I just can't get over how gorgeous that plane is. May be the best 747-8 yet. If only BA or EY had ordered some.

Also, UPS (5X) was one of the last carriers to order the 744 before it went out of production. Their fleet is relatively new, but will get up there in age as time goes on (duh). Is there a chance that we see an order for the 747-8 by 5X very late in the production run? (Near the end)?

At least we had both in their cargo colors on the 747-8F (if only for awhile in the case of BA).

Did CX cancel their last -8F or just defer delivery?

Well, this reassignment could explain the assignment of 1532 to CX earlier this year. Perhaps Boeing was planning for this already, and it wasn't another frame for them, and perhaps they couldn't list it directly for Atlas until they had made their own announcement.

CX didn't want that 14th frame until 2016 anyway, so it has been bumped in the queue before.

Is this the first 747-8 that has the spinners on the engines painted?

Great shots all around. There is no doubt that the 747-8i is a beauty, now let's hope for more sales.

Sorry , that latest update was missing in my database: the day before yesterday my old (window vista) computer finally crashed and some July updates were not stored at my backup disk. and had to be manually added.

The seat map for Korean Air's 747-8i is up on their website. A very healthy seat pitch for everybody, including economy, which at 33-34 inches is almost unheard of in today's aviation world.

RC565 / LN1526 is reassigned to Atlas Air from Cathay.

Will this still be designated a -867F or will it be changed to -87UF

The production of aircraft parts for L/N1526 had already been started before the Atlas order came in.
Normally (but was is normal in these hectic times) the customer code will not change, because then all the digital administration must be changed, incl. the labels at the already completed parts.
Also the aircraft is built according tabulation number RC565, that is according the reserved Cathay number block

Most probably it will be listed as a 747-867F (Original ordered by Cathay) but with operator code TLS (Atlas Air)

After some research I found that only one (1) 747 Boeing customer code has ever been changed after a cancellation :

L/N123, Original ordered by Braniff (747-127) was delivered to Wardair as a 747-1D1, the tabulation number remained RA762

The "Firing Order Configuration" 3 digit code, which is the same as the airline code, showed 200 before and after it was sold -- interesting. All other Cathay's showed 267 or 367.

Does someone know why Cargolux uses the french spelling of city names? Luxemburg has 3 languages, the local one, and French and German.

Evidently French is the "official" language for business within the Grand Duchy so that may have a role as I am guessing that official aircraft registrations are in French so the French spelling would be used.

At present the 747-8 still has an altitude restriction of 35.500 ft , when operating in high atitude ice crystal conditions

This restriction could end if the latest GEnx FADEC software (B185), developed by General Electric, can convince the FAA to remove the remaining operating restrictions

At present the 747-8 still has an altitude restriction of 35.500 ft , when operating in high atitude ice crystal conditions...

Unlike the common occurrence of engine´s icing in which supercooled liquid droplets freeze by striking the exposed, outer parts of the engine, as the aircraft flies through the clouds, engine core´s ice cumulation involves a complex process in which the ice particles stick to the warm metal surfaces. In the initial stages of the described phenomenon, these act as a heat sink until the metal surface´s temperature drops below the freezing, this way forming a locations where the ice and the water, in the mixed phase, deposit on the metal´s surfaces. The accumulated ice can either disrupt or even totally halt the flow through the engine´s core, by spreading downstream the higher compressor´s stages and combustion chambers, causing a compressor´s stalling or surging with the (total) loss of compression, power roll-back or other malfunction…

The one of the main reasons why there was no similar recorded incidents with the three-spool Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 (the engine options for the Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircrafts) engines lies in the fact that Trent 1000´s IP compressor rotates much faster than the GEnx-1B (-2B)´s booster (LPC) section, given that the GEnx engine LPC´s rotation speed is limited by its fan´s speed. Besides, the GEnx´s LPC´s diameter is kept as large as possible (LPC´s blades´surfaces are much larger than those of IPC of the Trent 1000 engine), thereby rendering all discs and frames heavier then the comparable three -shaft compressor part, causing pretty large inertia and the higher tendency to the stalling and surging.

Comparing 747-8´s GEnx-2B engine to 787´s GEnx-1B engine, except having smaller fan diameter (105 in. vs. 111 in.), GEnx-2B engine has one stage fewer in both, the LPC (3) and LPT (6) than GEnx-1B engine with its 1-4-10 ^ 2-7 architecture (GEnx-2B´s engine architecture was mentioned in the post 79 of this thread).

RR Trent 1000 engines have also a numerous other features that prevent core´s icing, including extra strengthening of IP compressor blades and a heated ESS (Engine Section Stator) system which delivers advanced ice protection, on this way reducing engine´s operational burden and load when the aircraft is flying in the environment with the present combination of water, ice and airflow which is susceptible to settling ice…

Nice regards
