WestJet #1777 SFO-YVR diverted to PDX today (June 8, 2015)
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/W...7/history/20150608/1500Z/KSFO/KPDX

It appears WestJet flew in a replacement a/c from YYC to finish the YVR flight:
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/WJA8977

WestJet is certainly an airline that doesn't often make an appearance in Portland. Although I'm crossing my fingers PDX may see them or WestJet Encore some day.

Anyone have any additional info on the diversion. I'm suspecting a mechanical based on the a/c ferried in from YYC.

You can see the original 1950's Terrazzo floors at PDX right now. A huge section in front of Beaches. I like it better then the carpet, and it brightens up the terminal.

I think tile/terrazzo/hard surfaces are much better in places like airports. More beautiful, and much easier to keep clean. Think of the filth that lies concealed in the carpet in a place like a terminal. Yuck.

MCI has some really nice floors... maybe one of the best things about that airport.

I think so too. They should use a combo of tile and carpet. Not sure I like the new carpet. It's a little loud. Reminds me of LAS, not PDX.

I am surprised that WS hasn't started PDX, SEA I can see why they have not, but PDX needs a year round non-stop to YYC, IMO. I'd love it one stop to YYZ or YEG. Somewhere here on A.net I saw a picture of a WS meeting & there was a route map posted up on the wall & it showed PDX as a proposed new service city, IMO it's a great time to add PDX to your route map, thinks several airlines.

Fantastic, I wasn't around back in the 50's but I can still remember seeing pictures in the airport when PDX was much smaller & I remember no carpet pics. When I was a younger man I worked for beaches bar tending weekends & holidays in Vancouver. I'll have to go out to the airport this week & check things out & have lunch.

Interesting highlights

" Simonds said PDX officials would love to attract nonstop service to any major Florida destination, especially Orlando. Other top destinations that lack nonstop service from PDX are Nashville and Indianapolis, she said."

On the air freight side, the port would like to attract a carrier offering direct service to Asia to carry Northwest agricultural products, especially berries and other fresh products, Simonds said.

Airport Status changes from Medium size airport to Large.....

Along with the launch of new n/s flights on Condor from PDX-FRA we have another international addition today. Air Canada/Air Canada Express operates seasonal flights from PDX-YYC, flights usually begin in May and operate thru October. Today (06-19-2015), Air Canada flight 8318 comes on-line, offering a 2nd daily YYC flight.

Last I was online, the fares were about $99 each way during the entire summer. Of course there are dates that are sold out of that rate, but it one is flexible, one can get between the two cities easily & inexpensively, with some good B6 service. Well at least I hope! My first Y trip in a years, but I hear B6 has good legroom in Y.

Yes, I too noticed the $99 fares, however the small sampling of dates that I looked at, the PDX-ANC leg was a bit more expensive. Plenty of $99 ANC-PDX fares though. Great time to fly between PDX & ANC if one so desires!

Thank you for the map. I remember so many of these routes back in Air Oregon days in late 70's and early 80's flew many of them old bank runs.

I need to also say that I enjoy reading the Oregon thread.

I am spending an extended period (about 3 months) in Nepal helping with earthquake relief. This thread keeps me back in touch with Oregon and Washington. Here on my own, grass roots helping

'Although I'm crossing my fingers PDX may see them or WestJet Encore some day"

How about PDX - GEG - YYC - GEG - PDX ?
Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

Thank you for that contribution of your time & energy, I have a close friend who is from Nepal, She has been trying to get her 16 y/o Daughter here to the USA, She is leaving here in two weeks to head to Nepal herself & go to where her family village is. Another record month for MFR...

Out of the few commercial airports still offering service in Oregon, it's nice to see another besides PDX doing so well. I do wish the same fate would befall EUG & RDM, but I suppose once the Central Oregon economy rebounds & the snow returns to the Cascades we'll see an uptick in travel to / from the area & EUG doesn't have a Hawaii link any longer & Envoy is cutting back LAX to zerpo from RDM & 1.8 weekly to EUG, off season.

Almost the entire season for B6 on the PDX-ANC route are $79 o/w fares PDX-ANC & $78 fares ANC-PDX. Things keep getting better for this trip we're taking, we also got a great deal on the McKinley Princess Lodge for a two night package. Still wondering where o stay in FAI & ANC.

At what point do airports such as MFR, EUG or RDM become serious considerations for DL service to SEA? As of this posting I learned that SEA-BIL will soon be served by DL with a daily flight. Other Pacific NW airports such as PSC, GEG & BOI have all seen recent service additions with DL flights to SEA. I have to believe that an airport such as MFR would welcome an addtional option to SEA; certainly while they are experiencing a record number of passengers to date.

