I'm a bit surprised at LAX-SYD, and disappointed it's not quite as outside the box as some of the other rumors that were floated around such as MIA-South Africa/Japan, a return to India or Taiwan, some other unique longhaul destination like a DFW/ORD/LAX-CAN or PHL-AMM, or a new route spurred by a new alliance partner like PHL-CMN. Alas, as an AA FFer I guess I'm stuck bowing down to the power of the almighty LHR for most things.

Neither AA nor US ever seems to color outside the lines as much as DL does, and AA's cornerstone strategy always struck me as exceedingly risk averse.

QF will operate go from 2 daily (1 A388 and 1 744) to daily A380 and 3 weekly 744 on SYD-LAX

Just curious, not that this would ever happen but would AA be able to do a wet lease on the QF 744 JFK-LAX with their crews and pilots and sell it JFK-LAX. I would love to be able to fly that and it goes out with a ton of empty seats everyday. Except for the J cabin, the 32T is a disappointment IMO.

Ugh..... Not very exciting to me at all. Even having roots in Texas I've just found this announcement to be quite boring. Another US carrier to SYD. Last year I specifically chose and flew on AAs new 777 to LHR and found the overall experience to be less then positive so hearing about the news just wasn't very exciting. It would have been more exciting maybe using the B787 I think. Or even better maybe they should have leased a Qantas 747 and painted it up in their new colours.....now that would have been cool.....

Are you kidding? The purpose of the press conference isn't to surprise people its to tell the most target customers possible about a new offering. By tweeting the picture you get an entire continent of people interested in an AA press conference who otherwise would have had zero interest.

Why would you backtrack and add almost 10 hours to an already really long flight when you can take Fiji instead, they even sometimes offer free NAN stopovers, at least for fares originating the US.

The exciting part is watching AA's LAX hub grow. If AA can manage AKL, ICN, HKG, and PEK, they will have the most comprehensive route network from LAX.

Yeah good point. The last time I looked at this option it was only minimally cheaper with a not very convenient connection. I may look again. The last couple of times I've gone QF via SYD, which as you say has added some travel time; but is cheaper, better aircraft, better service and I'm getting something which I consider to be appropriate value for money.
