Absolutely gorgeous airliner performing like a fighter. The proportions are better than the -8.

I don't try to use bad language, but that one bad a%% plane. Most people on A-net , knows that I do not favor mid size twins, but I make an exception for the 787 and A350, because they are truly state of the art.

The 789 in Vietnam colors may just be the most gorgeous AC out there...short of any 752W of course!

If this is a sample of the flying demo at the PAS, I feel one hell of a cough coming on. A cough so bad that the only meds powerful enough to combat this sickness could only be found in Paris-Le Bourget. JEEEEZZZUS that was awesome!!!

Here is the one where they were practicing for Farnborough (last year). I personally think its more professionally done (Wolff I think). Over 4 million hits:

Quoting holzmann (Reply 3):
Didn't they do this already?

They were told after the first day at Farnborough that it violated their safety policy because the wing tip came too close to the ground so they suspended that part.

Both of these are done at MWH airport not yet in Europe.

That involved a steep vertical climb combined with a sharp right-hand turn just after performing a touch-and-go.

Yup. In the 2014 video, you can actually see how the plane flies (in motion). In the new one, you get a lot of beautiful slightly moving photographs.

Pretty amazing video... but I agree with the poster above that there is some perspective-shifting camera work going on here.

Having said that, I love the Dreamliner in the Vietnam colourscheme. What a great combination!

Congratulations to Boeing and Vietnam Airlines for the video. The plane looks great, the maneuvers look amazing and it restores 'gloss' to the program! I hope that PAS2015 will be an awesome show for the Dreamliner, both in terms of display flying and sales!

Cheers,
Bunumuring.

I got goose flesh. I agree re the angle. It may not have been as dramatic but a side shot from a little distance would still have been very impressive.
But those wings!!! Gorgeous. Is man finally learning from nature?

Right, I mentioned that. At least one of your photos is not from the video or even Moses Lakes, its the actual Farborough air show flight on the first day I believe. Still very cool to see. I can see why the airport was nervous. We don't see that move in this practice video so it looks like they will behave.

Breathtaking stunts - Kudos to Boeing for making such a incredible airplane.

Two questions:

a) If I understand correctly B787 in the video is meant for Vietnam airlines. Then whose pilots were performing the stunts - Boeing's or Vietnam airlines' pilots ?

b) Also I were Vietnam airlines, I would be somewhat hesitant to buy a plane that has undergone such extreme maneuvers and resulting stresses to the wings, fuselage and other systems. These maneuvers would be equivalent to a 3-4 regular "cycles", I would think. It would be like a buying a brand new car and letting the dealership drag-race it a few times before taking delivery. Would Vietnam airlines get a discount for buying an airplane with a few "miles" on it ?

Thank you very much for your answers.

They are Boeing test pilots, it says so in the article...

Well, VN would probably have to allow them to use it in the airshow and would know what they are getting into. I doubt it has any serious implications to the air frame, otherwise they wouldn't do it at all. I mean even QR letting Boeing fly there 787s like that at a previous airshow...

And certainly one of two specific test pilots at that. Randy Neville.

Quoting Gopal (Reply 27):

First off these planes are designed to handle many more Gs then they will ever see in real life and while this flight may appear extreme relative to a normal commercial flight, the number of Gs pulled on these maneuvers are less than you think. Virtually no impact on the airplane.

That being said, why would VN agree? Because its fantastic publicity for the airline. The previous test video had over 4 million views and this one is making the rounds as well. Then to be at the PAS which will attract a ton more eyeballs - any expense that they do incur (virtually none is my guess) is more than made up for in very valuable marketing of their brand. I am sure they were ecstatic.

Quoting Revelation (Reply 26):

Yes you can. Thanks for pointing it out.

3-4 cycles is a laughably small amount for a commercial airline.

Thank you very much for your answers. I guess that makes sense - the amount of G forces experienced by an airliner with no passenger load and also lower amount of fuel would not be enough to cause damage to the airframe and systems.

Let's be honest here. It is the angle that makes it look it is practically vertical. There are a bunch of pictures here from LAX showing a 747 doing the same thing

Fox "News" makes it sound like it is a 90 degree takeoff.

How in the world did it take off in such a short amount of runway AND a steep angle?

Easy. The aircraft isn't carrying any significant payload and if they are using full take off thrust they can reach takeoff speed in a much shorter distance. Same for the Climb angle.

Any ideas on the camera platform? Seems static and super stable - anyone else thinking drone cam?

That's still pretty darn steep. There's a person at the far left at 0:47, and the plane seems to be quite align with the body, hence close to vertical.

Also, I have an erection now.