That's about it. I was just watching KGW 8 news & I see Travel & Leisure magazine is stating what many of us already know, PDX is rated the #1 domestic airport, nothing about the metrics used to determine this but it's true.  http://www.travelandleisure.com/worlds-best/airports#domestic

While it seems every magazine and newspaper has a survey like this and none disclose their metrics.

It is nice to see PDX recognized again!!!! Great airport!!

(much better than Kathmandu will take pictures when I return )

Fantastic news for MFR! But the article also states EUG is starting service on Southwest to Dallas and 5 flights a week on Hainan to Beijing?!?!

Has anyone emailed the guy who wrote the MFR article advising him (that at last check) EUG isn't on HU's or WN's route map? Contact info is at the bottom of the article.

Love the Oregon thread...been following since the beginning.

I am/have started a WordPress site dedicated to Oregon Aviation. Know it or not, Oregon has a very diverse aviation scene, and is very important to the economy of the state.

Would love to have contributors join (photography skills a plus) to help make it a reputable aviation news site in and for Oregon. I'm in Portland, but want to cover the entire state from central, east, south, coastal, and Willamette Valley contributors.

flyoregon.wordpress.com

On a related note, It seems Condor and Icelandair are doing decent in their infancy out of Portland. A few inquiries to the airlines haven't given me solid answers, but loads seems to be doing well. It's awesome to see some colors at the end of "D", especially on Friday's as the two flight prep to depart. Now if we could only get some daylight Volaris flights...!

What he described was SJC's new service. He got hold of the announcement by SJC for the SJC-EUG flight and was too incompetent to realize it was about SJC, not EUG.

For any one here in our Oregon thread that is a history buff, I have compiled a map of all the non-stop routes that have been flown commercially within the State of Oregon as far back as the 50's & 60's. If you're interested here it is:

Thanks for the effort. Interesting to see how things have changed. I remember flying Pacific Express from SFO to Redding to Medford to RDM. And the yellow banana had routes like that, too, with several stops within Oregon (and Washington and California, too).

One of my favorite ways to kill half a day way flying PDX-RDM-LMT-RDD-SFO on the DC-9-10's they used for years on that run, IIRC CIC was part of that at one time as well.

Thanks for the effort. Interesting to see how things have changed.

I'm glad you appreciated it, it was mostly for me, but I thought a few people in this thread may enjoy some historic aviation facts, and as you so kindly put it, Oregon does have a very historic & proud aviation history, I have spent the better part of my adult life researching & flying Oregon aviation routes.

I have also compiled a list of all Oregon cites that have received commercial service in the last 50 years or so, I have included their IATA codes & the listing of all non-stop cities served from that particular Oregon city, I used my personal OAG & timetable collection & multiple online sources as well to compile my information.

I will admit there is potential for holes & I guess my next step is to publish that list here & ask for knowledgeable input on missing routes that I am missing. I'd be interested in doing the same thing for Washington after I finalize Oregon.

In fact I'm going to put the list here, If you are an old timer like me or have a good amount of knowledge stored up, please take the time to review my list, I welcome any additions that are known ailine routes into any Oregon city or between Oregon cities. I'm sorry the list is long, the airline codes for some airlines are not correct, I had to guess at a few & there is an index at the bottom.

For some reason A.net has inputted this throughout my otherwise well done list: AS Fluggeselischaft mbH"> Anywhere that you see this, it's invisible & should be looked over, past, through or forgiven, dropped from your consideration.

I apologize for the inconvieninece & hope that you all enjoy the list for what it is. Thanks!

That is just an incredibly cool list. Thanks for doing that.

A few comments:

I didn't know that QX served LMT-SFO. Is that right? However, I think UA served LMT-SFO for a brief time with 732s. There was some controversy over this on a different thread however, but we found a news release on it.

I believe Pacific Northern also served SEA-PDX. According to one of their timetables, they had a tag-on to their SEA-Alaska flights with a Constellation.

Wow, amazing list, great effort and thanks!

You can add AS PDX-DEN.

I don't remember PDX to either OKC or Wichita on CO, must have been before my time.

MEM to PDX on NW? Must have been short lived.

Thanks again!

I understand your comment, but I partially disagree. For one, I get so tired of the incredibly poor quality of media coverage of transportation, and really, almost anything. Most reporters never even bother to do a simple fact check. Anyone who thinks that there is non-stop service from Eugene to Beijing is really clueless. How long would it take to verify your facts? Don Phillips mentions this a lot in his Trains Magazine column, how incredibly inaccurate most transportation reporting is.

You know, if I ever did my job half as sloppy as the man who write the MFR article did, I'd be fired in a second. This man receives a pay check to work and apparently does it very sloppy and inaccurately.
