Turkish Aviation July 2015

Tue Jun 30, 2015 4:56 pm

Happy July everyone. I hope everyone's summer is going well.

As TK787 is busy attending to work I will go ahead and get this months thread going.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After 30 years of service, the A310 type will be retired at TK on July 6th when the last freighter TC-JCZ is withdrawn from service.

THY ordered 14 A310 frames 7 -200s, and 7- 300s plus operated a few more on short term leases.

The importance of the model at TK cannot be understated as the model is what opened longhaul world for TK with routes to places such as Bombay and Singapore in 1986, Delhi and Kuala Lumpur in 1987, New York 1988, and Tokyo and Bangkok in 1989.

The A310 also was the first platform where TK introduced premium class product having been all economy class prior.

Thanks for the all the memories and many safe journeys A310 !

Great memories of them my first ever flights on TK were on the A310s many years ago.

Thanks for starting the thread!

I also remember many memorable flights, in particular the domestic flights to/from places such as ADB, ESB, AYT.

As you correctly said, this type was from great importance for TK and it's been replaced by an equally good and better type - the 330. Didn't we say that TK is now the no.1 operator of this type having all versions (332/333/33F) and all different engine types in their fleet?

Not just at TK either.

At the time it was an incredibly flexible aircraft equally suited to regional ops as well as 10-11hr sectors.

Thanks for the new thread.

Indeed it's sad to see A310 leaves the fleet. My first flight was also on an A310 back in 1990 (TK105 from ESB to IST). I've always felt safe and confortable on this plane.

Next week I'll be flying on TK to SFO. I'm very much exited about this trip and I'll share my experience with you.

A310 a great plane to fly, I would still prefer to fly to NYC with it as its Economy seats had more space compared to 777 and 333

I thought DC-10s had business class before A310, I flew DC-10 when I was very small so I don't remember the exact layout of the aircraft ( except the mysterious elevator that went down )

Incredibly versatile aircraft economically that would work on both 1-hour sectors along with 8-hour transatlantic mission.

DC-10s were 345 economy seats. Only time they would have premium seats was when the aircraft were used by president/prime minister on state visits and the Zone-A would have a bed and premium seats/lounge area installed.

I never had the chance to fly the IST-JFK on those, but flew them to many places. I really liked to stubby look of the workhorse. Pax service then some of them were lucky enough to become Cargo planes.
Thanks TK A310s, well done.

As I posted a couple months ago, TK CEO now publicly confirms the airline will create a lounge with free food for economy class transit passengers at the new airport.
TK sees offering such a product would further differentiate it from other hub carrier competitors.

With A333 TC-JOL (C28Y261 ?) and A321 TC-JSS (Y180 or Y178 ?), TK has now 284 aircraft.

B739 TC-JYP (C16Y153 ?) follows these days..

Anadolujet adds TC-SCG, TC-SCK and TC-SCL, 3 B738 to their fleet. All wet-leased from Sunexpress.

Couple of things about TK ticket prices:
-I bought few TK international tickets last month, but I see that the fare is a bit lower now (for travel next week, 2nd week of July, height of high season).
-One ticket I bought from TK website, which always charges foreign transaction fee to my credit card, another through expedia.com which doesn't.
From now on, I will use expedia.com since it tells you what Class of ticket you are buying and no extra charges and wait till two weeks out before a purchase. What do you think?

SK started Stockholm Ankara ARN-ESB-ARN flights yesterday. One weekly flight.

SK also reinstated CPH-ESB-CPH for over a month now. Two weekly flights.

This is a good year-round addition to ESB by SAS.

Hello everyone,
Is there a source for this?
If this is true, it will be surprising for IAD to be ahead of any other cities, especially ORD/LAX?
One reason I can think of, it is ahead of the pack since it can be flown by A333.

As far as I can tell, source is % 100 reliable, other than top management turn off this will be realized summer 2016 tariff. Still no info about type, a 330/777 mix or pure 330. My bet is start with pure 330.

Actually this was long known rumour, (apx two years) but they wait until now.

