First Airbus A380 With Special Livery

Mon May 25, 2015 1:15 pm

It's not the best photo (haven't found a better one yet) but it seems SQ has one of its A380s with a special livery:

Anyone know more about this?

At first I thought it was fake, but after seeing other pics. There's no denying it's real.

It took 8 years for this. Glad it has finally happened.

Emirates had A6-EEQ in a special Fifa livery, though that has since been removed.

They also painted up quite a few A380s in cricket world cup livery.

Oh my! That looks rather bold. Hope it looks good close up. I also hope that Qantas will one day paint an A380 in the Wunala Dreaming livery. Fingers crossed!

Quoting A388 (Reply 4):
think what 817Dreamliiner meant is that the SQ A380 special livery uses up a big part of the aircraft's fuselage whereas the EK A380's are smaller stickers that don't cover the A380 in the way the SQ A380 does.

Fair point.  Smile

That's for SG50 for sure ! Singapore celebrates its 50th anniversary as an independent nation this year. I'm sure SIA would come up with something. Looks awesome and can't wait to see high-res pics !

They hadn't made any special livery since the crah of one of the Tropical Megatops in Taipei.

I'm not convinced I like it from an aesthetics point of view, but it does make the notoriously stumpy A380 look more slender. However it's clearly a significant event, so I say well done to SQ on marking the occasion in the biggest way possible.

So this makes it the first SQ special livery since the tragic Tropical livery which I otherwise loved.
I did expect SQ would do something for Singapore's 50th anniversary as an independent nation- everything here is about that now! The celebrations between Aug 7 to 10 are going to be massive too I bet.

... But agreed that this looks way too simplistic. It is essentially the Singapore flag slapped onto a white fuselage. Would have expected something a little more creative

It isn't the islamic crescent and star you're thinking of.
In Singapore's flag the crescent symbolises a youthful nation on the ascendant, the five stars represent democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

Regarding the livery, if it's a sticker I sure hope that it's of better quality than the one Ryanair used a while back.

I'd have liked them to incorporate the skyline across the fuselage, similar to CX's old AWC 747, especially given how much real estate they have to play with.

Since they're using the flag I'd rather they not get to creative with it but it's definitely too simplistic. It looks incomplete. I'd have liked them to make the tail red and maybe change the colour of the kris to white - that could look tacky however.

It's gonna use for "flyover" on SG50 event
Then it'll be repainted to the original colours.

There's no pleasing you lot on A-net, is there ? For ages now you've been begging for a special livery on an A380, now there seems to be one and it's being generally dissed as being awful. But maybe this isn't the finished version.
However - do I recall SQ as quoting that they'll never do another special livery after the 744 in the Tropical Megatop scheme crashed at TPE ?

I still have some hope- that it may not be complete yet :P

I think any rendition of Singapore's flag against the SQ tail would be tough as SQ's colours are blue and golden while Singapore's flag is white and red.

If I'm not wrong only the state is allowed to use it so a commercial entity like SQ would not be but I would have liked the use of the Singapore State Crest best-
http://i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t612/charon8608/128524397.Ijc4Cqlh_zps4iallhdu.jpg

Otherwise some rendition of the Lion Head symbol would be good- this is the commercially used version of the Singapore crest-

Meh.. personally I don't like the idea of the Singapore skyline. People from all over first think of the Raffles Place skyline (or now Marina Bay skyline ) when they think of Singapore which overshadows Singapore's 700 years of highly diverse heritage and nature which covers the entire centre to northwsest of the island. I think I'd like symbols, maybe embedded onto a rich colourful piece of art to represent the diversity here. Something a little like what they did with the Tropical livery.

Indonesia may have the biggest population of Muslims but it is a highly diverse country with as much historical influence from Hinduism and Buddhism. Although there are pockets of conservative muslims in the region, most of the muslims around here are very different from the middle east. Especially in Indonesia, the muslims I know have a lot of influence from their native Indonesian practices which are pretty much pagan.

That's definitely for the 50 years anniversary of Singapore (or how they call it the "50th birthday")... They are doing all sorts of (some funny and some interesting)things this year.
Finally we have a special livery on the A380, and a proper one, I am not talking about some stickers or decals... YEAH!!!!!

But I have to agree, its to simplistic and not creative enough... well, the Singapore way...

Like I said earlier, it's just plain awful. Tacky tacky tacky and damaging to Singapore's classy, elegant, sophisticated image so previously carefully controlled and promoted.

It could've been so much better. Perhaps something a little more culturally diverse, reflecting all of Singapore's heritage... But then again, a flag is a unifying device, a rallying point, the national symbol above all others.

I just really wish SIA could've been a little more daring, bold with their planning for this...

Cheers,
Bunumuring.

PS: I am as equally underwhelmed with Qantas, Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia for their lack of 'attention' to the recent Anzac Day Centenary... So sad...

I won't be surprised to see this being a part of NDP (National Day Parade) on 9 Aug.

The livery is rather awful IMO. The contrast of dark blue tail and the red on the fuselage doesn't fit. The blue tail and 'Golden Pigeon' are probably too important that SQ were never going to put something different on the tail (recall the original SQ *A liveries with the SQ tail), but surely they could have found a better way to work around it.

You are probably part of a minority that likes this paint scheme and part of a smaller minority that considers SQ's main livery tired and badly tweaked! Personally I consider SQ's livery timeless and I would imagine it could be used for even the next 50 years without looking tired.

SQ's brand value comes from consistency (like in the service provided by their cabin crew) and that's what their patrons like. I find the consistency in their livery congruent with that.

It makes me cringe when people call it a golden goose, pigeon or any damn generic bird! It is a bird inspired by the handle of a keris. See http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Airlines under "Branding". I also read it in a book on the airline's history.

You'd think that after branding everything with the idea of a keris (KRISflyer, KRISworld Entertainment System, SilverKRIS Lounge etc) that people would make the connection but no, they call it a meaningless golden bird!   I presume you're local?

This is exactly why foreigners think we have no heritage.. most locals don't give two hoots about any of our icons and their history, SQ being one of a few of them. When I talk about the shophouses or local cafes in Duxton I usually would get weird stares from most of my fellow countrymen who otherwise only hang out at that big glassy mall beside their apartment block or Orchard, everything else is just seemingly inaccessible.. the only ones who'd patronise these local businesses like those are my foreign friends living here

I loved the original 1970s livery, now THAT was timeless. It was simpler and cleaner than the current mess, which I believe was designed by Landor (who also actually got paid for the warmed-over BA livery in the 80s). The font looks awkward on the fuselage (particularly on the A380 -- elegant it is not!), and what, exactly does the orange stripe on the tail bring to the design? It's just a distraction from the classic kris logo. It has 1980s stamped all over it.

Singapore needs a fresh, modern look and this special livery could form the basis of one. Just change the typeface and colours of the tail, with maybe a new interpretation of the kris logo, to fit in with the red, orange and white of the fuselage and you'd have one very smart, modern -- and original -- livery. It would stand out a mile.

Singapore Airlines have a world-class reputation, but that doesn't mean they have to stick to the same, tired old image. Any new look would quickly become associated with their high standard of service.

Come to think of it, if they don't use it, that red and orange swish over the top of the fuselage could be the basis for a new Iberia livery since they dropped their classic 70s one for the LCC look.

I actually like it too. Very refreshing and a welcome change. Too bad it apparently is for a very short period of time. Strong brand values do not mean outdated and plain ugly schemes.

Hi mate,
I totally agree with you. I have thought for years that the SIA livery has dated badly: timeless, it is not in my opinion. The use of blue and gold, plus the logo ARE timeless, but the font and orange stripe plus overall design of the livery look tired and old. A simple tweaking could make such a difference, a la Qantas, Air France, KLM... Or a slightly 'retro' flavor such as used by JAL for the crane and font (but not the eurowhite fuselage).

Cheers,
Bunumuring.

Thank you very much for your quick help.

I really hope this doesn't sound ungrateful - but someone "played" with the colours in this picture, correct? Of course I cannot comment on the special livery since I haven't seen it myself but from the FedEx 777 in the background it looks as if someone changed the settings, correct me if I am wrong.

But again, thank you for your quick support.

They hadn't made any special livery since the crah of one of the Tropical Megatops in Taipei.

For your info the official Singapore Airlines name for that colour scheme was Rainbow not Tropical. Not sure where Tropical started and why it has stuck to this day.

I agree that the colours look a bit off. Although not 100% sure, I believe the photo was originally uploaded to Instagram so has possibly had the setting played with, then someone has put it on Twitter, which reduces the quality and can distort the colours quite a bit.

Hopefully someone uploads a better photo to the database soon

Oh well, I hope SQ didn't pay the designer too much...
