This Is How Helsinki Airport Will Look In 2020

Mon Jun 15, 2015 11:44 am

http://www.finavia.fi/en/news-room/n...ki-airport-will-look-like-in-2020/

Helsinki airport has posted some renders of what the new development, which includes expanding southwards with 12 new gates, and a new west facing wing.

8 new wide body capable gates, doubling the current number to 16.

Looks very nice! I love HEL already and this looks like it'll make it even better.

I will miss the little bus rides to the Ejets though

Thanks for sharing. I fail to see any shopping mall features that has become a trend. Only open space, and what in my opinion a terminal should look like (sitting areas, moving sidewalks, open, airy). I sincerely do hope that they stick to this plan and will not add any advanced features...

Nice to see planned extension as well.

Cheers,

I wonder if the new non-Schengen section will include a separate check-in area for those who travel to a non-Schengen destination ex-HEL?

In anyway, looking good. The buses in the picture are just for scenery, this option they opted for precisely reduces the need for bus transportation. Every gate is within the same building structure, only outer parking stands situated off the terminal will need bus transportation. The new terminal section will however increase the terminal-attached gates by eight. The other option was a satellite terminal which would have needed heavy transportation infrastructure to move the masses between the two structures.

That looks like a very nice expansion of this fine airport.

What I noticed from the pictures is the jet bridges. They have two bridges so that loading of premium pax is separated from the rest. That kind of bridges hasn't been seen in HEL before. I hope they make few of those gates A380 compatible.

It was dropped as it is important to make sure as quick connection as possible. Transferring connecting passengers to a satellite terminal would be time consuming.

Yeah, that thought crossed my mind as well when I saw these renderings.

I like those big windows and all the wood, looking really good. I hope the older Schengen part expands as well, it gets really crowded in times.

HEL gets a long-awaited rail connection in July when the Ring Rail Line opens, a straight access from the terminal to the underground station will be opened later in the autumn. It's a regional train service, travelling time 30 minutes to the city center.

Lots of good things going on around Helsinki at the moment!

HEL has also (new) long haul destination and long haul airline. AY just started direct flights to Chicago and I think it has now been confirmed Beijing Capital Airlines will start PEK-HEL flights in September. ORD of AY is a returning seasonal service and will be shelfed in October.

http://centreforaviation.com/analysi...ul-planning-european-routes-228607

AY announced today plans to recruit 100 new cabin crew in order to satisfy its needs for expansion. The interesting point the CEO made was that the crew is not only needed for long haul ops but also for the will-be-increased operations in Europe. What does this mean? More short haul planes? Time will show. Also, the CEO welcomed BCA to Helsinki saying it will only be good for customers as well as business.

Current HEL terminals have been destroyed by recent renovations where essentially all the open space has been consumed as a disgusting must-walk-through turning and twisting, crowded mall.

Dislike.

AY said the new A350s brings around 1000 new jobs and Finavia estimated expanding HEL will provide 5000 new jobs by 2020, hopefully all that becomes reality, thats what we deed.

Was thinking the same. Their widebody fleet will start crowing next year, more feeding capacity needed then? Nordic Regional Airlines (ex-FlyBe Finland) getting more planes?

But then they would be operated by NRA crews, the CEO of Finnair specifically said we need crew for Euorpean flights as well, so I understood it in a way that what ever expansion they are eyeing on in Europe it will be done by the mainline airline, not NRA or NORRA as they want to be called. Horrible name, btw, how many foreigners can say the Finnish speciality double rolling R. Not well thought in my opinion.

This is the trend these days. Have you visited LGW lately? Same thing. Old Airport that has gone through some extensive renovation (speaking about South terminal now. I haven't been to North terminal for 10 years).

As the logic of HEL terminal is now to keep everything under one roof and this is executed by making it a very long construction, i wish they would construct a kind of "speedy side" and "slow side". By this i mean that those long corridors you can find between old domestic and international temrinals would be transformed to walkalators, so that speedy transfer form one end to another could be done as quickly as possible. That corridor is anyway just a double walk way at the moment, with no shops etc.

I'm hoping that the new expansion also gets some new airlines to fill all those gates. The airport is really dominated by AY, I would not mind seeing carriers like QR. EK, CX and AA (please come back!) at my home airport. Keeping fingers crossed!

An EK A380 would be nice. Not going to happen though. AY has too good connections to the east, and HEL is like the most remote place EK to fly to in Europe.

That is slowly happening. Already JAL started NRT route, now starts the Chinese airline.

What I'm surprised is DY has not started Asia-bound LH ops ex-HEL.

QR already announced HEL once but nothing materialized... AY scares ME3 out from the smallish market? :P
