UA Denver 787 Ops

Tue Jul 28, 2015 3:21 am

Hello. I was talking with an employee who works at DEN about future UA potential routes with the 787. A few of the *rumors* we discussed was DEN becoming a 787 crew base and possible routes into Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai, and Hong Kong from DEN. I have to honest that some of the ideas didn't sound that far-fetched.

What do you think? Is UA prepared to move some substantial 787 ops to DEN and expand flying into those far east cities? And if so, where would they find the space for the additional aircraft on B Concourse?

Just wondering.

That is a big possibility, although I think UA thinks that SFO is enough for the PVG,ICN,HKG markets, other than ORD. But it is looking like IAH will see substantal 787 ops first, SCL,NRT,GIG,LHR, AMS will get the 789, MUC could get it soon. I am sure DEN will get to see more 787 routes, DEN-LHR/FRA should be candidates though.

Will DEN see more 787 ops?...yes

Is it far-fetched to think UA will start flights from DEN to places like Hong Kong anytime soon?...YES

I just don't see DEN getting any more Asia routes for , long time. I agree with AVENSAB727 thinking that FRA or LHR are prime candidates. LHR more so because DEN as LH to FRA.

OT, but does ORD have any UA 787 action?
When wasn't America great?

No UA 787s since the ORD-IAH runs.

I doubt we will see any more Asia from DEN but why not LHR or CDG the 787 is probably the perfect plane for those routes too.

Given ORD-CDG goes less-than-daily in the winter and there is no IAH-CDG, I'd be pretty surprised to see DEN-CDG start any time soon.

UA doesn't give DEN much love for international flights. They would rather route you via SFO, ORD, EWR, IAH depending on the direction you are flying.

I could see some *A hub to hub flights, but NRT and FRA are already covered.

UA ignores DEN like anything. I am just glad there is one 787 flight to Asia. Hope they maintain it.

They could have a flight to transatlantic destination like MUC or ZRH. But it remains a far fetched dream.

UA flies EWR to PVG and HKG, not just ORD. Also, LAX-PVG.

That's also because UA has competition from 3 other airlines (AA, AF, & DL) on ORD-CDG. IAH-CDG is already operated by AF on a 77W so the demand there is probably covered. UA could potentially make DEN-CDG work on a 787 if there was no competition.

I think MUC could work with the 787. Would love to see them start up LHR again as well.

Then again IAD-CDG is one of AF's top money earners (highest yielding routes).

In this case, it's not that UA is doing something wrong. It's AF doing some expert marketing.

No, they currently have IAH-DEN and DEN-NRT.

Funny note, but all the CHS built 787s fly directly to DEN for some sort of maintenance / retrofit work. Not sure what it is.

Inductions into the Fleet. Lots of extra equipment and placards are put on the aircraft.

I can't see UA adding anymore DEN-Asia aside from *maybe* a second DEN-NRT or maybe DEN-ICN. Maybe.

What I could really see, however, is some sort of DEN-Europe on the 787. UA tried the 772 on DEN-LHR a few times but either couldn't make it work or prefers to use the LHR slot on another hub, seemingly. Of course, those were different times, and I could see a "right-sized aircraft" working on that route or perhaps an additional FRA/MUC/CDG.

I don't think so. In the near future IAH will see a substantial increase in 787 ops, this coming winter EWR will see an increase in international 763 ops. It won't be till 2016-2017 when UA's 77W's start arriving that UA may be able to move some more widebodies around. It is widely believe that UA will based all 10 77W's are EWR( although that could change between now and then) but if those aircraft are based there UA I could see UA maybe moving some of those freed up sCO 777's back to IAH when could in turn free up the 789's that will be based there starting later this year. But in the near term I don't see UA adding more Pacific flights or any Atlantic flights out of DEN we will just have to wait and see what happens in a few years.

With SFO, ORD, EWR, IAD and LAX all having at least 2 flights to Asia and IAH having a NRT flight if and/or when UA decides to expand and offer more nonstop flights to China and/or Asia I think it will come down to 2 UA hubs ( especially if we are talking about adding flights to PVG, PEK, HKG) and I think those 2 hubs are IAH and DEN I don't think UA would add flights to Asia from both hubs I think they would choose one.

A week ago, I saw one fly right over City Park low, low, low!. It was beautiful, holy smokes. The weather was perfect, probably around 3 or 4 PM. The airplane looked incredible against that blue sky. It did this slick left bank, maybe 25 degrees, as it was about past Ferril Lake. I guess it was the one that does the Asia flights, as another poster indicated?

What a fortunate experience that was, oh baby!

A bunch of other types have been flying that same pattern. I pray to the gods "may the pattern continue, oh please  ". I've seen a UPS A300 a couple times now. It's paradise. If only I had a good camera.

I saw LAX-DEN pop up using the 787-900, but I can't seem to remember what month it was. I guess that would be the Melbourne aircraft doing a turn during the daytime.

Thanks for the info!

It certainly looked long enough to be a 9. I looked at flightrafar24.com yesterday, and they were running the exact same pattern as the other day   .
