HAL KLAS-PHNL-Only Westbound Redeye In The U.S.?

Is HAL Flight #17 from LAS to HNL the only current westbound redeye in the United States? The flight leaves LAS at around
155 AM and arrives in HNL at 5 AM. In my limited research I could not find any other passenger flights within the U.S. that does
a westbound redeye. If there are I would be interested in knowing which flight or flights those would be.

It makes from LAS where it doesnt from other markets.

People want to maximize their time from Vegas because its a strictly vacation market and the extra distance helps

HNL is very slow overnite when UA155 737-800 arrives from MAJ at 250a all the RMI (Marshal Island Govt) vans just park on the arrival curb no one else around .. It's like a ghost town .. No taxis nothing ..

ASA135 ORD-ANC. Depart ORD 11:55 pm, arrive ANC 3:38 AM.... 6-1/2+ hour flight on a 738.

Wow that is a stark contrast to when I lived in HNL 93-95. At that time, before I got my job with Regal Travel (Yes, I moved there with no job or housing lined up) wouldn't do that again, it's hard to get a place to live when you have no viable means of supporting yourself, luckily we found a great landlord who allowed us to pay 6 months in advance for rent, it's also amazing how many people didn't want us to do that.

I digress, we would go out to KHNL with a camera & camcorder then spend hours in the open air part of the terminal photographing planes in the middle of the night, you know where you can be just a few feet away from a 747 coming in to the ramp area, still not many big airports like that, a real nice place to spend a few hours, especially the gardens.

I can remember counting no less than 5 QF 767 tails all lined up, right next to each other on the Ewa concourse at midnight, during the day time, those same gates had 5 or more JL 747 tails at them.

I remember photographing GA 743's & M11's coming through in the middle of the night, SQ 747's, CP DC-10's & later 767's, PR 747's & many more during the wee hours of the morning.

It was nice to have the only movements international intermixed with AQ conversion 737's flying middle of the night cargo flights to the outer islands?

I believe DL sometimes runs a midnight SJU-JFK westbound redeye.

It appears to be the only westbound redeye in the US..the only other place I could see a potential flight like that is from LAX for...very very price sensitive traveler. although LAX-Hawaii is already pretty saturated by every carrier and their regional, so to speak.

LAS is one of the biggest convention markets in the country.

I take that flight from LAS to HNL about 3 times a year. I love it because it gives me an extra day almost. Rather then dealing with crowds later in the day, I'm on the beach by 10.00am and enjoying my day. That flight is full most of the time. I have spoken to many Hawaiians that take that flight because they can stay in Vegas till the last minute, hop on the flight and then go work once they land in HNL.

Well you're right about how full that flight goes out almost every night. I guess it gives the people 6 hours or so to
sober up before going into work the next day

Spirit has a southbound redeye, or more just an overnight. I'm not sure how to classify it.

Its from PBG (Plattsburgh, NY) to FLL departing at 2:42 AM and arriving at 5:55 AM.

Do they have any other flights like this, or is this their only one?

Probably not SJC. We havent had a flight on DL to JFK in forever

You should have seen LAS back in the days of the America West NiteFlites. Leave LAS at around 1:45AM and get into
OAK at 3:00A, just to name the one time I flew that bank of flights.

Yes and no, in the case of HNL-LAS-HNL pretty much, on other routes, not even close.

Yep, LAS is #3 in the US and with the next expansion of the convention center in the works I can see #1 being soon enough.

Remember that Las Vegas's nickname is the "ninth-Hawaiian Island" due to the high rate of Hawaiians that visit.

There are five flights from LAS to HNL: (as of yesterday) 3 HA - 17, 7, 5 (332), G4 - 752 and Omni 762.
HA -17: 01:55PDT - 05:00HST
HA - 7: 09:00PDT - 12:00HST
HA - 5: 18:15PDT - 21:25HST

That Omni bird can be a 762 or 772, depends how busy we are, if it's something like Golden Arm weekend it's a T7 for sure.

In my years booking travel in Honolulu, the local population was quite happy to go to Vegas for 5-7 days, There have been countless charters & decent scheduled service for decades.

And everyone wants to maximize their time in Vegas to the maximum, several of the Downtown hotels (which are pretty popular with the Hawaiians) make sure rooms are ready for the early arrival & the midnight check out.

The red-eye departure from HNL after work on Friday, then come home on the red-eye back to HNL & go straight to work. I can't function the next day after being up all night, but most people don't have the problems I do sleeping in public places.

Pretty much, the Golden Arm is a group for people who managed to roll the dice for over an hour on the craps table ((Hawaiian's are serious craps players), the Golden Arm weekend is where we invite everyone who is a member of the club and their families in for a weekend of fun and partying.

It"s old time Vegas, lots of fun and games, some serious gambling, but more importantly for us, it's a chance to spend time with our friends and customers.

I wouldn't count them amongst the number of seats available on the route since I don't believe I can just book a seat freely with them.

What about PHX, as PHX is about the same starting point as LAS, when headed in direction of going to HNL. PHX handles a lot of connections atleast from AA/US. But starting from East and reaching HNL at 5am would be truly a red-eye experience to start a vacation in HNL.

But it's not atypical for long-haul trips from the east coast. e.g. BA's EWR-LHR-BLR tha departs in the afternoon and is timed to reach BLR around 5am, but widebody long haul,with meal service flight experience makes it a lot better.

It is difficult to have a true red eye flight west bound. However, UA does offer some flights from EWR to LAX and SFO as well as IAD to LAX that depart 9:30 to 10:30 pm local time and arrive 12:00 am to 1:00 am local time. This being 5.5 hours to 6 hour flight, I am sure there are many red eyes!

According to Google flights.EWR-HNL is an 11 hour flight departing 9:15 am and arriving 2:07 PM.

I guess you could do an evening flight - say midnight and arrive at around 5:00 am.

Perhaps ATL to ANC?

That would be very unpopular. Almost all the passengers would be tourists heading to HNL. Arriving at 5 AM would mean hanging around for most of the day until they could check in to their hotel (unless they paid for the previous night). Most hotels don't permit check-in until aound 3 PM. And where would the aircraft that arrived HNL at 5 AM go? If it turned around and returned nonstop to the east coast at, say 8 AM, it wouldn't arrive until after midnight local time, and passengers would lose a day at the beach compared to today's eastbound redeyes HNL-EWR and HNL-JFK.

I wouldn't really consider those red eyes, at least not anymore than say US463 PHX-SEA 2240-0129 or US703 PHX-PDX 2255-0128. They're more late night arrivals than early morning.

In the summer, B6 runs a late JFK-LAX. B6 1023. Leaves at 930p, arrives 1244 am PT, 344am ET.

If you are on the NY time zone, that's pretty pink eye...almost pink enough for red eye. Half the flight is on the back side of the clock