An update:
JFK-IST-AMS-IST-JFK ticket on TK is only $200 more if purchased a day before departure, as opposed to buying it a month ahead. Is TK having a hard time filling those seats in the middle of the high season? I'll tell you about loads next week.

Greetings from TK79 to SFO, Turkish Airlines flying hamam.

Loads are around 85% on BC and fully packed on EC on a this new 77W with no CC (TC-JJZ).

Weather is so far nice, service is top notch and internet connection is quite good... What else you can ask for?

Following my flight on fr24 is also nice.

As TK flies 3 daily to JFK, I suppose there will always be some extra empty seats. So promoting them few days before the flight sounds logical to me. Also Ramadan may have its own affects.

Remember airline pricing is dynamic so in theory they can move any direction, but in general it can be dangerous to think pricing will not increase the closer one gets to departure date.
I've personally recently seen TK pricing more than double for tickets in the last two weeks prior to travel.

What? The company standard is 23 degrees but the FAs keep it at 26 or more?? Why do they do that? Aren't they afraid of possible trouble?

Just saw on anna.aero that if EK starts PHL the 5 top onward connections would be Indian cities. The MEB3 are benefitting a lot from India being a relatively closed market and them having lots of access to it. Definitely not the free market that MEB3 are always "promoting". India not granting more access for TK is a big loss for Indian travellers and travellers to India, and for TK as this would massively feed their US destinations.

And for September the price is approximately 3900 USD

MH's operations into IST have been looking shaky for a while now, with plenty of predictions on its impending demise. Based on a recent airlineroute posting, the airline has decided to pull the plug on flights to IST from 25 August.

this must be for business class and not economy as the latter would be far cheaper if you flew by QR.

Demand between IST and KUL round trip was 90,000 pax in 2014 but cannot sustain both daily TK + 3 weekly MH especially with TK offering a superior product especially in terms of frequencies. MH is better off code sharing with TK on this route (which they already are doing so) and saving value able cash in the process.

Question...with the recent outbreak of MERS in ICN and anti-China protests in IST, has that effected TK's loads on ICN/PEK/CAN/PVG recently?

Although, 8.5% Yoy growth is a very good number, we have had growth rates of 20, 15% in the last years. Even last year, i think it was around 15% if I am not mistaken. I wonder how much of a role the IST airport plays in restricting the growth rate of TK.

On a side note, I was on a very new A333 last week, TC-JOJ, I think delivered early June. I noticed that the seats in economy were very different than the older A330s and 777s I've been on TK. Anyone else noticed these new seats?

Apparently TK have announced that they'll also start Durban (DUR) from end of October, as tag-on from JNB, reported on routesonline.
Also mention that during NS16 the DUR and CPT routes might combine as one, as nonstop to DUR, tag on to CPT.
Any more info on this?

Greetings from LAS.

I'm surprised by the tourism potential of Sincity and it is being under serviced by European and ME carriers. I see that LAS is very similar to DXB but it has a very big plus, gambling.

I returned back to previous forums to check overall passenger potential graphics provided by LaxIntl but could not see LAS in that graph. I believe that TK should consider LAS in wishlist as it can potentially benefit transfering rich tourists and gamblers to LAS from Israil, Russia, East/Central Europe and ME.
The future is in the skies.

LAS is basically a charter market from overseas - its virtually a 100% leisure market. Look at two European scheduled carriers that serve the LAS - BA and VS - they send higher density aircraft configured with lots of Y class seats. Rest of Europe service is from charter carriers like Condor, Edelweiss, Thomas Cook etc.

The real growth potential is from Asia, but even Asian carriers like JL, PR, SQ have failed to make LAS work due to the revenue mix problem. Today only KE remains with 4x weekly.

You wont see TK in LAS unless a diversion flight. TK would have much better opportunity in a real market like SEA, DEN, etc if they start looking at secondary destinations in the US.

Are a couple TK A340's being phased out?

They will keep four A340's for some time to come.

Have you guys heard anything about Lufthansa making MUC a seasonal route from IST? I was checking options for a trip in November and all the flights were 1-stops at Frankfurt? I sincerely enjoyed connecting in MUC as I find it a very transit friendly airport.

Edit: LH was complaining about lack of slots, what will they do with the MUC ones?
