VietJet Receives 230-seat A321

Mon Jul 27, 2015 10:03 am

VietJet has taken delivery of the first A321 configured with 230 seats. It's the third A321 for the carrier, the first two aircraft are equipped with 200 seats.

--------------

Wizz Air will be next to receive the 230-seat A321 and I suppose many more (low cost) carriers will follow. I believe Vueling was interested too.
What we leave behind is not as important as how we've lived.

You beat me to it! Does somebody have a seat map? I assume 28" pitch everywhere?

230 seats capacity now also listed in the EASA TCDS, page 53:

http://easa.europa.eu/system/files/d..._%20A318_A319_A320_A321_Iss_17.pdf

And now it's official, 195 seats on the A320, see page 30.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

Can somebody translate 'a virtual envelope of the LOPA' into comprehensible English:

PAGE 53:

Maximum Seating Capacity = 220

Modification 157272 enables the maximum seating capacity to be increased up to
230.

This modification defines a virtual envelope of the Layout of Passenger
Accommodations (LOPA) and does not constitute an authorization for the installation
of seats in excess of 220. A separate approval is needed for the installation of the
individual customized cabin layout and the necessary cabin adaptations up to 230
seats

Try flying a BA A319 with two lavs and a 29" seat pitch. Almost the same experience but in a shorter tube

It's like a cabin layout map, but more detailed. It includes location of safety equipment, flight attendant seats, etc. Think of a blueprint of the cabin.

Try a Spirit A320 with 28" pitch. A miserable experience I will not soon forget.

Though to be fair for both airlines these are short routes. As far as I know BA doesn't use the 319 on their longer European routes. That doesn't mean that airlines aren't going to push what they think of as reasonable in terms of length to be stuck there.

Guess my eyes are messed up. i thought i read WestJet .
Why endure the nightmare and congestion of LAX when BUR, LGB, ONT & SNA is so much easier to fly in and out of. Same with OAK & SJC when it comes to SFO.

Probably something like this at the rear of the cabin to make room for 2 extra rows of seats. Maybe just 1 lav at the rear and one lav at the front?

Let the nightmare begin....

Even if asians are by average shorter people, I think anything above 3.5 hours is going to be torture, but with super low fares, people are willing to bet their backs DVT and confort for a price.

Its a matter of time until they offer the jump seat for a price. (that one Id gladly pay!)

The only route I think they fly over 2 hours is to TPE and I doubt this is meant for that kind of flight. This is likely to fly on busier routes within Vietnam (like SGN-DAD, HAN-DAD, SGN-HAN).

Its time for airlines to offer some kind of knock out pills for these configurations.

So 30 passengers more but more or less the same overhead bin volume. People in Vietnam, in China as well, use the overhead bins intensively for luggage, food, souvenirs etc. Even now it's often a fight for the overhead bins, wonder how this will be in this configuration...

Perhaps they could get AI ground crew to offer training on enforcing cabin baggage allowances? It's one area where I've found AI to be unusually competent...

As far as I know BA doesn't use the 319 on their longer European routes.

BA uses an A319 on LGW-TFS, which has a 4.5 hour block time.    Though BA at LGW runs like an LCC, they sometimes use an A319 for LHR-IST with an almost 4 hour block time.

That's longer than anything I think VJ will fly this A321 on. VJ does fly HAN-ICN but with A320s. Their current A321s have mainly been flying between SGN/DAD/HAN.

So much negativity from clearly very privileged people here.

I for one welcome such innovations. These are the tools that are bringing flying to the masses in the developing world. You can whinge all you want, but I'm sure hose who will be able to fly for the first time will appreciate these low fares.

All this talk of hell and nightmare, where in reality this is just a very safe and serviceable mode of travel. If you want to see actual hell, there is an episode of Top Gear where they go to Vietnam and drive on their country roads. Go and watch that and see what the alternative to these low cost airlines is.

While many Europeans and Americans would find 28" pitch very uncomfortable, for the vast majority of VietJet's customers, it really isn't going to be an issue.

Hell is watching Jeremy Clarkson offending people wherever he goes. Evil man.

This is low cost travel and people have a choice of airline... I avoid LCCs with a passion, even if it leaves me out of pocket. But I understand those who have no other choice, and if this means more people can get out and see the world then so be it

The 240 seat A321neo Lopa is all 28", so there is hope that at least some seats have more. And 29" is much better (not good, but 28" in so horrible that any improvement is drastic).

30 more? There are a few airlines operating with 28" pitch. VietJet is hardly the first. Spirit has been operating A321's with 218 seats for years (28" pitch), and their front row only has 4 seats so for all intents and purposes they have the density of 220 seats.

You have more space and more comfort on a 230 seat A320/ 186 seat B738 than on a 10 abreast 77W, so let us name the real torture: Swiss Air France Emirates to name a few.
