AC Fuelling Disruptions YYZ

Fri Jul 03, 2015 2:02 pm

Haven't seen it posted yet, if so, please delete.

Looks like AC is having some serious cancellations this mornign due to 300 fuelers not showing up to work. Seems to be due to AC switching fuel suppliers.

I am surprised this started now. I would imagine maximum disruption and effect would be during arrival of athletes and organizers of the Pan Am games, which I believe begins next week.

it appears not that some flight are departing and heading to neighbouring airports to fuel up and
continue onto their destinations. a handful of WestJet Encore and Air Canada flights have come to or are on
there way to YHM. I am sure that a few have headed to BUF and YOW as well.

Indeed, just seen WS667 YYZ-YYC land at YHM. AC161 YYZ-YVR departed a few minutes ago.

I can confirm this as well. I live in Windsor, Ontario and my house is right under the approach to runway 25 (the longest runway here with an ILS)

I already saw two Air Canada A320s

AC177 Toronto - (Windsor) - Edmonton
AC125 Toronto - (Windsor) - Calgary

I have a feeling there will be more. From what I understand, the fueling company told its employees that they will not have a job (or a guarantee for a job) once AC switchers providers and a great number of fuelers in YYZ have called in sick.

I'm not really following it but I heard they'd been ordered back to work. Shouldn't take too long to get it cleared up. What a rough week for WS, pretty messy at customer service in YYZ at the moment as I've got a buddy stuck there.

Somebody asked the agent, "Why don't we just try to fly as far as we can with the fuel leftover from the last flight?"

It was announced that Air Canada, and probably WestJet and Air Transat are switching refuelling company to Swissport starting July 1, and that the contract with the Consortium is ended. Today is July 3, so are the missing fueling agents are of Swissport or Allied?

I was on DL 2320 YYZ - ATL. Did a gas and go at DTW -- and then a messed up head count cost us another 30 min. Arrived nearly 4 hours late in ATL

I was one of the few lucky ones as I could snag a late connection home in ATL

Cabin crew were great -- worked VERY hard to help everybody .. they and some deadheads were also seriously messed up by the idiot strikers

Wild cat strikes are ILLEGAL. Fuelers who walked off -- did you get that? The infamous Don Jail is not a very nice place .. so I hope you enjoy it ..
I love to fly, and it shows!

Swissport may hire some ex-Consortium workers... if they want, because they were unionized, which is not the case with Swissport i guess. Any idea what is their hourly rate? What about ASIG?

it was a mess today. I'm now stuck in Edmonton YEG because rental cars close at midnight latest. This is how it started off for me today:

original flight: YYZ-YEG @ 18:25 on an A320; new flight:20:40 on an A321 (newer one btw).

Got a text at 16:04 stating that my flight has been cancelled due to "ticketing issue." After calling customer service they explained the situation.

At the gate at 19:30 for 20:10 boarding. Aircraft from YYC not at the gate. Came in at 20:10 or so. They said to give them 20 mins for boarding to commence. Nothing happened. Meanwhile captain came out and told them to update the departure time, now 21:25. We ere told that we will be making a tech stop in Hamilton to fill up or wait several hours at Toronto to be fueled.

20:45 or so, boarding begins.

21:30 or so still sitting at the gate. Update from flight-deck, "since this is an unusual flight for us, we have to feed the computer, calculate performance etc."

22:00 or so we leave the gate for the 58 km flight; my shortest to date (the only interesting thing of the evening for me). ETA would be 22:42, so lets go with that for the arrival time.

22:42 landed and what seemed like full reverse thrust and full breaking. Still ended up at the ens of the runways and made a u-turn and backtracked. Pilot backtracked on the runway very fast, put a great deal of power to get the plane moving. parked away from terminal.

23:15-ish refueling begun. We were told it would be about 45 mins. 35-40 mins later we were told there was about 500 kilos to go.

00:20 or around then we took-off. Flight time 3hrs 40 mins.

04:07 Toronto time (02:07 local), arrived YEG. I have nothing better to do now that write this post.

Pretty interesting position... I'm guessing that you don't know what the underlying causes for today's actions are.

I talked to several flight crews at YYZ today, and as you can understand - they were all inconvenienced in some way - and they were all in FULL SUPPORT of the fuellers - take that to mean whatever you want...

Pretty interesting that you want someone who is about to lose their job, through no fault of their own, to go to jail

Really?! The Don Jail has been closed since 1977 and the east wing was closed in 2013. You think that this warrants jail time? Their frustrated and probably upset over losing their jobs.

Ding Ding. Who cares how screwed up the flights are, you're losing your jobs so ASIG can pay junk. When I worked at YOW, ASIG was more or less begging people to work for them. I remember hearing from their employees that they'd offer various gift cards for showing up for their shifts.

It's funny because you hear time and time again that the race to the bottom is ruining pilot wages. Well guess what, it's affecting everybody in this industry. I don't blame them for not showing up either. Hopefully they can't staff their operation at $14 an hour.

Pay peanuts, get monkies.

14 bucks to fuel an airplane, drive a pedler or a tank truck... in winter conditions and the stress of the next one waiting to be refuelled... is very cheap. It's not worth the effort. It's a plane to refuel, not a joke. Rate should be 20 and up. Don't know how much it pays in Western Canada... where salaries are known to be better

Couple of things ....

Labour laws are labour laws -- I am a former teamster from MANY years ago and whatever one may think of that organisation and/or the laws, we were told to follow the law EXACTLY. And, yes, I have been in a similar position to the affected employees so I took matters into my own hands and found a better job at a competitor, taking advantage of the experience I had gained

I am aware that the Don jail as been gone a long time (I grew up in Hamilton), that it was not a nice place, and was the place for executions at one time -- was just making a point

As a flight crew I am in full support of unionized workers. I have many friends who fuel planes for a living and I have nothing but respect for them. They are always working on a skeleton crew and if someone is sick or can't come to work that day, the others have to work twice as hard. Oil prices have not gone down, the prices at FBOs have not gone down (I mean geez, $200 for a GPU start? Are you kidding me?), so where can companies cut cost? Salaries.

Anyway, I hope these poor souls who worked hard eventually find something better.

I can't speak for ASIG's Canadian operations, but at DTW fuelers make roughly $9.00-$10.00 an hour. Hardly more than minimum wage.
Now you're flying smart
