New USA Airport Terminals

Sun Jul 26, 2015 5:30 am

What airports in the US have new terminals being proposed or under construction? I am aware of large projects like LGA but would be curious to know what small and mid size airports have in the works too. Any links with pics would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks

MSY will start construction of an entirely new terminal this Fall. It is projected to be finished by Spring 2018. 30 gates initially with room to expand to 42 gates if needed. Most of the old terminal will be demolished once the new terminal opens. All pertinent info can be found from this link.

MIA is still in phase mode for a new central terminal.

Rumor has it that construction work will begin in 2020 with final completion in 2030. I really hope that isn't true though.

MSY looks amazing, especially from the video. The main terminal looks like it has more than twice the square footage of the concourses, and even if they expand the number of gates it still looks disproportionately large, but in a good way. Someone should show this to Donald Trump, he would be really happy. He keeps talking about how our airports are third world compared to Asia and the ME. This looks like MSY will be the premiere airport terminal in the US, too bad it is not much of a gateway.

PHX started a few months ago on what is essentially a top-to-bottom replacement of Terminal 3 to modernize, overhaul, and greatly expand the terminal itself. It will centralize security, add more space for shops and retail, additional ticket counter space, a larger baggage reclaim, and an additional dozen gates to facilitate the subsequent closure of Terminal 2. The end product should look fantastic when completed around 2020. The terminal will remain operational throughout, but I would consider it to be more of a demolition/new build than a renovation due to the extensive work being done.

MIA has always had a construction project, the J concourse which almost every airline not AA is at & the AA D concourse which after years finally got finished. The E, F and G concourse areas are very old and to be modernized. Something very nice could be done with Concourse E if it were modernized properly, right now gate E8 is getting A380 capable for BA so it is start.

The Port Authority needs to demolish Terminal 2 and build a new terminal at the current T2 and T3 sights. It could be an expansion of Terminal 1 or T4 but that is prime land at JFK perhaps the best terminal sight in the whole place,

Not really a new terminal, but BWI is renovating and expanding D and E terminals to attract more international flights. They're currently expanding D and E and already are considering expanding again before the first expansion is finished.

FWA should be announcing their plans for a terminal expansion soon, with the terminal expanding to where the FBO is now and groundbreaking in 2016. The FBO moves in mid-January to a new site, and the land will be reused for the terminal. FWA is very hush-hush about this expansion, but there will be an FIS. In the meantime, FWA added a half-height jetway to one of the lower-level gates.

SBN redid their terminal not all that long ago, and is in the process of adding an FIS.

ORD is working on making two gates at T5 ready for the A380, and EK has expressed interest in bringing the A380 to ORD the moment the gates are ready.

SAN is now officially in the early selection/planning stages of replacing (and enhancing) Terminal 1, originally built in the '60s. (A much needed replacement!)

There are now 5 design options available and apparently the 'winner' will possibly be selected later this year.

More info available at
http://www.san.org/Airport-Projects/Airport-Development-Plan

This upcoming project will effectively take Lindbergh Field to it's limits of capacity and growth so it's pretty important to get it right.

HNL will build a new commuter terminal next to the Diamond Head Concourse (UA gates) currently occupied by hardstands. This new commuter terminal will house Mokulele and Island Air. Once it is built, the existing commuter terminal next to Terminal 2 (interisland) will be demolished and a new L-shaped Mauka Concourse will be built connected to Terminal 2. This new concourse will be for HA.

No plans to start anytime soon, but OMA has a master plan in place that's kind of interesting (the link is from 2013, but I haven't heard anything since, though I think some recent parking garage construction and ramp repaving may have been part of this):

A new terminal opened two years ago at PWM. It was built onto the existing terminal, but all check-in desks, security screening, concessions, and gate areas are new. Southwest and United still use the gates in the old part of the terminal, but everything else has moved into the newer wing.

Yes, probably sooner than later. Meanwhile, the TRIP terminal remodeling
is still in full swing.

Question I have is right now DFW have extemded the ramp at south end of international terminal ( Term D)
for QANTAS among others to park during extended layovers. Once Terminal F is up and running,
they're going to find someplace else to park those jets.

It will be a vast improvement over the hodgepodge terminal setup now. Basically, there are several different concourses and terminals built over a span of 40 years that have vastly different architectural styles, and no common areas to connect the concourses behind security. It's a pretty ineffecient design, and the parts of the building are so old that maintenance is a big issue. This new terminal will remedy all of that. Looking forward to it opening in a few short years.

EWR has a long term plan for a third 4/22 runway west of the current 4L/22R. It will go thru where B's banjos and easternmost parts of A and C are now. The new A is a first step in making that happen. If I had to guess I'd say probably some kind of new B will go where the bulk of A is now and stretch to C.
