Jet Blast Puts Three In Hospital

Jet blast puts three in hospital

Three tourists have been discharged from hospital after sustaining injuries at the jet-blast area on the inland end of Rarotonga International Airport’s runway.

Witnesses say the air blast from the take-off was so strong that it threw the tourists to the ground injuring two of them and knocking one unconscious.

Island resident Larry Price, who told CI News about the incident, says warning signs at the area aren’t clear enough for the public to see.

“I don’t believe there is adequate protection for the public on the Nikao side of the runway.”

Anybody think of the St. Maarten fence surfers when they saw the thread title?

sure did - it brought to mind a Youtube video of a gal getting blown across the street and into a concrete barrier on the other side. I still cringe when I think of that one.

Oh man this is going to ruin it for St Maarten and other such places

If you choose to stand there you accept the risks, surely?

If St. Maarten hasn't changed already, it's not going to. They know why that area's a tourist attraction.

Most tourists are proabably not that into aviation that they understand the real risk, even if there are signs.

oh yeah!

I've wondered if SXM could install retractable blast deflectors like they have on carriers?

But not sure how one of those would stand up to a 744 takeoff roll

I have been on the seawall side of RAR, and the article is correct, the runway is above the road a bit and jetblast goes over you. Still, if blown its not a beach but a concrete road and wall. In this case of the injuries I imagine they are talking about a road I see on google on the Avarua side of the runway.

NZ does fly the 77W to RAR with those monster -115s and that little road is very close, must be quite a thrill

Jet blast is no joke! Has anyone ever gotten blasted by the Concorde? A concorde came to Vegas in the mid 1990's. A large group of us stood outside of the airport perimeter fence to get a close look as she came in for a landing. Let's just say, this baby not only picked me up, but I was airborne for about 10 feet. My landing...... Well.... I landed on my back, and had the wind knocked out of me. I would do it again if given the chance! It was insane! We had L-1011's, DC-10's, and other heavy metal land before the concorde, and it kicked up some warm wind..... However, the blast from the concorde was incredible.

A few hours later, when she departed, nobody dared to stand in the path.

I can't really understand this.

I have watched planes take off from that spot at least 6 times in the past year, and never has the jet blast been strong enough to push anyone over, not even with Air NZ 777-200 fully laden to LAX.

That video is rigged, the truck has no engine and its devoid of anything that could make it have a chance.... nevertheless the danger of jet blast is real.

Hope those 3 guys make it ok.

I have surfed that fence at RAR with a 763 and a 738 on landing and takeoff pretty much every day for the 4-5 days I was there as I was staying in a house literally about 100m away. I enjoyed myself.

Ofcourse the video is rigged, its a airline training video. So you think if that old truck still had the engine in it it would have continued on its way behind that airplane just fine? If the engine was still in that truck it would have just went right with it into the bay

So whose fault is that? Maybe a little common sense knocked into people will help. Too much coddling and protection of stupid going around these days.

You can't expect people to understand jet blast without experiencing it. People in general don't have a very good handle on the kinds of forces various things are able to impart, because we don't experience those sorts of things in our daily lives. I think a lot of people expect jet blast to be similar at worst to a hurricane force wind, because how can anything man-made be stronger than nature?

The first time I experienced a direct jet blast at St. Maarten, it drove me down to the waterline just like you see happen in every video taken from there. And I *know* how strong jet blast is. I thought I was prepared for it.

A person who doesn't regularly watch videos of jet blast on YouTube - and not many people do - isn't going to have much of a chance. It's not "stupidity", it's just ignorance, and not inexcusable ignorance. It's not the kind of thing most people really need to know. So there do need to be at least warning signs (as there are in St. Maarten - not sure in Raratonga).

I still don't like that I could never find a decent diecast model of F-BTSC in that livery.
