Inaugural HU 787 PEK-SJC Flight

Sat Jun 13, 2015 4:09 am

With the inaugural day fast approaching, I think this deserves its own discussion. Any expectations for the route, 7x maybe? Should expect the flight plan on Sunday i'm thinking.

Who also will be out? I'll be covering the event with a media pass as well as making a video for SJC on the inaugural.

I really hope HU is successful at SJC. It goes to prove that SJC has the Asian market...already proven by NH's service.

Considering they are projected to lose 1.3 million their first year of operation, time will tell. Chinese carriers, however, are known for not carrying too much about their bottom line and more of prestige of offering an international flight.

Thanks for doing that, Nick. I am looking forward to your pictures and video.

I will be in San Jose Monday. Where will you be stationed for pictures?

That kind of money is perfectly in the normal range for a new long haul route, nothing specific for the Chinese.

The Chinese couldn't care less about prestige. They do it for the economic stimulus such a flight provides.

So it looks like an arrival time of 12:30, give or take about 10 minutes? I'll have to arrange lunch time near the airport.

If you like back lit shots then sure, go for it. I would personally go to the terminal A garage. There will be a water salute by the way, 100% confirmed. Will replace the weekly water discharge by station 20. Anyone know the ship number for tomorrow as well?

Is this a regular revenue flight, or a positioning flight?

No reason for the snark, my friend. Some of us like to watch more than photograph.

It won't likely be feasible for me to actually be at the airport, but I'll track the inbound and step outside (or at least look out the office window) assuming they're landing on the 30s.

Then the schedule shouldn't be confusing. Shouldn't it be at whatever is the published, regularly scheduled flight times?

The scheduled flight times often have padding in them to account or delays resulting from wind variation, weather, ATC flow control, etc. It is not particularly uncommon for eastbound TPAC flights to be quite a bit early with favorable winds and weather.

Same thing happened with the ANA inaugural, when I woke up, they were reporting the plane was an hour early due to winds.

I'm not a photographer. I just would like to watch it land (and enjoy a Double Double). Besides, since I spend about 35 to 40 hours a week at SJC, I'll have plenty of opportunity for future spotting.

Enjoy the inaugural!

My experience is that westbound flights are more commonly an hour early. I've been on NW/DL SEA-NRT or NH SJC-NRT and had them arrive at NRT at least an hour early.

I can't wait to see photos today! Is Tom or someone else there to get photos of the first arrival today?

It certainly cuts both ways - westbound can be very early if winds are lighter, eastbounds are typically early if winds are stronger than expected.

They are landing on the 30s thus far today, so I'll probably just step outside downtown and watch the inbound pass overhead.

It is indeed interesting that HU rather than AC has been tapped to open these markets. Perhaps the Chinese want to see how they develop. It could mean HU will be used to those US cities that are not Star Alliance hubs., though maybe HU will be the carrier of choice if a Houston-Shanghai route ever opens.

Arrived just a little behind schedule on 30L. I do love the wing shape of the 787 as it glides in and flares for landing.

Yes, it got a water cannon salute at the gate.

I got a lot of nice shots from the parking garage roof, only cell shots, but I can't seem to be able to upload here. There were several people shooting pictures with good quality cameras, maybe some are members here. I'll try to create an Instagram account.

Would've liked to see it, but unfortunately my office building isn't quite tall enough to view the ramp. I can see aircraft right until the point where they flare for landing.

I guess when it's in the interest of airport propaganda, there's suddenly no water shortage. The WN Chief Pilot in OAK recently retired - a fantastic leader with 30+ years with the company. His final flight into OAK was denied the customary water salute due to the drought.

Sorry for the thread creep, but this really chaps my hide.

I believe it was mentioned up thread that the airport FD did the water cannon in lieu of their weekly test.

Not that I disagree with your comment about airport propaganda. It does look bad on the City of San Jose. I wonder if anyone will drought shame them?

That kind of short-sighted thinking crept into the media coverage of the event. All went well unless you get your news from KPIX/KCBS. Those geniuses put up a story ignoring the positive angle about the new service and emphasizing the fact that SJC did a water cannon salute during the drought. Imagine the negative press if a there's a plane crash and the fire trucks can't extinguish the fire because there is some sort of problem, the kind that could be found and fixed with regular testing. That's why they DO regular testing. SJC staff made it painfully clear t
hat today's water cannon salute was in lieu of the regular test. In fact, I thought they over did it on the explanation because SAFETY FIRST should be blindingly obvious. Obviously, the reporter needs to buy a clue. I notice the story is unsigned because no sane reporter would put their name on such a sloppy story.

You know, you could at least make a few changes to your comment instead of posting the exact same thing as a thread starter, in here, and on the KCBS page (including your bizarre comment about the "reporter need[ing] to buy a clue," whatever that means.)
