Looks like this flight went out of its way to avoid Chinese airspace for some reason. Other flights like EVA62 VIE-TPE follows the regular Europe-Asia track (Turkey, Afghanistan, India...)

CA is the IATA code for Air China, from the P.R.O.C. Please amend the title to read "Unusual CI TPE-FRA Routing".

I am not an expert but I can tell you that on my previous flight on EVA from Taipei direct to Paris, they did the same flight path like CI. On my return, we did cruise south and passing through Chinese cities like Guilin before entering Taiwan airspace from the South.
EVA Vienna to TPE is not a direct flight. It is usually serviced by A330 and makes a stop at Bangkok.
I think there are only two direct flight out of Taipei to Europe, one is EVA to Paris, and the other in CI to Frankfurt. The CI flight usually is of a good load as I was being told by travel agent.

Taiwan carriers either route direct flights to Europe via this Korea/Russia route or south of the Himalayas. The PRC do not want them flying over sensitive areas in western China . Or at least that was the reported reason when cross straits flights started but since they now fly to Urumqi I'm not sure what issue the PRC have today besides making it economically difficult for CI and BR.

That is a good point! Wonder how CI fly to Urumqi? The route and not to mention, BR now flies to Inner Mongolia city.

My mistake! I apologize. I thought in the past, it has always been transit at Bangkok, do you know since when this was made non-stop? Just check EVA, it shows a flying time of 15 hours 10 minutes! Wow, that is long for A330-200!

The scheduled elapsed time for the nonstop FRA-TPE flight of CI is longer than a connecting flight via HKG, due to having to route around Mainland China.
Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been...
