I believe IAD and BWI picked up some diversions despite being delayed as well. The storms aren't over so all three New York airports probably will continue to see some flights divert.

Per FR24. I saw UA941 - LHR-EWR, which is a 763, diverted to LGA... also some flights diverted to Teterboro as well

That seems very strange

Albany got four United planes on their way to LGA. It looks like an American A321 had to do a go around so they still aren't having much luck. It seems like airlines have cancelled much of the evening arrivals into NYC

Another round headed for the NY area now. Just been relentless today. Sitting on top of us and lined up behind that.

No hail or severe stuff...but heavy rain and flash flood alerts.

Nonetheless, for aviation it all means the same thing...ground stops, SWAP, and extensive delays for arrivals and departures.

I imagine airports are a mess now and will not recover tonight

Does LGA have customs?

No. Besides, according to flightaware, UA941 landed as planned at EWR.

Something tells me UA wouldn't send a flight from Europe to LGA anyways.

I've seen FR24 mistakenly list flights as "Diverted to LGA" a lot recently. I take it all with a grain of salt as I have yet to come across one that has turned out to be true.

The storm axed my ROC-BOS flight yesterday. The only way to get to Boston last night on AA was ROC-ORD-BOS. My 343 mile flight became 1395 miles on 2 flights!

Everything was nasty. But I made it, only ~4 hours late.

one of the greatest tools ever created for aviation (and those in the emergency management/public safety world) are the products of the NWS Severe storms lab and prediction center in Norman, Oklahoma. They offer up to eight days of guidance regarding the potential of severe weather. Granted, the accuracy is far higher the closer you get to the day of a severe weather event, but none-the-less their outlook is a pretty good tool for long range forecast threat detection.

In a situation like this can UA request to land in IAD instead of say BWI or will they get told where to land?

My flight yesterday CVG-IAH got canceled. Apparently the plane left the gate, but never took off. The crew's cut off time passed and they returned to gate. I had to take a CMH-IAH flight this morning!

When there is weather like what happened, the dispatcher puts an alternate airport on the flight plan. The dispatcher chooses an airport based on forecast weather, ability to handle the airplane, capacity, etc. Dispatchers usually try not to overwhelm one airport. UA had about 15 diversions yesterday evening. That many diverted planes would overwhelm even a hub like IAD. They got spread out to BWI, IAD, PHL, ALB, PIT, etc. The plane is not required to divert to the alternate on the flight plan, but usually that is where they go.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

The pilot in command makes the decision, likely in contact with the company who would have the bigger picture (i.e, go to IAD since there are spare crews, plane, rebooking facilities etc.).
