Doesnt LH and ANA have a JV to/from Japan? With LH's ownership in SN and the hub operation there, it doesnt really surprise why they choose BRU instead of other European cities, such as CPH/ARN.

Interesting. Last fall there was a rumor NH would be starting AMS, with this announcement I suppose that is off the table for the time being.

Expect a 788.

Most likely launched with 788. Another great example of how 787 is changing the long haul game.

Excellent news. Every time I use the B gates the flight to PEK with HU seems to be full to the gallows. Another direct connection to Asia is wonderful.

I think point to point, many Dutch people use BRU over AMS as it is simply closer to get there.

Yes, plenty of Dutch people use BRU (or DUS). However, I think price differences are the main reason, rather than proximity. Driving times to BRU (or DUS) are rarely much shorter than to AMS. And public transport times are definitely much shorter to AMS. Only for the province in the extreme southeast, Limburg, BRU or DUS is significantly closer. Having said that though, despite BRU being further away it is definitely not TOO far away to use.

Even though I live 20 min north of AMS I have recently flown to/from DUS and will be flying to/from BRU next month. Sometimes it can save significantly.
If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much.

However, the bulk of the Japanese community in The Netherlands (whci is bigger than those in Belgium, at least that's what I've heard) is living very close to AMS.

Enlighten me.
How does "adding just another LH spoke to a hub" equals "changing the long haul game"?

While I'm sure that new efficient Long Haul (LH) airframes will open up new routes (probably supported by natural traffic growth patterns), it's not like that new LH spokes were not opened previously by 767, A330, 772 etc.

ANA requested a pair of daily slots effective October 25. Aircraft is most likely the 787 as already written. Rumors of this new route have been floating for years. An announcement was made, then pulled within a few hours, more than a year ago already by ANA's office in Belgium.

An option for Japanese officials to fly for their duties/businesses in Brussels?

It is the case for THAI, government officials and AMS drama make it works for TG.

787 with lots of Business class seats I bet!!
Let's just blame it on yields.

LH group only partially owns SN. If it's a new route never flown before, then it's changing the game.

Same thing with DEN-NRT... In surface it merely sounds like JV hub to hub, but it would've not happened if the only thing available were 777s

True, but on top of governmental traffic, most major global companies also have their European headquarters in Brussels, and most major law firms also have an office in BRU.

Do not forget that SN has a daily flight to IAD as well.

SN has a seasonal (summer only) 5x weekly flight to IAD, they have a year round daily flight to JFK on top of the year round daily flight to EWR operated by UA.

Not yet sure what the future plans are, rumours are that 2x A330's will join the fleet but only one of those is an extra bird while the other will replace the oldest one (OO-SFM, C/N 30, currently the oldest active production A330 in the world). There were some rumours about expanding the AFI market but those same rumours are also floating about the TATL market so it remains to be seen if and when SN's fleet will expand.

And a year round daily flight to IAD operated by UA. I was pretty sure I saw an ad for a daily SN flight to IAD, but it must have been UA's.

You are correct, there's a year round UA operated flight between IAD and BRU, UA950/UA951 to be precise also marketed as SN8801/SN8802. And since they are both in the Atlantic++ JV you could indeed say that it is an UA operated SN flight. My bad

Ah OK. Now I understand.

Over the last couple of years, KLM opened several new long haul routes with A330 and/or 772 that were never flown before. So both the A330 and 772 are then also "changing the long haul game".

Seems that the term game changing is rather inflated. Good to know

That's correct. If a long haul route is now feasible when it's economically unviable before, it would count.

Or take KL's AMS-FUK. Now it's only 3x weekly. If KL had 788 today and can switch this route from 3x weekly 772 to daily 788, that would be game changing too.

Not mentioned before - what about potential Japan-Africa traffic? Or do the ME3+TK have that covered?

Yet it will go 2 weekly in W15 and remains 2 weekly when the 789 will operate the route. Yes, it's a 789 not a 788, but still smaller than the 772. Sometimes there is just not enough traffic on a route, 787 or not.

Very likely be related. Shifting half of CDG capacity to BRU.

Yes, most of them in Amstelveen, where some Japanese companies have their European headquarters (e.g. Canon), and where KLM is headquartered as well by the way.
