Government Has Own Secret Airline: Janet

Mon Jul 20, 2015 6:32 pm

Some may have heard of this before this post, but I found this video to be pretty interesting.

http://www.businessinsider.com/us-go...ecret-airline-janet-2015-7?ref=yfp

Sheds light on the 'secret' government airline named JANET. Anyone know how long JANET has been around?

Fly into LAS and their planes are all sitting on a ramp over near Atlantic Aviation and Constant Aviation. Not much of a secret. They've been around as long as I can remember, which admittedly isn't too long, but still they've been there for quite a while.

There was even a mission in Microsoft Flight Simulator where you had to fly a Janet 737 to Area 51. Secret government airline yeah right

What makes it pretty "mysterious" is the super light gray reg numbers painted on white fuselage.

Its interesting that the 736's were former CA aircraft. I wonder if the govt scoured them before placing them into Area 51 Airways.

You can even track them on FlightAware. They are under the code WWW

All of their LAS flights are filed to Tonopah Test Range (KTNX). But several flights a day cancel their FAA flight plans near Area 51 and drop in.

Here are examples of flights cancelling their flight plan near Area 51 and "dropping off the radar" as the FAA stops tracking them.

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/W...8/history/20150720/1305Z/KLAS/KTNX

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/W...1/history/20150720/1405Z/KLAS/KTNX

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/W...2/history/20150720/1505Z/KLAS/KTNX

And here are flights with essentially the same flight plan, but continue on to to Tonopah Test Range

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/W...5/history/20150720/1250Z/KLAS/KTNX

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/W...5/history/20150720/1440Z/KLAS/KTNX

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/W...1/history/20150720/1145Z/KLAS/KTNX

Notice the first set of flights drop off the radar halfway between LAS and TNX? That's the Area 51 flights. The last set continued on as filed with the FAA.

I've driven past LAS on Tropicana Blvd. and seen a JANET 737 taking off to the southwest.

For some reason, I thought that the JANET livery (white with a red stripe on the window panels) came about, because they had bought a 732 from Western Airlines and simply painted over the Western title on the tail and fuselage.

They get transported ....basically dematerialized in the terminal building and rematerialized into their correct seat. It makes for very efficient boarding, although apparently some pax have been 'lost' in the process, only to be found later on a departing Southwest flight!

While plenty about Janet may be mysterious, their existence is not. The B737s (used to be 732s for a long time) have been flying in and out of LAS several times a day for decades, and they very much follow the same rules as any other airline using the airport.

While I appreciate the thread implying Janet is "breaking news," the reality is that many of us who follow the aviation industry have known about its existence for years. If you've been to Vegas and looked at the airport for any amount of time, you will likely have seen Janet's taking off or landing in between all of the WN and US aircraft. Their existence or where they fly to is not so much a secret; but what exactly goes on at some parts of Area 51 might well be though. To be really top secret, it is unlikely the government would ferry people around from one of the nation's busiest airports (located right next to the busy Strip, no less) in bright white Boeing 737s!

I don't think it matters, as these, while "top secret" clearances are granted to them, what they do likely does not involve strategy or information about the bigger picture.

These are civilian workers. They are likely assigned one task out of a huge program. They likely do not see the full picture of what they are working on.

So even if someone captured one of these civilian workers in an attempt to siphon information from them, they would at most only obtain information about one to five tasks out of tens of thousands of tasks.

Note, in the LAS photo above, how HUGE the parking lot is. There are a ton of civilian workers who are shuttled out to the desert every morning. None of them likely know anything about the full picture of what they are working on. They clock in, do their 8 hours of work, and go home.

It was actually declassified too, at least parts of it, in 2013.

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-w...evealed-in-declassified-cia-report

It's certainly no secret. The US Government however would not admit to having it, despite satelitte images being around for many years. Many photographs from nearby mountains overlooking the field have verified it's existence for decades.

Just because the government won't admit to having it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist and photos can't be taken of it.

JANET a secret? EG&G has been around a long time running these.

It has been posted on FedBizOps before and is certainly not a secret. The Nellis flight test range flights have been around decades.

Funny how they still carry the basic Western Airlines paint without the W.
When I was a kid, my dad use to take us to work at Western ( Western did EG&G MTC Checks), and the EG&G 737s were ExWAL 737-247 (At that Time) and were painted in Westerns paint without the W. I was told it was to blend in with Westerns normal aircraft out of LAS.
Even when some T-43s and -200 were brought in some carried Western type N numbers like N45??
There were a few stored at AMARC the last time I took the bus tour. Sorry for the blurry picture. I took from the bus, and between the tint and movement my camera couldn't catch a clear pic.

Janet's planes all have civil regs, so IMHO, this topic is correctly under civil aviation.

your opinion is noted and ignored. Plenty of military planes have civilian markings or are still used for military purposes, such as these. It is not a public charter.

Fact remains EG&G has been around many years and is not exactly a "secret". Having flown missions over the Nellis Test Range many times I can tell you their presence is not unheard of.

Nothing overly secretive to see. Old 737s with red stripes flying workers to a dry lake bed where they most likely test defence artillery or weapons. I don't believe the alien conspiracies in the slightest.

I imagine they probably go to look at the aliens that are hidden there and before they get back on the plane to Las Vegas then their memories are wiped clean by a man in a black suit. Either that, or the aliens like to gamble but they don't know how to drive and the government can't convince them to fly on Southwest.

your opinion is noted and ignored. Plenty of military planes have civilian markings or are still used for military purposes, such as these.

AFAIK these are transporting mostly, if not all, civilian contractors, and flown by civilian pilots.

Fact remains EG&G has been around many years

Well, it was around for many years. It hasn't been EG&G for several years after being acquired by URS/AECOM.

I'd rather be on the ground wishing I was in the air, than in the air wishing I was on the ground!

The planes are operated by crews employed by AECOM, a civilian company. The planes are also owned by AECOM, not the military. Furthermore, this thread has been up for 8 hours and has over 8,000 views. I'm sure the mods have seen it and if any of them felt it should be under military & space, they could have and probably would have moved it by now. If they do move it, I'll own up and eat my words.

I know, one example off the top of my head is that the military charters DL 744s to transport troops on occasion. Would you classify these flights as military operations? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the definition of a military flight is that it is operated by military personnel, not civilians.

Janet threads have been around since the days of their 737-200s. A long time.

How does one go about to being a JANET pilot?

"Yeah. Is it hard to get to be in the Secret Service?"
"Look, uh, if you're really interested, if you give me your name and address, we'll send you all the information on how to apply. How's that?"
