What an outside of the box type of route..I could see a seasonal flight couple of times a week from an east coast airport.

Sounds like they've taken a leaf from the FR book of PR. They also suggested launching flights to the US from AAL, which I'd have a hard time believing, unless we're talking weekly charters or the like.

Could a route between Tromsø and the US be done on a Boeing 737-8 Max ?

TOS-JFK is 3689mi and the MAX range is 3620mi. So probably not without penalties.

Absolutely ridiculous idea. Assume DY is trying to get some massive support from Tromso in order to start US route which of course has to be to JFK if at all. They fly weekly Bergen-NYC and not doing too well, at least capacity not increasing. So Stavanger or Trondheim should be first of course before Tromso. Those cities have 6x times the Tromso population or so

Really? Tromso? I've beaten up the pattern there and there is NOTHING that says "tourism" for US pax.

This has "Fail" written all over it.

Mountains, fjords, cruises, and Northern Lights - I beg to differ

I think this route COULD work, but would probably require a codeshare partner on the US side and a lot of advertising

There are quite a lot of tourists heading to Northern Norway....lots of "unusual" tourism up there. AY have been stopping in at Rovaniemi Airport in northern Finland on flights back from Asia (mostly Japan I think) on and off for years, so DY wouldn't be the first to offer longhual links to the Arctic Circle.

TOS is also the launching point to Svalbard (an amazing place), which sees a fair few US tourists. Tromso is a major port on the Hurtigruten cruise line. It's not just about the population size of Tromso!

I can see this working major once or twice a week during peak season, in conjunction with US tour providers.
http://my.flightmemory.com/shefgab Upcoming flights: AMS-RIX-BUD-VDA,ETH-TLV-FCO-LHR,STN-TXL-LCY,LTN-CPH-LTN,LGW-SZG,MUC-LHR

So why are there no direct flights from USA to Rovaniemi? In fact the only flights to Finland is Chicago seasonal by Finnair and JFK all year. They don´t even have Toronto flights. Why would Tromso make sense? Except like mentioned there is massive support from the city which is possible. Sure the N-Norway area is amazing, Lofoten not the least, but that does not in itself generate a profitable flight

Seeing as how DY is opening up low frequency flights to San Juan, geared towards the cruise industry, a seasonal flight from New York to Tromsø could serve a similar niche market

AY also flies seasonally to MIA and YYZ. Toronto starts this weekend.

Because the market is very very little, and rovaniemi is just a small town

IIRC, DY or SK just dropped the TOS-LHR/LGW flight or seriously down graded it. So if that can't work, how does the US work?

The Norwegian-US market is vey big which is one reason why DY operates a BGO-JFK route in the summer (I was amazed about that) . Trondheim , BGO and Stavanger are served by FI and majority of those flights are people ordinations their trip in the U.S . The same with KL's flights to Norway. FI would serve Tormso but the runway is too short!

Also DY plans to use the 737 Max from other destenations in Europe to the U.S :

One could argue that over winter, demand falls on many of the other routes, while Tromso sees Northern Lights tourism. So, I could potentially see DY try it. Might be a risk, might not make much money, but at the same time, might be better utilization of aircraft at that time of the year.
