all make good money on the type of flying they do, otherwise they wouldn't do it.

It's a really easy business plan. Someone calls, wants something moved. Has a timeframe and size and dimensions with city pairs. Airline gives quote, customer takes it or leaves it. The airline knows what it costs to operate the flight, tack on some money for profit and you can do very well. For the size they are, I know for a fact that they can make quite a lot of money when it's busy. When it's slow, all you have to do is pay salaries until it picks up again because you won the planes. We were picking up 727's for around $600k. You can make that back in about 7 average ad hoc trips, all gravy after that.
