If so, using AA metal would be the best plan. New Zealanders did not take to Australian metal to the U.S. mainland, and QF ceased this operation some years ago.

Considering if that were to happen it would probably be on American plastic, not metal, isn't it about time for that use of "metal" to go away?

I wouldn't call PHX-LHR "significant" since it already exists in the JV framework ... Placing AA metal is just shuffling deck chairs

JNB/TLV would be truly significant.

Who said it was going to be a route announcement? I suspect it may be announcing a significant new member of One World. A new member of the domestic variety.

Then why would AA be making the announcement? Wouldn't the new airline want to announce it themselves?

A few insiders have mentioned on here to prepare for a new long haul route to be announced.

AA's Asia strategy, and the financials involved, are a huge mystery to me. I have no insider info on that. But they are borderline desperate to do Asia big. 787 will help.

MIA-TLV would be big, but not significant since AA already flies there via PHL. JNB would be significant as it would be AA's first African route ever, and would finally bring AA into the 5-Continent Club.

I have to ask, is MIA-NRT a good idea, given how Japanese economy is slowing down? Or is MIA-NRT about connections?

Apologies, as I am clueless to the MIA/Carribean market.

Perhaps its a change of their paint scheme on the aircraft. Certainly something modern with bold colors....

Bonus if they also announce matching uniforms...

Hmmm... another possibility: "Green" Aircraft with (some) solar cells mounted to the top of the aircraft. Enough to operate the crews cellphones.... (which would not weigh that much or impact lift).

People will be issued green colored boarding passes for airplanes so equipped.

Perhaps a combination of a new paint scheme and the solar cells to really have a Green aircraft...

Have a great day,

Quoting jetblue1965 (Reply 33):
So you're basically saying .... LAX-PEK ?

Meh. This is expected and not incredibly significant.

Quoting TUSAA (Reply 45):
Either LAX-PEK or PHX-LHR. Kirby stated in a recent PHX town hall meeting that PHX-LHR is coming and AA recently purchased LHR slots for it.

So would this be in addition to the BA flight? How much capacity does PHX really need? Also, how would this flight work... A scissor route, a new long-haul international base, what kind of aircraft?
I'm not complaining, I'm critiquing...

Indeed. If - perhaps big if - this truly is a meaningful announcement regarding one or multiple longhaul route/s, I personally think a few realistic, possible candidates given reportage in recent months might be:

- LAX-AKL
- LAX-ICN
- LAX-PEK
- MIA-JNB

Quoting TUSAA (Reply 32):
Parker was recently in China talking with government officials about another new route and getting a good slot for the new flight. Im 99.9% sure it involves LAX.

I agree it seems quite possible that this might involve LAX, and I agree that if it does involve LAX, PEK is one plausible possibility.

From an aviation enthusiast point of view, LAX-AKL and MIA-JNB would be the most exciting options, since AA would enter the 6 continent club.

However,

From a business point of view, the most exciting options would be, IMO, LAX-ICN/PEK/HKG. That would mean that the new AA: 1) is willing to compete to become not only the domestic dominant carrier at LAX, but also international; 2) is willing to become a strong and significant player in the US - Asia market; 3) is willing to compete in markets and routes where there is not a JV partner and the competition is fierce.

Quoting osubuckeyes (Reply 55):
LAX-ICN/PEK/HKG/PVG, additional LAX-NRT, MIA-NRT.

AA already flies LAX-PVG.

How about a major expansion to Brazil? Part of AA's strategy in Brazil has been to expand when the market turns south and competitors cut service.

Add ORD-GRU, MIA-FOR, MIA-BEL MIA-NAT, MCO-GRU, JFK-CNF, JFK-BSB and increase connections at BSB in coordination with TAM and upgauge MIA-BSB.

- MIA-JNB

I would also add to that list that it doesn't seem entirely outside the realm of possibility that AA could at some point announce additional service to TLV - almost certainly from JFK and/or MIA - but I concur with the general assessment of many others that if, indeed, an announcement tomorrow is to be made regarding longhaul, it seems more likely that it would involve Asia, and LAX-Asia in particular.

It seems unlikely given the present macroeconomic climate in Brazil. Nonetheless, I do think MIA-FOR could work for AA with 3-4x weekly 757s.

FWIW Kirby has been talking about operating alongside BA on PHX-LHR for at least the last 5 years. I distinctly remember his comments from a couple of Town Hall/Crew News sessions; he seemed to think that the market was big enough for both airlines to exist.

If the above details are correct, perhaps AA will take over JFK-LAX-SYD route from QF? I'm not really familiar with AA's historical ties to Australia. AA would also be able to carry pax on the JFK-LAX leg so perhaps this fits the criteria above.

I don't see NAN being an option. Other than FJ, only KE flies long haul to NAN. AA isn't exactly overflowing with long-haul planes so why send it to a long haul leisure destination?

Out of left field, could it be STL-LHR? AA used to fly STL-LGW after the TW takeover.

AA To Make Important Announcement On 6-9-15

Tue Jun 09, 2015 2:23 am

This is unlikely, but I have a feeling it's going to be JL 788 to DFW with a joint-venture with AA.

Reason for this speculation:

- Rumors have developed for the past few months regarding JL making contracts with DFW ground services
- Since 2014, AA has opened up DFW-PEK, DFW-PVG, and DFW-HKG. These have produced good F and J load factors with AAdvantage Plats and Exec Plats.
- AA has flown x14 weekly (x2 daily) DFW-NRT for many years, all with 85-95%+ load factors. Many of these passengers are connecting on JL in NRT. However, due to the new cities being operated, it's reasonable to assume that load factors for connecting passengers to China have dropped now that non-stops are available.
- AA, as a result, cannot fill both daily 772's to NRT as they once did. They must put an equally capable aircraft w/ less capacity to fit the demand. The natural fit for this is the 788, but AA has only 5-6 of these frames and plans to operate them DFW-PEK, DFW-EZE, and ORD-NRT. The delayed deliveries implies they have no new plans to this strategy.
- JL, however, has many 788's that they are quite happy with and have perfected the use of them on routes which would have previously been likely unprofitable. DFW was a failed experiment between 1999-2001 for them (pre-joint venture and Oneworld alliance partnership).
- AA has the evidence that JL can fly a 788 on NRT-DFW-NRT and fill the seats with AA passengers thanks to shared FF programs and alliance benefits.

Thoughts on this theory?

Mostly logical, but I thought it's supoosed to be a new route for AA, not for JL. UNLESS .... It's DFW-HND in which AA does 3x weekly and JL does 4x weekly ? But AA has served Tokyo for so long it fails the second criteria he mentioned

And when he said AA served briefly before, he's talking about just PMAA or both AA and U.S. ?

AA joining QF in LAX-SYD may partially make sense - it satisfies all 3 criteria.

That would probably be the least risky move of anything on this thread. I have doubts they'd use the same aircraft (77W) all the way to JFK though--they have the outstanding 321T product on LAX-JFK.
