United Airlines flights in U.S. were grounded on Wednesday due to computer system glitch.
A call to the airline was not immediately returned.

Quote Rampart; On Flightaware, It looks as if flights inbound to EWR are diverting to other aiports?
That wouldn't surprise me as they have to be out of gate space at EWR.

Yep, multiple reports of system-wide grounding due to 'automation issues'.
Quoting United787 (Reply 32):
This sounds familiar, didn't they have this same issue in the past 12-24 months?
Quoting skymiler (Reply 36):
All it takes is for an IT tech to fat finger a command in a router to deny access -- and, unfortunately, due to hacking attempts the complexity of these pieces of equipment (which are the first lines of defense) has increased 10 fold in the last few years.

I'd be curious of the root of the problem. That's not something that happens without some major anomaly, either intentional or seriously derelict.
Quoting UA444 (Reply 41):
I see your head is right in the same place. Keep telling yourself everything is peachy. Tell that to all the stranded customers who are watching other airlines have normal operations due to having structurally sound IT.
Quoting fsnuffer (Reply 43):
You would be surprised how one small misconfiguration or hiccup in a complex IT system can bring down the house of cards. The time to recovery is all dependent on your check book. You want a hot standby system that can instantly take over in a failure that is going to cost you large. You want a standby system that takes an hour to ramp up, probably about 1/5th the cost. This is a constant battle for the IT folks. As in every business we are under budget pressure. So all we can do is present the options, cost, and risk to management and they in the end make the call.
