DL Starts B717 Service On The West Coast

I believe that DL's first B717 flight to LAX begins on June 3rd, followed by LAX-SFO-LAX service beginning June 4th. N910AT flies from SLC>LAX and then flies LAX>SFO>LAX, followed by LAX>LAS>LAX, followed by another LAX>SFO LAX turn. Are there any other B717 flights starting this week from LAX? It will be interesting to see how the loads are as the E175 carries 76 passengers vs the B717 which carries 110 passengers. Will DL be able to fill those extra 34 seats at certain times of the day?

I'm mixed on this. While I think it would be a nice touch to have mainline on routes like LAX-SFO, I don't think they'll be able to do both larger aircraft AND keep their very generous weekday frequency of hourly shuttle service.

(But it can be really crap on the weekends for the record - I've had those 3 hour layovers at LAX...)

Tomorrow, June 5th, I'm flying from ICN>DTW>LAX>SFO just to fly on the B717 for the first time! (I happen to live in the Bay Area!) Anyone else going to be on DL2752 dep 3.05pm?

There are eight round-trips per day utilizing the B717 from LAX>SFO>LAX starting on June 4th.

For the record, SEA-LAX is all mainline nowadays. Today there are six 738s and one 739 flying it.

Good news for DL & 717 / Mad Dog fans living on the West Coast

On my next trip to the US I will certainly check DL flights first if there is a chance I might get to try out the DL 717 as I often fly to, or connect through, places like LAX / SFO / SLC / LAS.

My last attempt to get on a DL 717 was when AUS-LAX was announced as going to be DL 717 metal, maybe about 2 years ago, but was then swapped from a 717 to another type before it started.

Weird world we are living in celebrating moving from E jets to a mainliner in 2015 when in the 70's I flew LAX-SFO on Western airlines B720, and PSA flew wide bodies !!! then on the 80's it was 727's, heck even in the 90's DL used to have a 734 shuttle....

Kidding, after flying from JFK-CGY via FRA, SIN and CEB (38 Hours!), I vowed to myself to try to get the shortest route as much as possible. Unfortunately, this was the only available award flight that didn't ask an insane about of FF miles.

I am flying LAS - LAX tomorrow (June 4th) on a 717.

I am hoping to see them on DL 4499 turns from SLC - ABQ and back, but that is a hope. I did see that SLC-ABQ was an A320 for a bit this spring, but seemed like a large jump from a CRJ9. It is back to CRJ9 next week.

DL never had the 737-400 in its fleet. I believe they ran the 1990s CA shuttle using the old Western -300s.

That's a pretty recent change, then -- I flew an E175 in both directions less than two weeks ago.

Starts on 9/1 and it is 2x 717, 2x cr7. I believe they also have some random turns for PHX-LAX for the 717 as well not sure if that is consistent or scattered though.

Except that there's about triple the number of daily flights, and flights are expected to sell 80% or more of their seats (vs. 50%-60% in the 1980s).

Nope.........no 737-400s in DL's fleet......must have been -300s.

Also, DL used to operate a Tristar LAX-SFO-LAX, but it was a non-rev special because DL was not allowed to haul local pax within California. This was back in the mid to late 70s, I believe.

Maybe in the 1970s but in the late 1980s and early 1990s, DL, UA, and US all had hourly flights I can't remember what frequencies AA had, especially after purchasing AirCal who flew heavily from SNA-SFO at least. All of these shuttle flights were operated with a 737 or larger. United would bring in the 747 during IRROPs too (it wouldn't surprise me if they still do)

In the 1990s DL flew an L10 on the shorter LAX-SAN route and since it was post deregulation they could sell it obviously. It was primarily intended as a thru flight and would therefore fly with a ton of empty seats.

It would surprise me if in the days of Western if they did not offer full meal service in Coach too, and on routes shorter than LAX-PDX.

Why aren't they basing them out of SLC (I thought that was the West Coast MX base for most types at DL...)? I could also see them revitalizing SLC flying to smaller destinations if DL tried that...how's the hot and high performance on the 717?

DL has a 900-mile rule and time of day qualifiers for F meal service; a few competitive/premium routes do better.

I moved to SFO in 1977. At that time DL had a DC8-61 SFO-LAX with standby fares as low as $13. What a zoo!.

For the summer schedule DL has an Airbus RON in ABQ for the SLC turn. The other two daily's tend to be RJ's.

That's complicated.... for the next couple weeks while there are only 5 ships out on the West Coast, expect one or two a week to swap out for the East Coast. It will get a lot more complicated as we continue to add 717 routes out West.
