AA To Make Important Announcement On 6-9-15

Today at IATA AGM in Miami, it has been said that American CEO, Doug Parker, will be making an important announcement tomorrow.

I'm excited!

Any ideas on what it may be?

Without being a total pessimist, such announcements of an important announcement usually turns out to be a change in font of the inflight magazine or a new colour of boarding card!

They are scrapping Boeing all together and are going for Airbus. Consequently, the airline will no longer be called American Airlines, but will from now on be called European Airlines.

Route wise, it would be nice to see MIA-JNB (with an extension to CPT!!) and LAX-AKL/SYD. Its time a US carrier reentered NZ, IMHO.

What could it be? Let's speculate.

- An order for 777-8X/9X from Boeing.

- Lower the mileage requirement for free domestic ticket from 25000 to 20000 outside of peak travel times.

- Donate one MD-80 to the CR Smith Museum in DFW.

- Expansion in Africa: CPT, JNB, NBO and DKR being among the destinations considered.

- MIA-TLV nonstop with 789 equipment 2x daily (or at least 12x weekly).

If so, using AA metal would be the best plan. New Zealanders did not take to Australian metal to the U.S. mainland, and QF ceased this operation some years ago.

An announcement of multiple new routes would definitely be interesting!

Possibilities may include MIA-NRT, MIA-TLV, MIA-JNB, MIA-CPT, DFW-AKL, LAX-AKL, LAX-SYD, LAX-MEL.

Don't they have these mileage promotions with Citibank co-branded cardholders already ? This might be a net-negative as they'll raise prices at peak times to offset any reduction here. Look at what DL has done.

2x daily from get-go is a bit aggressive, but this makes a lot of sense to start with single-daily 787.

I would probably faint if they announced NBO, but given the weakness of Kenya tourism its probably not going to happen. Just look at all the problems KQ is having.

CPT could be a tag onto JNB. I think ACC would be a more viable option compared to DKR.

I totally forgot about that possibility. I would like to see it, but lets get those African routes first. It would be awesome to see JNB and TLV announced tomorrow.

But even El Al and their very strong loyalty within the Jewish/Israeli communities couldn't get it to work (but then again, their hard product is not competitive either)

I always thought the links to TLV are primarily out of NYC, while the SoFL diaspora are mostly transplants from the northeast with fewer links to the "homeland".

Parker has commented in several interviews over the weekend American wants to grow Asia. Given he was just in China, my guess is LAX-PEK.
Of course I will be slightly disappointed.

You speak of that as if its written on a stone tablet. I've never read where the ACC will absolutely forbid AA from flying to Australia under a JV with QF. Only that the JV will have to be reviewed should AA request permission to fly there. Given that UA, HA, NZ, and the DL+VA alliance all carry US-Australia traffic , it will be hard to justify denying AA's request.
