Whoops-- Kid Cranks Up Chopper At Airshow

I guess someone forgot to take the "keys" out of the "ignition". Uh, oh Spaghettios!

The kid was only 6. I wonder if he'll remember it when he's older...

If not, I guess he can just Youtube it, now that I think about it. Things sure are different that when I was 6 .

Very scary, and illustrates why you need to pull the batteries at airshows.

Still doesn't guarantee you don't have a bad P-lead though.

Looks like the engine was only dry motored. Start switch held down, thankfully no fuel added.

I think you're right. Would that have overheated for being on so long before fuel was introduced?

I thought most helicopters were relatively simple to start up.

Brings to mind the ejection seat accident at Willow Grove NAS in 1980. A 7 year old boy who was ejected through the canopy of an S-3 Viking later died of his injuries. Lots of others suffered serious burns. Fortunately, no deaths or injuries in this case.

The story changed later to say a teen actually started it. Either way the chopper wasn't as secure as it should have been. I wasn't there on Saturday. I went to the show Sunday and didn't hear a thing about it until Monday.

The starter motor could have burned out. On some engines you can run it for 45 seconds to a minute, then must give it 3 minutes cool down before cranking again, or something similar.

The news article said the aircraft was pulled from service to be inspected.

FADEC jet starts are automatic............batteries on and hit start...........watch it happen on the screen............usually the batt switches are overhead and I doubt the kid would or could be fooling around up there, so the teen helping makes sense........in any case there are some red faced EMS pilots that spent some time on the chief pilots carpet the next day.........it won't happen again.............
