Great job to TK in a turbulent marketplace.

I guess Kotil was right late last year when the said the weaker Lira would also benefit TK.

As many airlines do, unused mileage is considered a future liability for accounting, and things like mileage sale/earnings deferred until they are redeemed and flown.

As comparison - LH has €1.77bil pending, while a US carrier like DL list $4.29bil outstanding mileage ticket liability.

On section 19, page 36 you can find this information.

Actually there are many interesting information like this in this financial report.

For example:

Purchased but not flown ticket responsibilities : 4.44 B TL (was 2.79 B TL end of 2014)

Cash money of TK : 2.65 B TL (was 1.47 B TL end of 2014) -> 1B TL profit is already in the bank

XQ turnover and loss for 1H 2015 : 1.2 B TL and -32 M TL

Turkish DoCo turnover and profit for 1H 2015 : 465 M TL and 45 M TL
The future is in the skies.

Thanks for that.
By the way, did anyone else see this?
Page 19 of this report, TK puts YVR and (HKT, Phuket and DPS,Bali ) on the "wishlist".
This is the first I've seen/heard this
YVR depends on the Canadians and we know how that goes. We could see SEA before YVR.
The other two very seasonal.

1am departure: where to take pax from?

Same feed as the main Far East bank, including Europe, Levant, and a whole motley assortment of other destinations. IMHO, a red-eye westbound transatlantic option would be fantastic.

Mid-evening departure from Europe/middle east, arriving North America in the early morning rested and ready for work. If markets like Europe-S.America, Europe-S.Africa, or Asia-N.America are any indication, people tend to prefer double overnights and airlines are keen to offer them (reportedly higher yields). The Istanbul-North America block times minus time difference might just be long enough to facilitate this. TK would be offering a novel product with this. Thoughts?

Something else that comes to mind, however, is that Turkish operates a lot of longhaul flights that take longer than 24 hours for a turn. For example, far east flights generally depart around 1am arriving back around 6am next day. North America: depart 1 pm, arrive back 5pm. These banks create gaps in widebody fleet utilization between (roughly) 6am and 1pm as well as 5pm and 1am. Turkish often fills these gaps by sending WB aircraft to big spokes. However, perhaps a better solution would be to ultimately build 4 main longhaul banks, with additional departures roughly at 7am and 6pm. This would allow for a 5-day, 4-RT longhaul aircraft rotation.

Perhaps the real question in terms of new North America flights right now is existing timing of key feeder flights. Any insight?

This actually suggests that TK profits from cheap fuel and non-core business financial stuff. Operative profit dropped to 50m USD. The article states that this is a result from cheap ticket prices. Maybe TK is growing too fast...

I'm wondering if the spanner in the works of all of this is the conflict in Syria which is now spilling over into Turkey. Turkey is now "officially" at war with the PKK and ISIS, with both threatening and attacking the country's police and army all over the country. If this continues to get worse this could have an effect on passenger numbers in the form of less inbound tourism at least.

As usual I had a terrible experience with TK call center:
I was asking for a very simple fare and fare type question:
-I was about to choose, booking a trip; JFK-IST-WAW on TK's website compared to Expedia.
They are both the same price; RT Y for $679.00 (only $20 more than JFK-IST)
TK gave me a choice to layover 24 hours in IST on the way back, Expedia can offer only 18 hours.
Expedia showed the fare type as "P" promotional (25% mileage accrual on M&S), TK didn't specify.
I called TK and tried to book this reservation and learn the fare type and price. That's what you do when you call an airline call center
-First call; 17 minutes long, tried both English and Turkish trying to communicate with this lady. Two things she couldn't do; she could not give me that 24 layover, she could not see any fare other than "P".
-Second call; 30 minutes long. This person was able to give me that 24 layover, give me the rates for "P", "M", "Q" and such. Great !!! I was giving my passport info and such and all of a sudden I got cut off without a reservation

I wasn't in the mood to make another phone call, so I ended up buying an "Esnek", Flexible, fare class ticket for $1057 from TK's website. Then it shows up as "E" fare and I will get 100% mileage and be able to change the dates for $135. No way of knowing what fare type you are buying beforehand.

Am I being too picky? Why is it so hard to get this info during purchase?
Then you hear people saying; "I flew TK and they only gave me 2000 miles for my flight". For $400 more they should be given a chance to buy a higher fare class. No ??

Flown to HKG. Got very lucky and was upgraded to Business on the outbound, first time experience with TK in C class on long haul & was very impressed. Food was great especially. Only issue is that the Wifi didn't work as it was a last minute upgrade so my seat number was't recognised, but never mind that.

There are rumors that TK will start flying to Misrata again at the beginning of September, does anyone have info on that?

Also one silly question, flying to London on the 18th of September, I wanted to take my flight a few days earlier thinking since that weekend is Bayram a prime time ( and with new extended school vacation demand would be high), TK would be glad to change my ticket to an earlier date without charge, nope, they asked for an extra 350 $ + 95 $ for tax ( bought the original ticket at 300$ ) for any flight on the15th,16th and 17th. So the silly question is, if i try to change a day before the flight or on the date of the flight would the price for change drop?

Things between Turkey-Libya are a bit frosty. They just cancelled their visa-free travel agreement so it will be harder to travel between them as attaining a visa is not that easy due lack of respective embassies/consulates.
Also Libya's internationally recogniszd government has said it would ban Turkish firms from being awarded contracts which likely will weaken the historic strong trade ties between the nations.

I hope they change their minds about cancelling visas, I was hoping things would get better this fall but it is getting worse and worse since July '14, I guess TK lost a lot of money as well they had to cancel Tripoli, Misrata, Benghazi and I think it was either newly started Tobruq or Sabrah

I would try it many times, even now.
Last month I change the date on my IST-JFK Y ticket. In the past they always charge $200 or similar. On this day it was only 40TL. I changed it immediately. All it take is a person on the other side of the line with a different interpretation of fare rules

You learn something new everyday.
I was lucky enough to visit JFK Runway 22 re-pavement site yesterday. It is an incredible scale of a job to see.
They've built 2 mobile concrete plants on premises (Cargo areas), producing 2 large truck loads of concrete every minute. All that concrete is then hauled towards the Runway 22. The pavement machines lay that concrete around 8 meters wide at a time, 45cm thick. (18"). Then they drill through 2" wide solid steel bard every foot or so for reinforcement.
Those giant machines move at a painfully slow pace during the night. I was told the whole project to remove the old runway and put in a new one would cost $280M and take about a year, due to be completed late next month.
And it was super fun to take great pics all day long, including a selfie with the TK 77W  http://www.panynj.gov/airports/jfk-reconstruction.html

So cool;
5:27pm IST time landings cue today;
TK12 from JFK, followed by TK10 from LAX, followed by TK6 from ORD, back to back....cool

More strange, looking at SAW, 4 planes landing back to back are all from TK also;
From AMS, Trabzon, London and Hatay. All TK flight landing at SAW.

Also take a look at this article from Australian Business Traveller interviewing Temil Kotil:
