US Airline With The Fewest Airbus

Sun May 31, 2015 4:23 am

My mother absolutely detests Airbus planes, often citing the rattling noise they make on turbulence. Unfortunately, dad's airline of preference is US Airways, which is almost all Airbus. So which of the big nationals has the most Boeing? Southwest doesn't count since they don't do coast to coast non stop.

And please, no arguing on Airbus. That argument is lost here.

Rrrrrrrrrright.

Delta has 57 A319s, 69 A320s and 33 A330s. Total: 159
--You can avoid the Bus fairly easily, especially domestically.

United has 55 A319s and 97 A320s. Total: 152
--You're a lot more likely to be on the 737

Are you asking this question for some other reason, such as what credit card to get? All three major US airlines have both. You should just look at the flight specifics before you book it, regardless of airline, to see what kind of plane you're getting on. It's not hard to avoid Airbuses. But I wonder if your mom would know she was on an Airbus without being told beforehand.

Southwest actually does a fair amount of transcon flying.

Luckily for them both, with the US/AA merger moving forward there has been some crossfleeting going on with Boeings and Airbus moving into markets that were previously dominated by one or the other. As this continues it'll be easier for your mother to avoid Airbus planes while still flying your father's preferred carrier (provided he sticks with them as the merger continues. That being said, the new AA is still going to be pretty Airbus-heavy.

Well the AA+US Airbus is absolutely gigantic, and is only getting larger. So as time goes on it'll be exceedingly difficult to avoid Busses on them, although the 737 fleet is also very large.

Honestly, my advice would simply be to tell your mother her reasoning is absurd and she should get over it, but that's just me.

Delta, while they have quite a few A319s and 320s, and have 321s on order, has such a diverse fleet overall that you'd easily be able to avoid Airbus in favor of 737s, 757s, 717s, and Mad Dogs.

United also has more 737s than Airbus narrowbodies, so they'd be easy too.

WN does a fair amount of trans con flying. And honestly, it depends on what station you live in. You need to look at flight specifics before hand. It doesn't really matter who has more of what, airlines place aircraft on routes they believe will meet said routes demand. Your really on your own.

Don't let her look at the details of the trip (such as aircraft type) next time you book a ticket. Then, if it's an A319/20/21, get into your row of seats before she does, and replace all the safety cards with ones you 'borrowed' from a previous 737 flight. Boom! Instant 737. She'll be none the wiser

Only book flights with Zero Turbulence, they are a little extra as they are last minute and you have to be flexible to travel when the weather dictates.  .

UA isn't exactly growing their domestic Airbus fleet in a big way (something about 1-2 dozen used ones).... Fairly easy to avoid it if you pay attention to routing choices

But it's rather odd someone would go out of their way and possibly pay hundreds more each time just to avoid a plane type

Not really, although she is not avoiding an aircraft type rather a whole OEM, which is a bit unusual. Quite a number of people, including me, will spend extra $A and take extra hours to avoid the B777 and even more to avoid a 10 abreast B777.

She's a perfect type of customer for the airline because she doesn't make purchase decisions by price or even scheduling convenience. If the only flight on Boeing is a mid-con red eye she'll be there.

Kind of funny that a few years ago UA had more Airbus' than AA/DL combined, who both had zero until their mergers. Now they have less than both.

And I find the A320 way quieter and comfortable than the guppy. Don't know why your mom wants to avoid it.

Airbus apparently has a special page about Airbus in the US - and there's a page detailing US users. Whichever airline is not on the list doesn't operate even a single Airbus aircraft.

Whats confusing about it? You may disagree but I do NOT like flying in the B777, they feel very unstable and less solid than the other aircraft I mentioned.

There's no difference in flying a 737 or A32S on a flight. The differences are entirely driven by airline product choices.

I don't know about the rattling but if it doesn't bend it's gonna break if she's really afraid something is coming apart. Everything big that I have flown makes some kind of noise, it's what they do. From flying them, the 319 rides worst in turbulence and the 321 is the best of the Airbus narrowbodies. The 320, just like it's length, is right in the middle and isn't that bad.

Shocking I have to say there are still people who won't fly anything other than Boeings however.

I can understand a bit of a preference from one kind of aircraft to another. My experience is limited to the 737 series (-200, -300 and -700 varieties, at that), so I can't say much for other types. But I'm more than willing to fly on just about anything, so long as the type and airline has a good safety record. Even some of the Russian fleets sound like an experience, to say the least. But to say that something else is inferior simply because it's bot built in the US is naive at best, bigoted at worst. Chances are a good bit of most Boeing aircraft are components built outside the US. God forbid it have CFM engines, they might have come from France!
