-I decided to include Boston in this since daily flights would be over 100.
-Interesting how ORD is one of if not the largest US spoke, yet AA's mainline is limited compared to it's other hubs. E75 flights also down, anyone know why?
-Already nearing 100 CR9 departures from DFW, still with a large quantity of MD-80s.
-LAX mainline just 25 more than UA
-JFK is still under 100 daily departures. With US base in NYC maybe a few new transcons are in order to supplement LGA.
-MIA has combined 280 mainline departure per day! Trails CLT for the number two by movements, but with 23 767 departures per day its probably ahead in terms of mainline capacity. Amazing operation there.
-PHX seems to be going strong despite nay sayers. Personally, it seems that without this hub they would leave a big gap in the region. Plus, if it were reduced to a focus operation, Southwest would mop the floor with them in terms of frequencies and destinations.

AA only has 189 mainline flights out of ORD? It just seems like they have more than that maybe it just the increase in E170/75's but to me it just feels like there are more mainline flights out of ORD on AA.

I wouldn't be surprised to see down the road MIA will have more seat miles than DFW the growth out of MIA is crazy....

This is a great article regarding capacity. AA is at 43,000 departing seats from ORD. I bet PHL will soon pass ORD to be the fourth largest hub.

It's normal. MIA is the gAAtewAAy to Central and South America. MIA sees an unbelievable population from South America.

That's because the MD-80 fleet is shrinking, there are 120 of them left in the fleet, and less than 100 will be left by the end of this year. If you fly to or from DFW domestic you still have a good chance to fly on an MD-80, although the data for the 738 at DFW will soon surpass.

That's right, I do remember hearing about a 767 flight for PHL/MIA. I think BA was still flying the 767 to PHL recently, but I think for the summer season that flight has gone to the 788.

The BA services are currently 1x777 and 1x788 daily and that seems to be maintained into the winter season. Given the ever decreasing numbers in longhaul 763s that BA operate it may be the end of the line for their appearance at PHL.

I actually think when the network optimization progresses the US 321's could play a big part in the shifts. Obviously there will be shifts throughout the fleet but because the capacity is so large with the 321's, if a hub like CLT or PHX loses 40 321 flights in favor of 738 or 320's, it can make a difference.

DP has already said that the US hubs are heavy on A319s and he expects them to transition to the AA hubs (probably mostly to replace the MD80s). I suspect we'll see some A321s move around and have 738s replace them where it makes sense. The net lift capacity probably won't change too much.

Also rather interesting is the fact that 738 departures have gone from 127 to 165 ( 38) while A319 departures have gone from 49 to 29 (-20). It looks like the A319's are getting shifted to other hubs.

Regional: 376 -> 365 (-11)
Net: -14

Still massive nonetheless. More daily departures than UA's largest hubs in ORD and IAH.

CR9's have taken over from the CR7's.

The numbers for LGA/JFK/DCA/BOS are not very interesting since they are almost completely flat. Very small reductions at each. Mainline to Regional ratio has decreased a fair amount at DFW while it has increased at ORD. The other hubs have mostly held constant.

I suspect that while ORD is seeing 26 fewer flights this summer, the number of seats has increased. You have 9 more mainline flights. The number of MD-80s continues to decline, while the number of 738s increases. And you have the E175s replacing smaller RJs.

Also, ORD has been rebanked. UA also rebanked ORD, and the point was made that UA would see a slight decline in the number of daily operations, but the number of seats would increase, as some flights were switched to larger aircraft to handle more connections. AA probably has seen a similar result in rebanking.

Sort of off topic, but how much longer does ORD remain as an MD-80 crew base? With only 46 departures, are we getting to the point where MD-80 flights will be handled solely by DFW crews?

I think that you can expect to see more 738s in CLT and PHX eventually, when I say eventually I mean one or two years from now. And I wouldn't be surprised if MIA eventually sees more A321s, whether or not ex-US, to replace the 757s. MIA will see mostly 738s and A321s. DFW will soon be heavy on 738s.

I'd say till the end of 2016 at the latest. Because by then the only MD-80s you will see in ORD will be coming from and flying back to DFW which means that they will be flown by DFW based crews only. I suspect that most ORD based MD-80 pilots are switching to the 738.

The pmUS fleet of 321's is the largest in the world by a big margin. If you include the AA 321's, then AA operates over 10% of the total A321 production line.

Doug Parker has said on investor calls that he believes that there are too many A319s in the pmUS network. I'm not sure that we'll necessarily see A321s move to pmAA but the new ones will probably be based out of AA hubs. I suspect we'll see the A319s be replaced with 738s where it makes sense and the A319s continue to replace MD80 routes out of DFW and ORD.

Me too! Again, thanks for taking the time to post these threads. Miami is definitely an impressive hub and, if I recall correctly, it has the highest seat per flight ratio out of any hub in the US among the big 3.

This is summer, too. PHX's peak is between October and end of April. I am very curious to see you create a thread like this for the winter ops.
